This is interest debrief stuff... more games should have debriefs, I think!

I didn't play Atalanta because I missed the start completely... wished I hadn't, because the UK needs more ARGs!

Paul, if you're happy to chat about your experiences PMing to someone who didn't play your game to help me with my game design then drop me a PM. If not that's ok, lol. Just thought I'd ask. Smile

Haven't been around much, RL stuff has me busy. Just wanted to say that the game was a fun - if some times head-to-wall confusing - challenge.

One big tip, for future games, though. When you're giving your character a real phone number, make sure to check around for that number being posted on other forums and stuff. The first thing I do with numbers in games is do a google search and reverse look up - and as you know, that's how I knew you were the PM from early on.

Second - Facebook chat not only lags like a toooootal bitch at peak hours, it causes problems with firefox. Iunno about the rest of you, but if I was typing in one tab, and got a message from anyone on facebook, it wouldn't allow me to type at all until I went to the facebook tab, and clicked in the text entry box for the chat. If this hasn't happened to you - you have NOOOO clue how bad the tripple name posts from Vlad were.

I liked the game, but, personally I think there was too much that was 'important' for us to figure out, and then either later dropped or changed, leaving us to wonder what's still important and what's a waste of time. There was a lot of thinking involved in this game, but, with a lack of solid evidence to any of our speculation, it was so nerve wracking at times.

I noticed a ton of #ARG posts on the twitter, and various places. It looks like you were attempting to bring in new players. This was a good idea, but it doesn't look like it caught on. Maybe next time - push for that in the beginning a bit more?

To the joining the ministry bit. It didn't seem like we could really do that, at least in my eyes. JPW didn't seem to be the type that would reach out and allow people in to the ministry, and would rather just use them as he could. It would have been interesting to have both 'good' and 'bad' players (to use generic terms.)

On that - I know you commented about it being nice to have JPW have a direct rival, in the way I was playing. Was there anything about the rivalry between him and myself that changed any 'planned' aspect of the game?

I'm so glad James posted, because I've been watching this thread thinking I was going to be a huge Debbie Downer. I have been having some RL stuff come up recently, but I was always watching the main thread and checking FB when I could remember. To be quite honest, I got bored with the whole thing. The introduction of JPW was great and made it really interesting, but at a certain point, which I honestly can't pinpoint, I just felt incredibly overwhelmed with information and had no idea what to do with any of it. It was all very interesting, but it was also incredibly confusing and, as James said, without any solid evidence that we were on the right track with anything, became incredibly frustrating.

For a while, I thought that was kind of where we were headed with this, which would've been cool, in a way, but probably would've made me even more paranoid and suspicious, lol.

About Facebook: I actually disabled my chat about a month ago. Between Vlad and Vanessa trying to chat with me and RL friends, it got really overwhelming. I think any other instant messaging program would've been fine, but FB is so freaking laggy. I had the same problem as James, with being unable to send/type messages at times. By the time I would get something typed out, Vlad would be getting pissed off and needed an answer RIGHT NOW and I'd be sitting at my computer cussing Facebook and it's slow ass chat.

In all, I really liked it. I think perhaps the week long hiatus we had, where most of us did absolutely nothing to try to figure anything out (lol slackers) was probably the point where I started to lose interest. Vlad kept saying we had all this information, none of us really knew what we should be looking at, and really had no clue what was important or what wasn't. I really liked the characters, though, absolutely. It was definitely interesting and I actually learned some stuff from it!

Yeah, I had to repost to agree with this one. I definitely learned stuff...about the Coventry Blitz, Moonlight Sonata, and, uh, other stuff I can't recall right now but has made its way into the network of stuff in my brain Smile. ARGs as education, woohoo!

