TY dreamerblue. Am also in awe of your connex-map. Re Vanessa butterflies: there is a 4th species called The American Lady.
Also, J.P. replied to my email asking for his AIM addy and my curiousity about his hidden cipher's meaning or threat.

J.P. Weiller wrote:

Good morning.

I was chatting to Vlad and Mr. Intelligent went ahead and lost the chat history AGAIN.

I asked him about the NGBHIETNTSANSHTEUHSEADHNGTEIS message and he gave me the clues and practically gave me the answer and unfortunately I'm a bit slow and didn't get it till he went offline and I couldn't show off my smartness to him. In fact he got really frustrated with me because he "Handed it to me on a silver platter." (He quoted Mark 6:28 ) After some careful thought (and a coffee) it struck me.

He told me that it was easy to write [and left and right again] or something to that affect then told me about the Australian band Pendulum. Well as I said he got really annoyed and told me he was sicking of explaining everything and that I should imagine then it hit me. So I'll give you the answer but not the method, you can figure that out yourself. It says "The sun has set and the night begins."

THX Jim, did have an anagram with "sunset" and "night" but left it alone for the holiday rush. Laughing Vlad's "Pendulum" method means starting in the middle and forming the words from left to right outwards. Kewl.

ETA: searched Tribal Pages for a Louis Weiller with no joy. A stretch next? W. Weiller (aka Wyler) was the film director of The Collector, a scenario about an obsessive city hall clerk who collects butterflies.

Vlad's wall message at 6:04 EST
"It has moved from the first to the seconds, yet the players are still at 0."

Message hidden in ALL my emails from J.P.W.
"MOVING THE SECONDS FOR NATIONAL DEFENCE"

http://i45.tinypic.com/1zecq2v.jpg
^^ A side by side shot of the recent email, and the same shot, but with everything highlighted

I assume that means the 'Argonauts' as Vlad referred to JPW and Department 18 as, have already made their first - and possibly second - moves. We still have stuff to figure out.

Also, supposedly other 'pieces' got more bits. In the Kings and Bishops album, there is a picture of a picture (taken from Ebay, I think, due to the watermark.) that says I <3 Celia. If you didn't read the messages between Vlad and I above, Celia is another name for the Patron Saint of Music. With the Beethoven references, I think there may be a connection.

Also, good work on the anagram thing Very Happy

"Moving the seconds"...I decided to Google "seconds chess" to try and figure out a connection besides just "being the second to move" and discovered that http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=1912 says, "The seconds are chess coaches with whom the players have been working to prepare for the match." Interesting...I never thought of chess masters as having coaches before. I suppose I always assumed they were just very gifted people who are just able to "see" stuff and/or have advanced analytical skills.

Some new stuff up on Vladimir's profile today:

First, he apologizes for doing so, but the PM has to break the 4th wall temporarily for legal reasons, asking that any player who is under the age of 16 notify him via private message. He promises to remove the OOG post in 1 week. So...if you're under 16, send Vlad a message.

Second, to compensate for breaking the 4th wall, he posts a riddle: a photo of a man, commented on 4 times by himself, with the caption:
Quote:
U O A O O I O U
O N O O O O M E T O O
U O A O I D O S O
I O N O O I O U T O O

I'll spoiler who the comments point to, but once you figure out one, you've pretty much figured out them all...but I have yet to figure out the caption, and am going to leave it alone until I've done more wiki-ing.

Comment 1:
Quote:
The defining scientist, a great role model to us all.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The man in the picture is William Whewell; according to Wikipedia, he was the one who came up with the word "scientist." I am not sure why Vladimir thinks Whewall is a great role model, though.

Comment 2:
Quote:
"Any two bodies of equal size and figure but of different materials will have their natural velocities in the same proportion as their weights where by their natural velocities he means the velocities with which they naturally fall downwards "

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
This is from Whewall's work "On the philosophy of discovery: chapters historical and critical."

Comment 3:
Quote:
"The Consilience of Inductions takes place when an Induction, obtained from one class of facts, coincides with an Induction obtained from another different class. Thus Consilience is a test of the truth of the Theory in which it occurs."

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
This quote from Whewall is found right in the Wikipedia article about consilience, and is a quote from his "The Philosophy of the Inductive Sciences." The idea behind consilience is that discoveries made in one area of knowledge help further knowledge in other areas, because all knowledge is connected. My high school physics teacher used to joke that chemistry is really just physics, for example. In turn, molecular biology is really just chemistry. The Wikipedia article on consilience points out that psychology is then basically an application of biology, and social sciences are applications of psychology.

Interestingly, Whewall also wrote award-winning poetry and also had an interest in architecture, so his interests were not limited to only one area of knowledge, either.

Comment 4:
Quote:
As I tried to tell you, but as he puts much, much better...

I think this is basically a nudge not to ignore anything, even things seemingly unrelated...the butterflies and the chess and the Alice in Wonderland references and and and...making progress in figuring out one thing will help us figure out things in other areas.

