[META] "Let Op" a letdown

Honestly, not to insult the nice ... Danish (or whatever language that is) person who came up with "Let Op!" to complete the HALO acronym, but...

"Let Op" sucks.

With the great power of being a very early beekeeper and helping to name the experience, comes the great responsibility of naming the experience something compelling and comprehensible -- not goofy and unintelligible.

In my opinion, the remarkable serendepity of the initial "HA" was utterly ruined by the contrivance of resorting to a whole different language in order to arrive at the "LO" to complete the acronym.

As I recall, "let op" means "pay attention." Well, I can think of another phrase that means "pay attention":

LOOK OUT!

I didn't even know that it was supposed to spell HALO, but I see that now. Why does "Let Op" mean pay attention?

I like the Let Op! target. Look Out! doesn't have the same ring, it just sounds cheesy. Still, as mentioned previously, when I went to the Netherlands recently I was thinking about bees every time I saw a Warning sign, which was frequently Smile

Says you. I say "let op" is cheesier. I say the "ring" you describe "Let Op" as having is in fact a ring of solid cheese. I say, at least "look out" makes sense and doesn't sound completely awkward and shoehorned into place. Most of all, I say submit it to a poll.

Is it really that important?
[Jersey] Jeezus! [/Jersey]
I mean, it's been that way for a long time now. I think you'll find it's stuck. At least you know what it means. And personally I think that having a second language in there only adds to the mystery - which is a good thing. It embodies the purpose of the ARGer:
"Look out for hidden things."
Let Op! isn't exactly an obvious choice for that very reason. It adds to the whole experience of the Game.

Besides, the Admins name the forums here. And they let you all name yourselves the utterly boring beekeepers, so I think you can cut them some slack. Very Happy

Hey, I'm neither Danish nor Dutch. Not very good at naming things when I have no idea where they're going either. Just ask vpisteve; I had to ask him what to call the Urban Hunt forum. And yeah, that one was a lot more obvious.

It doesn't really matter what I call the game, or what you call it. Eventually, we'll probably find out what the PMs call it, and since it's their game, guess what? That's probably going to end up being the name, regardless of what we say now. Just like the Beast replaced "AI Web Game" and Project Mu replaced "the Metacortechs Game" in casual conversation.

I added the "Let Op!" when we found out about the Halo connection because a) it made the acronym; b) I thought it was funny; c) it reminds me of a cool screensaver/Winamp plugin by Ryan Geiss called "Drempels"; d) it made Giskard (who IS Dutch) laugh; and lastly, but certainly MOST importantly, e) I wanted desperately to piss you off, even though I had no idea who you were yet.

They probably call it the same thing everyone else already calls it: "I love bees."

Calling a spade a spade; the Apiary.

Let Op kinda grew on me, once I figured out what it was. I'm just glad that someone (feel free to correct me and say who) came up with Haunted Apiary. That works.

I vote for the adding of an extra E to make it "Leet Op!" As in, Elite Operation, which is somewhat descriptive of what we have going on here to hot the axons and put all this crap together.

What's that? I don't get a vote? Aw shucks! Laughing

I still wish we could have the Dana-turning-into-a-bee tagline, but then she went off to China and ate meat donuts, so that's a no go.

*sigh*

At first I didn't understand "Let Op!". And I wasn't sure I liked it, but I came to this vaguely late in the game (motions to the "joined on" date with her avatar) so I figured that it has some meaning to the mods and that was good enough to me. Now that SpaceBass has explained it, I rather like it.

Somebody asked me to have "Let Op" on some t-shirts. I wasn't going to, but now I think I will. Very Happy

And secondly... I don't think "beekeepers" is boring. I think it's actually quite subtle and cool... It's a normal enough word that it doesn't throw people off to much if you say something like, "if anybody shows up looking for 'beekeepers', send them my way please" to your waitress, but uncommon enough to set us appart.

Though, now that we understand how the Operator's Axons work, it would be amusing if we called ourselves "dendrites".
