Seeking a little help

Well, not really the right forum, probably the Timewaster forum or something would've been better suited, but nevertheless.

I'm guessing you're supposed to figure out what numbers they represent then? There doesn't seem to be enough info in the three rules though, unless I'm missing something, to determine in what way you're supposed to reach the number; for example, does it work like the value above the line is the first digit of the number, and below the line the second digit, or do the values just add together to reach the number? Not to mention that, with either of those approaches, there are multiple possible answers... will keep staring at it and see if something comes to me.

supposedly all the information is there. apparently i'm looking for a 6 digit number. i assume the first line represents the first 2 digits; the middle line, the next two; and the bottom line, the last 2.

I've tried both: 343241 and 241111, forwards and backwards. the clue i'm having a hard time grasping is that the upper numbers have a larger unit value than the lowers.

The way I understand it is that it means all numbers above the line must be higher than those below, e.g. if one of the numbers above the line was 4, no numbers below the line could be 5.

Unit value is an odd term to use, though, I've not heard it use in mathematics before, its a marketing term used to describe the value of each individual unit of whatever you're selling. I just took it as bad wording though and ignored the "unit" bit and figured it just meant higher value.

Alternatively, what if notches above the line are, say, 2, and those below are 1? So the first one (3 above x 2 = 6, 4 below x 1 = 4) could be 64?

Yes, that would work too. Thats why we say we need more info than those two rules, or else there are a ton of different possible answers.

I assumed "unit" referred somehow to the numbers... like when you're learning to count and you learn about hundreds, tens and units. The single digits on the right being the units column.

Not that knowing that helps any.

That's probably what it means then, yes, still odd wording but atleast that makes some sense. Still way too many possibilities to solve this though, which is irritating.

Hello all.
Love the forum. Been lurking for a while, but decided to chime in. Here's my take on this one:

If each notch is to have a value of between 1 and 5, then we must be meant to get those values by their position. Since they all seem to be offset from each other by at least one intervening whitespace, I get:

2+4+5 = 11
-------
1+3+4+5 = 13

1+2+3 = 6
-----
2+3 = 5

1+2+3+4 = 10
-------
1 = 1


The "greater unit value" comment made me think of a numbering system, where each successive position to the left has a greater "unit value", like: 100, 10, 1, etc. Taking this into account, and guessing that we are talking about base 6 (0, plus 1 thru 5) we have:

2+4+5 = 11 11*6 + 13 = 79
-------
1+3+4+5 = 13

1+2+3 = 6 6*6 + 5 = 41
-----
2+3 = 5

1+2+3+4 = 10 10*6+1 = 61
-------
1 = 1

Kind of an odd take on a numbering system, but then again, this is a puzzle and not a straight math problem. To go further, each picture line looks like a key...ascii?...

61 = =

Put them together and you have:

O)=

Does this mean he's sticking his tongue out at you? Why wouldn't it be =. That would be 59 instead of 79. I'm guessing that, since he is restricting himself to adding multiples of 6, this kind of limits which ascii characters he could choose.

I'm guessing your uncle wanted you to go a little further than just getting the numbers; a bit multi-layered.
