So, we're not really getting communication from Kevin anymore? Someone else is posting videos on his youtube account and someone else is changing his twitter image, without his knowledge?

New image in drop.io; a picture named 'again' of some binary code. I'm going to translate it and see if amounts to anything now.

Quite obvious eh? Thing is, where is it?-)

Darn, I'd just finished xD Is the binary image itself stegged? That's the only idea I've got.

Image analysis

I converted binaries to black and white squares, the code is too non-random to be just noise. Next up is full binary analysis as it seems that it could be ascii to some extent in there. However looking at the edge it seems that the numbers continue outside the canvas meaning that this could be from just from some stock image.

This is the binary code extracted. Note that if you look the right edge of image there are few hidden numbers visible for some reason:

Code:

Treating this data initially as ascii didn't give any answers. If this would be 8bit or 24bit color data, there would not be enough data to create pictures. I tested that and results were really really tiny.

Any ideas what could we try next to this data?

Here is my binary conversion:

The latest drop.in ,go.png, when reworked has a hidden msg. Reckon it's referring to the first image "page.jpg." Reading 2x:
Believe there may be a hint in each line being repeated twice. (click attachment for clearer text)

Waitwaitwaitwait. Brainwave. Well, kinda. I thought at first it might be a haiku, but the number of syllables - 5561 - might still be important; the way it's written is very odd. A Case of Identity was published in the Strand Magazine in 1891. Does the other image have a numeric significance that might lead to the password to the mashimoto homepage?

Otherwise, I think the point of the passage *might* be that Kevin is fabricating 'drop in only kind places' etc. He is the only one communicating with us, just as Mr Angel and the Stepfather were the same man.

an idea.

what if we have to make an overlay of the black and white image and put it over the passage from the book, and read the letters that show up through the white patches?

specifically, those along the lines with the hidden numbers..

just an idea. glad this is finally going somewhere.

drat

not at that resolution I cannot. I was kinda wishful thinking / hoping that they would line up perfectly and reveal certain letters which could be used as a password.. sorry to get anyone's hopes up, but i am definitely on the case and seeing what else comes to mind.

good hunting, all.

Note that only the first image is JPEG file.

All the other files have been pointing to that file all the time with stronger and stronger hints. First mask, then STEG, then blatant hint to look at first image.

I'm now working through different steganography softwares to find if there is something in there.

At least Stegdetect doesn't find anything in there. It could be steghide. But what would be the password?

*Edit (I don't want to make this too easy for others, so removed spoilers)*
It is steghide and answer really is in the passage Smile

Don't wish to install Steghide on my comp. Please post the answer you found between "spoilers" on the thread. Thanks.

Hmmm, this seems to have completely stalled on the interesting / intriguing story front and has morphed into a cryptography treasure hunt guessing game, which is not my cup o' tea.

I'm totally lost with all this, but at least I learned what Steganography is before jumping ship!

Seconded. It's really frustrating that you've solved it but I can't see it D:
