Dorkmaster - NONONO. They do not ask for "your name" or the file name. That was disinformation. It is not needed.

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW FOR THESE AXONS IS "MELISSA"

Thanks dorkmaster. My axon is the next one on the shock_sticks list (time wise) so I will be opening that file up tomorrow, provided I find the phone.

Wish me luck.

Thanks aliendial. Just her name and not the file name? Got it.

I heard that if you miss the questions the Operator asks you, you can say repeat immediately afterwards and the message will replay. Is that true and how exactly do you do this?

I haven't been at an Axon when the phone rang, but my understanding is that it only asks you about repeating at the end of the Audio clip. And it's in the form of "Should I repeat that or continue?" (Not an exact quote). If you say repeat it plays the clip again if you say continue it errors out and hangs up. I'm not sure if that is the case with the most recent Axons though... can anyone say definitively if that is still the case.?

Edit: Curse my slow fingers and need to double check for gram. errors...

It's not the most reliable thing in the world, but it's a start, so please check http://payphone-directory.org before you go out tomorrow, and see if a payphone that accepts incoming calls is already in existence there... start there, test it when you get there (bring a cell phone if you can) and do your best... that's all anyone can ask of you! If it doesn't work, try again when you next can. People may get uppity about stuff and try to act all "superior" when talking about how someone screwed up an axon or something, but remember it's a game, and you're just playing as well as you can, and if you heat the axon, rock on!!! Cool

but just remember to take notes right afterwards, so you can document all the details you can remember, whether you activate or not. That way you can either relay the conversation so we know what happens at that point, or you can narrow your phone choices, if it doesn't work!

Best of luck, again, and hopefully we'll hear a happy report from you tomorrow!

Whoops! Sorry about that... so please scratch that.. (I'll edit in a sec...) I'm still gonna leave the bit about Operator though...

If it says what's my REAL name, say Melissa.

If it says what's my nickname, say Operator.

I can't say for certain it won't ask that... but apparently you will NOT have to answer with anything other than Melissa (or potentially Operator)... But aliendial's activated more axons that you can shake a stick at... (and that's a lot! Seriously, I could shake a stick at a LOT of things and- uh... sorry.. tangent. Razz ) Anyway, best of luck and ignore dorks like myself, I guess! Wink

small edit - AD

Team Boise (weephun/Shontu) Hivekuts axons report.

Correct coordinates found: 3/3
Phone call received at axons: 3/3
Correct response given ("Melissa"): 3/3
Response recognized as correct: 1/3 Embarassed

We answered the phone call for both the 12:17 (visa) and the 14:11 (miracles) and gave the correct response, but neither was recognized. We'll follow suggestions to A - wait for 1/2 second before starting to say Melissa and B - repeating it slowly multiple times tomorrow and see if we have better luck. So apparently there is no "human" error check going on, just hit-and-miss voice recognition. Oh well, nothing's perfect, huh?

Boise Locations (not that I think anybody but me and Shontu are looking in Boise, but just in case):
9:29 (code_nothing), Kopper Kitchen 2661 Airport Way, payphone in front entrance lobby.
12:17 (visa), Pizza Hut 818 Ann Morrison Park Dr, payphone inside the store.
14:11 (miracles), Doubletree Hotel 2900 Chinden Blvd, bank of 3 payphones to the right of the front desk by the sales office. Phone on the left.

Anyhow, the remaining St. Louis Axon is at Meramec Community College. Is anyone here part of the group that fired this one last time? Which phone is it?

Would folks like to meet there tomorrow about about 11:20 Central, do the Axon thing and then go out for lunch somewhere? There's a pretty good Chinese place at the NW corner of Big Bend and Lindbergh.

I was going to try and make it there by the time it rings, but it would be close, and I wouldn't have time for lunch. If you're planning on going, I'll probably stay at work so I don't get in trouble. Smile

As for the phone at Meramec, I think it was mediajunkie who got it the first time, but I'm not sure. I can't find a post with location details. If you need help (i.e. covering multiple candidate phones), let me know.

