[META] San Diego Area Axon Hunters Coordinate Here!

Someone should probably start off by posting your axons and current status (see e.g. what bagsbee did for nyc or if you want to get fancy what chappy and I have done for DC).

Official San Diego Crew - Do we have a name?

Ensign Kamen - TuxKamen
In the first round of live calls, Kamen stood up to the challenge! He is our first trusted crew member in San Diego. Surprised He has been a dedicated and worthy member of the San Diego Axon hunters, and we're all proud to have him mentioned by The Operator. Go Kamen! Fighto! Fighto! Ganbatte yo!

Major Ace - Not signed on here, Nuriko's boyfriend
Took initiative and enlisted himself as an Elite Forces officer on the ship Apocalypso. His specialties include spying, wiretapping, decoding, and spying on SP loyalists (which is why I think I was not included in the crew >_>).

Give me more San Diego crew members to praise! Go get those phones, kids!

I will maintain the known locations here for future reference.

EDIT 11/2/2004:

seeker > !transmit truth preview 11/4
behold:

This is now in three sections. The first tells you what to do; the second section shows the times, latlon, location and status; and the third section describes each known location.

Instructions:
Be at the proper GPS coordinates--or reasonably close to them--at the appointed time (PDT). A payphone will be there. Ideally, it will ring exactly at the given time. Pick up the phone, and listen to the audio file.

Hints:

1) BRING QUARTERS.
2) OWN THE PHONE.
3) BE PREPARED.

Times
Another shorter block. Cabrillo is gone (surprising!), Zoo also (not).

10:56 PST Banchee, LT
12:19 PST 32.766961 -117.056902 El Cajon 7-11 (dead per Nemesis)
12:34 PST 32.768651 -117.040577 El Cajon Blvd. Taco Shop
12:46 PST Kamen, ENS
13:08 PST 32.763757 -117.197740 Morena Blvd. Carl's Jr
13:34 PST 32.785099 -117.129132 Northside McDonald's

Location Info:

Northside McDonald's
This is the pay phone outside of the McDonald's at Fenton Marketplace (where the Mission Valley CostCo is). The McDonald's is on the corner of Friars and Northside. Should be no trouble to find this.

Address: 2482 Northside Dr.

El Cajon Blvd. 7-11
On El Cajon Blvd. between Rolando Blvd. and 67th St. Reported dead by Nemesis.

El Cajon Blvd. Taco Shop
On the corner of ECB and 73rd.

EDIT: Info courtesy celina63, see page 4 for photo:
celina63 - This is right in front of the Rosendo Taco Shop on the corner of 73rd and El Cajon Blvd. There are 2 payphones right in front (see pictures); the ringer is on the right.

Morena Blvd. Carl's Jr.
EDIT: nemesis - I found the one on morena (which is hot now) its at the carls jr on morena right off the I-8 exit its the left phone, or at least it was.

845 Morena Boulevard
San Diego, CA 92110

Discontinued phones:

Star of India
This is the pay phone in front of the Star of India (at the Maritime Museum of San Diego), located between the Star and the H.M.S. Surprise.

Address: 1492 N Harbor Dr.
Phone: (619) 238-9667

USD
EDIT: celina63 - Doesn't seem to be the library or Olin Hall. Another GPS resource (http://www.inio.org/bees/futureaxons/) seems to have this location being at the MAIN entrance to the school (the second entrance off Linda Vista, rather than the first). According to the USD campus map, there's a University Center in the general area, and a shuttle bus stop. Worth a look-see...

La Jolla
La Jolla (not Mission Bay), on the corner of Coast Blvd. and Jenner St.

EDIT: Info courtesy celina63, see page 2 for photo:
The phones are on the side of an administration building for the beach park, at the bottom of Jenner St. on Coast Blvd. There are two phones - the left one rings, the right one buzzes. There is also one at the top of Jenner in front of a store (by Drury Ln), but I'm pretty certain the correct phones are the ones at the beach. I'm uploading pics of these two phone locations.