Crescent: Yes, I am the person you added; I see you on my friends list there now. I will add you to the collaborators list soon; just want to get some more stuff out of my brain first & finish milking the remaining pages I have to document from this forum thread for all the connections you guys are spotting (fantastic job, by the way, guys). I am wondering, though, if there might be a better online service to use, as this one is pretty much set up for hierarchical mind maps & doesn't like so much that I want to make connections between different branches, have free-floating areas on the sides unconnected as of yet to the rest, etc. I've been able to work around these issues for now, but would like some more flexibility.

I'm a teacher, too...I teach high school math and science. I have to admit I don't use mind maps much in my own practice, though I have developed flowcharts now and then to help students see what questions they can ask themselves to decide how to solve a given problem (after seeing a colleague's example helping students decide when to use the sine law, the cosine law, or one of the three basic trig ratios).

That's a great idea. Something like that would have made Pre-Cal so much easier... haha. Anyway, I'm working on getting teaching certification for secondary sciences. If I do end up teaching, I think H.S. Chemistry would be my first pick.

Back on topic: Thanks for your hard work on the wiki, and the mind map, dreamerblue! That'll certainly come in handy.

Out of curiosity, has anybody heard from Vanessa or Claire recently? I requested to add them as friends, and I'm not sure if the request expired, or if they denied me, or if something else happened. In any case, the message telling me that I was awaiting their confirmation has been replaced with the "Add as Friend" button. I can't see any of their activity, and I thought that they were supposed to be back after Christmas. Since Vlad is active, I would assume that Vanessa and Claire would be too.

@dreamerblue: your chess master "seconds" find is super interesting

Believe this may be a unique inductive reasoning puzzle following Whewell's three steps of induction

Then, our goal is to create a 5th line by making conclusions based on all the observable patterns (inc. math). Basic Examples

If I remember correctly, Vanessa indicated that she wouldn't be back until after the New Year. Claire has gotten her computer working again and is working on scanning the documents. She says she's been in contact with Vanessa.

I just noticed that she posted on 12/24 (bolding mine):
Quote:

Post arrived, lots to do as I've got loads of wrapping. Of course, the one day I'm needing the computer [scanning V's stuff, facebook updates and email checking] I'm unable to until now - brother had downloaded a virus. Having to sort EVERYTHING out to ensure the 'Weiller worm' is removed from everything. Mery Christma...s everyone, I'm upto my neck in virus stuff - joy to the world?

Not sure how I missed it, but then again, my FB was bombarded with Merry Christmas status updates for 2 days straight, lol. Looks like Jean Pierre has gotten to Claire, too.

Just posting this real real fast before I go to bed, but I talked to Vlad (which I am always terrible at this time of the morning) and he asked me this:

Quote:
Have any in your piece-movement group realised the 'potential' of what lied hidden in Timon yet?

We had been talking about Timon of Athens, as I'm auditioning for that today. So, stuff hidden in the Timon picture maybe?

Possibly steged or is there some metaphor we're missing?

As he specifically mentioned "your piece-movement group" and you are a rook, I'd say look to see if there is anything new in the photo album for the rooks or if any special Facebook messages or e-mails were sent to only you and the other rooks.

Edit: by the way, although I was recently added as a rook to Jim's board, I haven't yet been granted access to the rooks' album.

Timon

was he talking about the play or the picture though Sirannon? He seemed more focussed on the play when he sent all those snippets from a scene from it earlier?

Good morning.

J.P. Weiller.

ETA: searched at Tribal Pages for a Louis Weiller with no success.

There is a Jean-Pierre Weiller in the Javal family tree at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Javal_family who has a grandfather Louis Émile Javal...but that Jean-Pierre Weiller was born in 1890 and therefore it seems unlikely that he is the one we've been talking to.

Another possibility: There is a Paul-Louis Weiller (1893-1993) in that branch of the family. Although Wikipedia lacks an article on him, he apparently had some fame in his own right: see his obituary here, and a book written about him here. According to the obituary, he had one son (and a daughter, but the son is more of interest to us if we want the Weiller last name to persist through marriages). While I don't see any information anywhere online about Paul-Louis Weiller's descendants, it would be reasonable to think that his son could in turn have had a son and named him Jean-Pierre Weiller in honour of the boy's granduncle.

I was wondering about a reference that Vladimir made in his conversation with Telos a couple days ago:

Quote:
6:24pmVladimir

Most of the pieces got pictures with one piece getting words instead.

Who is we there?
6:26pmVladimir

D-503 and his friends?

What does he mean by D-503?

I've sent Claire my address in case she does decide to post stuff internationally (her Facebook status is complaining about how long it will take to do so, but she also says it might be good to get the papers further away from John), but theclaw may be a better candidate as she is in the UK, after all.

Looks like a few of us got a message from Vlad:

Happy New Year. Midnight I will be at rest. I bid thee well and thank thee for 2009s company. 2010 will bring the memory to speak once more.
