Puzzle from the World's Largest Scavenger Hunt:

Hey guys.

I was directed here from Reddit. They were very enthusiastic about what you guys do, so I'm hoping you can help.

I belong to one of the teams participating in the World's Largest Scavenger Hunt at the University of Chicago. You can read the entire list at scavhunt.uchicago.edu

There's lots of clues and fun items (I just completed #54: bonsai yggdrasil) but one that we wanted some more help on.

It's the following item:

#136: 648 5530

136 is the item number and there's no other context besides the string of numbers (though maybe it's placement on the list is crucial)

In the past, there have been clues that are, say, strings to flickr accounts, that was the beginning to a whole other set of puzzles. but we haven't been able to crack this one. We're not even sure where to start.

Maybe it's a phone number, but none of the area codes that would attach to this number have revealed any good leads. (specifically, nothing in the Chicago area, nor anything revealed from other cursory Google Searches)

Any ideas?

A couple of months late, but....

Since it's a scavenger-hunt and they want you to hand over items, perhaps it isn't a code at all... How about writing down the number on a piece of paper (or make it more beautiful and/or special for extra points) and hand it over? Wink

Or ask Sue Fitzpatrick, Professional Collector (whos phone numer is 648-5530) Laughing

Hah, I'm a Judge Emeritus (and one of the people who came up with the Flickr item). I can't say what the item was for sure, but I'd guess it was a road trip item - something they saw on a sign or something. Not that it matters at this point Wink

Or, maybe it's the phone keypad code....and arrange the letters.

We shall never know.