Cabrillo National Monument
Point Loma, Cabrillo National Monument, at the payphones directly outside of the auditorium. NOTE: Grounds close at 5:15PM. Since the time for 9/14 is after that, arrive before and bring a book or camera.

Phone: (619) 226-8860 (the one with the phone book attached).

San Diego Zoo
Phones near the San Diego Zoo. There is a bank of four phones directly outside the Zoo. A bank of three phones is inside the Zoo at the Raintree Grill. NOTE: I sent a message to Dana last week saying that phones inside the Zoo were difficult/impossible to get easily. Check the outside phones again.

I can visit the 16:55/Zoo location on most weekdays, and keep heating it up as many times as proves necessary. Unfortunately, I have no idea where it is. Previous visits seem to indicate that the axon is NOT one of the four phones left of the entrance. An exact location for this axon would mean I could provide a reliable connection here.

I thought that it was, actually. Then again, I wasn't there--but those are the most likely candidates if they ring quietly.

The best solution would be to ask the people that made it hot the first time.

This is, most likely, the pay phone in front of the Star of India (at the Maritime Museum of San Diego). Confirm this when hot. Secondary location might be the information booth next to it.

Address: 1492 N Harbor Dr.
Phone: (619) 238-9667

Well, I can confirm that this is the phone, it's a quiet ringer, but it rang today at 13:53. Unfortunately, nobody was on the other end when I picked up. Shouldn't be a problem for me to try it again tomorrow. There was a good possibility that I just picked it up on the last ring, traffic was a little worse than I expected on Harbor.

I'm about to head out to check the 16:13 I Hate You. I drove by it the other day checking inside the bounds of the cemetery and didn't see any payphones, but I'll make sure to head down early today so I can snoop around a bit more.

Thanks for confirming.

I just can't imagine that a pay phone would be available inside the grounds. The only visitor's facility there is the gravesite locator. Cabrillo has a visitor's center and the auditorium, as I listed before, so that would be a likely place to check if you *don't* find anything of note at the cemetery. Just keep driving through.

Yeah, I wandered a bit around the cemetery and decided there was no way I was going to find a phone. I went on up to Cabrillo (buying an annual pass, I love the tide pools Smile ) and just hoped the map was off. Fortunately, it was. I Hate You is HOT.

Great work.

For reference, can you tell us exactly where the phone was at the monument? Was it one of the auditorium phones?

Yes, right outside the door to the auditorium.

OK, good. I updated the status.

Things we need now:

- Confirming *which* Zoo phone is the one
- Figuring out what the La Jolla location is
- Activating them, obviously

Forgot to clarify that it was the 8860 phone that I answered.

Zoo Phone

I am almost certain that the Zoo phone is not one of the four directly in front of the zoo. I was there on time on wednesday, and had no success. However, I didn't have a chance to test the phones beforehand (too many tourists, though they conveniently left just before the time), so I couldn't check to see if they were working and actually audibly rang. Hopefully I'll either be able to check again friday or else check the La Jolla spot.

Well, okay. I wonder who answered it last time? If it's not one of the four, there are other phone banks. Problem is, the three on the 'list' are in the Raintree Grill, which is inside the Zoo itself. Any other ones would be nearby and outside, but the Zoo map doesn't show any obvious spots. It could be one of the surrounding attractions. I don't recall whether the Miniature Railroad or the Carousel have pay phones.

Info updated.

UPDATE:

Today's updates provide hints to next week's axons. Focus on this week's, of course, but this will prepare.

This is most of NEXT WEEK'S axons. We may have another coming, but unsure. Note that one person COULD make the first two in sequence if they were lucky and knew where the Zoo phone was.

08:05 32.720605 -117.172889 - Star of India

08:19 32.736089 -117.149150 - San Diego Zoo

11:09 32.766961 -117.056902 - NEW LOCATION
On El Cajon Blvd. between Rolando Blvd. and 67th St. celina63 indicates this may be a 7-11 phone.

16:07 32.785099 -117.129132 - Northside McDonald's

16:21 32.847369 -117.277297 - Unknown La Jolla location.

17:09 32.690600 -117.245000 - Cabrillo National Monument.