Noted.
AS a PM I had to balance 'keeping the players interested/doinjg something' and 'not overwhelmed'. I veered too much to the former as tehre were more plans with the info but, as explained earlier, the plans had to change due to RL situation [couldn't buy certain things and the 'machine' was delayed... yes there IS a machine...! Smile

FB - noted.
Can anyone suggest an alternative:

Needs to host images, chat and information. Needs to ideally not require 'joining up' but also have possibility to 'reward' joining...
My net person who was going to hjelp couldn't - anyone in London area who could help???

Try a ning. It does require signing up, but I know several players already have ning log-ins. It has all those things you need, and, although there is no native logging function for the chat room, the chat room is so much smoother. Oh, and it's a chat -room- not just individual chats. And it's free.

I'd be glad to talk to you further about how to set up a ning, etc. If you wanted "sides," you could set it up with semi-competitive, but definitely discrete "groups." Groups are private, so that means that group information is kept within the group. I've used it to play past games (Purity Towers and Evelyn Offscreen both used them "competitively"; Maddison Atkins used a ning "cooperatively"), and have considered using it for a project of my own. If you'd like, I can invite you to one to play around, etc.

BUT!!!! Learn from the mistakes of the past, and do not allow players to have admin rights, esp. the right to ban other players. I cannot emphasize this enough.

edit: added some details about nings. and cleaned up my grammar, cause I need ..... Coffee ....

Oh yes, Nings are a super altenatative and can be used very creatively. Am a member at four of 'em (helped setting up one) and a character I created in my newest group (a photo journalist) won a fan art award. I was totally over the moon happy.

So, of course Paul, plse feel free to bend my ear re Nings/other chat & info sites. It's solely the PM's choice to appoint player-admins which works fine as long as the PM sets up concrete guidelines and the player-members exhibit normal courtesy and common sense in abiding by the intended purpose of the game's Ning group. Am looking forward to Vanessa Part Deus.

Finally, another great site for posting content, music etc. with free chat links and FB. twitter etc. sharing is WEBS

I don't think I did, but was aware, quite quickly, that this would be a limited time ARG and wanted to keep the players on track.
I also, however, wanted them [and myself] to benefit from the coincidence/consilience that occurred in the looking for information.

By my count, you posted in that thread at least three dozen times including the initial post.

If you want to keep players on track, you should design ways within the game to do that. If you want to be able to play along with your players, you should also include that within your design and it should not include "well, I'll just post on Unfiction whenever the going gets rough" - aside from any number of other reasons why this is not ideal, it is against the rules of this forum. This is not only mentioned in the Terms of Service which you agree to when you register, but it is linked to on every page of the forum in the big welcome box at the top of the page which states "read these rules before posting your new killer campaign".

thanks imbri for the count.
Now, aside from me as a PM being horribly crap, breaking rules and such - ot in spirit but will feebly raise the 'this was my first arg' card again [and point to the apology at beginning of this thread for doing so] is there anything else I can do to make it better - what did people think of images? Admittedly FB wasn't great for hosting but will look into 'ning and WEBS' - thanks for suggestions.

Will now basically retire from this thread as I have a lot of suggestions and ideas - feel free to pm me if you have any questions or ideas though - thanks everyone for playing!

So since we've had this thread come to its conclusion I will go ahead and lock it I will go ahead and ponder about post-game talks. IMHO N&R is not really the area for those kinds of conversations anyways (can anyone give me an AME...errr...IRC CHAT!). Smile

Future inputs please PM Cresent as indicated. Cheers!

I definitely regretted that RL kept me from participating in this more! I thought the different characters were definitely believable, and the story was totally engaging. It's the sort of thing that would make a good novel- I'd totally read it.

I will admit that there were times where I felt like there was no point to all the information we were being given. It was really interesting stuff, but I didn't know what were were supposed to be looking for, and what it would do, and that got me kinda confused. And like others have said, Facebook is incredibly buggy for me, and that made things difficult.

Overall, I really liked it, and I would totally be interested in more with the Ministry and suchlike. Very Happy

(sorry this is late- I thought I had hit send ages ago Embarassed )

Edit: Way to refresh and follow instructions. *headdesk*
