[EMAIL] To Reed re: copying/scanning Dead Poems

Just sent this off to Reed:
Quote:
Hello Mr. Singleton,

First of all let me thank you for the effort you have put into your
website and the new book. I received my copy today and I can see that
there is much here to digest. I am looking forward to reading it and
perhaps it will help me to understand Ann Starling and those who spoke
through her better.

I must pose to you somewhat of a delicate request. Certain associates
of mine and I have been investigating strange occurrences that took
place at Cambridge Mental Hospital, and so I'm sure you'll understand
that Ann Starling and her gifts have been of great interest to us. We
believe, as you do, that there are hidden truths to be discovered in
these poems and drawings. Unfortunately, not all of my associates
have ready access to copies of the book, for various reasons. (We are
a not-for-profit group and not well-funded.)

How would you feel about me taking selected passages from the book and
making them available to my associates in electronic format (ie,
probably by scanning and reproducing them as an image file)? I see
that your book contains the standard copyright language indicating
that this can only be done with consent of the author, and as a writer
myself, I wouldn't have it any other way. It would be very helpful
though if you would allow us permission to judiciously reproduce
selections from the material and store them in an online forum
(publically accessible but in truth frequented only by my associates
and myself). The benefit to you, of course, is that it makes it
easier for many of us to consider Ann's words, and if there are truths
to be revealed, we can do so that much more quickly (and of course
share whatever we learn with you.)

Please let me know what your thoughts are, Mr. Singleton. I will
abide by your decision, whatever it may be. And again thank you for
sharing these glimpses into Ann's life with all of us.

Sincerely,
Harold (Heri) Chon

I will post his reply when I receive it.

While that is brilliant, maybe the PM's want to use this book to finance the game, or pay those uniformed phone-answerers at TT Razz

I actually like this idea. not everyone can afford the book, and if it is an ingame thing, then it's hardly fair to say "pay huge amounts of shipping costs" some people live in other countries... it's just an odd situation. while there is a definite puzzle in the book, there is no proof yet that is it in-game. and also, the argument that reed is not real, ann is not real, and these are not really poems by dead people so it's ok was brought up, i would like to point out the words "PEN" and "NAME".... i think it's great that you sent the letter. if it's not allowed, we won't scan/post the book, if it is allowed, a lot of people will still buy the book for memento sake. personally, i will be getting my book in the mail very soon, and will be VERY happy to own a copy. but i'm unemployed, and had to borrow the money to get this memento of the game....

ALSO...

I want to make a suggestion. For those of you who have been complaining about not being able to get the book due to living too far away: someone email Reed about the e-book option on lulu. Maybe mention how the shipping and handling is too large, and how he doesn't make any money on the S&H anyway. He could price the e-book somewhere between the b&w copy and the color copy... There would be more sales, everyone wins in the end.

This may be posted elsewhere, but I couldn't find mention of it. The pop-up page at deadpoems now says "Download Dead Poems! E-Book version coming soon!"

I noticed that too... Reed never responded to me (c'mon, PMs, I was trying to back you up here) but I guess this is sort of an answer. If they are going to sell electronic versions of the book, it would probably be bad form for us to be making our own electronic versions, in whole or in part.

I wish I had known, because to be quite honest, I would rather have an electronic version myself. It's cool to have the book, yes, but given the choice to support the PMs by spending $10 on an electronic copy that I can actually get more use out of, and spending $30 to get a hard copy... eh. It almost seems sort of calculating - "OK, if we sell the e-book first, no one will buy hard copies, so we'll wait a week or two so the hardcore freaks buy hard copies and *then* we'll offer the e-book..."

Meh. Maybe I am just having a bad day. I am enjoying the game, yes, and I don't mind spending the money to support the PMs, but... meh.

Note to Reed aka PMs - might be a nice gesture at some point to make the e-book version available free to those who already have purchased a hard copy. (Though I acknowledge that Lulu is probably not set up to do such things.) On the other hand... Reed, you've got my email. Smile

My guess is that they were waiting to hear that buyers of the HC version had recieved theirs before they released the e-book. That way, everybody would be on a level playing field, and recieve the info at nearly the same time. I think we'll be seeing the e-book any moment now.

Mr. Chon -

In the spirit of "fair use", and hopefully to interest several new
readers, you have my permission to share selected, individual pages
with people.

I do request, however, that you respect my business interest, and do
not distribute copies (electronic or otherwise) of the entire book or
major portions thereof with anyone.

If anyone you know is interested in a copy for themselves, please
direct them to the DeadPoems website - I will even have an e-copy for
sale soon.

Thank you for your purchase!

Dead Poems. Read it - you will believe!

I think that's clear enough, especially in light of the e-book on the way...