15:55PDT asset Axon report

I did a quick hunt for payphones for about 50 minutes before the specified time, and found absolutely none, so decided to try the two ringing phones according to the payphone directory, which I considered within a tolerable range for error... about 200 yards. These two phones were in the ER lobby of Kishwaukee Community Hospital, and neither of them rang at 15:55. I waited 10 minutes to be sure and boogied, since I was getting some pretty weird looks from the staff. If anyone else is in the Dekalb area and wants to scour the area for phones, feel free: I did a precursory drive-around scouting, but nothing in-depth. If there are phones in the area, they must be inside buildings.
Nice to see asset unlocked, so this isn't an urgent axon any more, but I'd sure still like to get it hot.

I w

I wish there was more notice this was happening, I could have adjusted my sleep schedule and gotten some phones today. Looks like everyone else needed to adjust their schedules too though. I'll probably be seeing all of you cats on the Berkeley extreme team tomorrow!

raining_cops axon in Lincoln, Nebraska

Well, I could have gotten the raining_cops wav file activated if it hadn't been for a couple of grouchy women. The coordinates for the Lincoln, Nebraska axon (finally! one in my city!) took me to a parking lot outside a university building. Thankfully I went over on my lunch break to check things out before the 5:31 p.m. (CST) call.

I noted the address on the building and entered it at www.geocode.com and wala! It returned the axon coordinates to a tee! So I was 100% confident I would find a pay phone inside that building.

So, I returned at about 4:45 p.m. to give myself time to find the phone and test it, etc. When I entered the building I was immediately greeted by a big receptionist desk. I asked if they had a pay phone and was directed to a lower level break room where, sure enough, I found a pay phone on the wall. Bingo!

Since the lady escorted me to the break room I felt the need to explain why I was looking for the phone. When I told her it would ring at 5:31, she informed me the building doors were locked at 5:15 so I would not be able to get in. Sensing she would not let this stranger just hang out in their break room I returned to my car. On my way out I noted there was a stairwell right inside the front doors that led to the lower level just out of sight of the receptionist's desk.

I concocted a plan to wait about 10 minutes and slip back into the building at about 5:10 and sneak downstairs and hang out in the bathroom until 5:30. It was obvious there would still be people in the building into the evening, so I knew I wouldn't be tripping any alarms or anything like that.

Well, the plan I thought was flawless, as long as I could get to the bathroom undetected. However, when I opened the first set of tinted doors and was moving toward the stair well I spotted her. The same lady that had shown me the phone was standing right on the other side of the inside glass doors looking right at me. And now she had a friend. Deciding my best bet now was to simply ask permission, I opened the next set of doors.

The younger girl who had helped me find the payphone asked me again about the "game" and I tried my best to briefly explain the phone calls. Then the "older" lady spoke up. "This is a place of business," she snapped, "and we can't be involved in playing games. So we're going to have to ask you to leave." Dejected, I politely said okay and left.

So, I don't know if this axon will ever be able to go hot. Bummer. The one axon I finally get in my city and it's in a building guarded by grumpy women. AaaaggggghhhH!

I haven't given up yet, though...

i_hate_you 16:15 Redmond, WA is hot.
It is the exact same location as round 1. I was the only one there to answer the phone. It asked for real name (Melissa) which was accepted relatively quickly.

axon hot

15:27 raining_cops is hot, i was there, this thing makes you go through hell finding phones...it was in a goddamn mall, good thing most of the phones didnt accept incoming calls...and continue gives you the old....your hardware doesnt let me continue or whatever the heck message it was. oh yeah, odd coincidences (they really are just coincidences so don't look into what i say) was that the phone was in the city of troy, mi. troy, ahahaha, yep, and in the sound clip they mention the city of berkley which is actually where the next axon in michigan was...not too far away from where we were. just....odd....ahahaha. bad turn out, only 6 of us total from what i saw. good job michiganders....i expect a lot of axons to go hot over labor day weekend.

edit: i take that back, michigan needs a lot of work still. 2 out of 6 axons were hot, my buddies that were with me at the 15:27 raining_cops missed the 16:33 real...ah well, better luck tomorrow huh.

For the New York City crew:

Tomorrow I'll be covering both panic_button at 8:01 PDT and code_word at 12:57 PDT. They are at 116th and broadway and 110th and broadway, respectively. Since one of these is 4 blocks away from me and the other is 2 blocks away, this shouldn't be too hard, although the complication of multiple phones is obviously always possible, so any help in covering the area would be greatly appreciated. Overall, however, you shouldn't feel a desperate need to get to either of these points, since I'll get both, even if they take me a day or two to narrow down.

With regards,

Ian Whalen
