Hello there.
Tentative Hello!

Well, where to start?

Obviously I am new here, and the best way to start moving and becoming a part of a community or any kind of gathering, is to say Hello, and introduce yourself. After all can't well expect any community to turn to you and say, "Hey, you're new, let us help you." If they know nothing about you.

So. Hello!

My chosen name, not my birth or given, is Malcolm Creigt. Like I said not my birth or given name, but it is a name I use, online and out in the world, especially when it comes to writing, and even recently when it comes to my photos. So in that way it is as much my real name as is my birth name.

Anywho, moving on.

As you are probably already beginning to notice, I can tend to ramble on. Especially so in the late, or early however you look at it, hours when I've not been to sleep in a while. Probably not the best time for introductions, but it is the point in time where I finally built up courage to step out of the shadows and into the light and say, "Hey! Here I am! Fresh meat! Descend upon me!" Yeah I can do dramatic too.

Okey moving on again.

I am a writer, as I believe I said or alluded to at least, though not published, yet. I am also a gamer. That said I don't play games for the competition, and while success is thrilling, to me the bigger success is taking one more step in a story, finding out one more little fact about a character, or a place, or an era, or a world. I am heavily story driven, and when it comes to multiplayer games, socially driven. Of course that is off set by the fact that online and in real life I tend to be very withdrawn with people I don't know, unless its late. But I open once I'm comfortable with people, or a community. Trust me. This will definitely be the most you see out of me for a loooong time.

Now I've always been interested in games that were played in person, first starting with D&D, which I played as often as possible until the only person willing to be DM decided to join the Marines suddenly, which while I admire him for the decision and making it through boot it did force me back into video games and digital media. LARPing interested me a little, but not enough people around where I live, while I had limited transportation, and besides it was one of those things I couldn't help but look at others doing it and giggle like mad.

What interests me about ARGs is, from everything I'm seeing here there are no stats, dice rolls, etc. Because more or less I'm me interacting and exploring and advancing, and I can not tell you how Interesting that sounds to me. Especially since I have my own car and gas money now, and can leave dela'where?' to go up or down or around to bigger cities with probably more going ons. So yeah, I'm way interested, and plan to pursue this as best as I can.

So what turned me towards ARGs? Why hadn't I heard of this before? etc. etc.

Well I dunno why I didn't find out about ARGs before...but trust me I feel like someone just slammed my head against my desk and forced open my eyes to this new world and the possibilities before me. And I have to admit that I feel a little giddy, and kinda like a child with a shiny new toy to poke at...

So how did I find out? Well a book led me here. Not to the site directly, no. But I did follow a trail from the book to here. The cover caught my attention with a pair of vibrant green eyes in a white field below a cityscape. I'll admit it, I'm enthralled when it comes to eyes especially beautiful or interesting eyes. The title of the book "This is not a Game." By Walter Jon Williams. It was upon page 13 that I first saw mention of an ARG, followed by a description, or maybe it was the other way around? Anyways it mentioned ARGs, and actually the book seems to follow a plot of intrigue around a Puppetmaster. Well it got me curious, it sounded interesting, exciting, and something I'd love to participate in! So my thoughts turned to, "Is this real? Did the author come up with this? Or Draw from a real community of people, a real thing, and write a book?" So off to google I went, and typed in ARG. It spit out a Wikipedia entry near the top so I clicked that. And from there I followed a link here.

And now I must say, before I pass out for the day, is that I'm glad curiosity got the better of me. And I can not wait to start poking around for an ARG to participate in.

and now....off to sleep, and to the dreams it may carry.

Welcome to Unfiction and (an) ARG community! ;)

I think your sentiments about what's drawing you to ARGs are greatly echoed by many in this community. Obviously, people are attracted to various aspects of the genre, but I'm with you about the story discovery aspect. Some love the puzzles, the gaming, some like it for the role-playing, some for other social effects like positive change, gaming for good causes, some just love the pure big-brand marketing, or the social interaction with other community members... or any and all of the above =)

What did you think of This Is Not A Game? Have you seen the movie The Game? (generally considered a great example of what an ARG can be or do)

Come, siddown, stay a while! =)
Check out the News & Rumors section for games that are starting or recently started, or just look for game forums with recent activity.
Glad to have ye here ;)

Good to find a community and to take some first steps into it.

I"m currently more or less in the middle of This is not a Game. It's actually pretty interesting and has me reading at a decent enough pace. Another 4 hours, whenever I can find them, and I should be able to finish up the second half of the book.

The Game, I must admit I've not heard of before now. And I'll have to look around about trying to get my hands on it. Might be harder, movie stores and movie rental stores seem to be closing up shop in town, which is kinda shame since that was really all that was left interesting in town, yeah this place is boring. Suncoast closed, Blockbuster closed, Movie Gallery been closed, all we have left for movies are FYE, and those Red Boxes, and of course the "Everything under the freakin' sun" stores like walmart and target.

Well if anything I'll nab a copy off of Amazon or something.
