I would be absolutely flabergasted to see any of the ILB characters in any version of Halo 2. With the exception of Jan, none of them would control at all like a SPARTAN... and even Jan couldn't wear Mjolnir armour without injuring herself. (She may have the speed and reflexes, but she certainly doesn't have the training.)

Just spent the last couple of days eating through the books: while I agree with you on the main point (just 'cos they're set in the same universe certainly doesn't mean they have to cross paths!) I disagree that Jan couldn't be fitted into a MJOLNIR suit.

Dr Halsey wrote:
"Normal humans don't have the reaction time or strength required to drive this system," she explained. "You do.[...]You'll have to move very slowly and deliberately until you get a feel for the armor[sic] and how it works."[...]Dr Halsey slowly coached [the MC] through the basics of walking and gradually built up the speed and complexity of his motions. After fifteen minutes he could walk, run, and jump almost without thinking of the difference between normal motion and suit motion.

[that's from Fall of Reach, btw]

Although the MC later hurts himself in comedy stylee when saluting, I don't think lack of training is really an issue. Whether Jan's had any bone enhancements (no, not like that. Gutterminds Rolling Eyes Wink) would be more important.

Besides, we don't need Jan playable: there's more than enough Spartans still around Very Happy

Some spoilers dealing with the Halo storyline below for those who haven't read the books:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Where did the "three extra slots in the campaign" come from? Last I heard it was only spec that there would be a four-player co-op option because there were three other Spartans with the Master Chief at the end of the First Strike novel on their way back to Earth. I can't back this up because I forget where it was, but I read something posted by a Bungie employee that said it would still just be a 2 player co-op campaign like it was with Halo.

As of First Strike and pre-Halo 2, we know that there are five living Spartans. One of them, Kelly, was wisked away by Dr. Halsey for an important covert mission that nobody else knows about, leaving the John (MC), Linda, Fred and Will en route to Earth with a warning that the Covenant are on their way.

It's possible that one (or more?) these characters could be playable since they're Spartans and the game wouldn't have to be changed, but it's very unlikely there will be any other type of playable ally; marines, civilians, whatever. Elites are playable in multiplayer only because they are evenly matched in strength, speed, etc. with the Spartans. No changes to the game engine necessary. Of course we won't know until Halo 2 actually comes out, but I highly doubt any of these characters will play any major roles in the game itself.

Jan might have some enhancements, but the Spartans were by no means just "stuck with a needle". I can't see Jan being fit for the Mark V armor, much less the Mark VI armor that will be worn in Halo 2. She lacks the augmentations, which include bone enhancements and neural implants that greatly increase their reaction speeds needed to control the armor. Without them it would be suicide to even try the armor on.

But don't get me wrong, I'd love to see one of these characters in-game as an easter egg or minor role.

PS- If this sounds like a bunch of rambling nonsense... Coffee

It may be overthinking it to say that if there's four-player co-op (which I hadn't heard before), then there must be four different playable characters. In the first Halo, you could play two-player co-op. Who was the second Spartan? It was... er... also Master Chief. Who does everyone play when they're in multiplayer? Er... they're all Master Chief. I don't think it's necessary to explain away who these other Spartans are.

okay i was probably off with four player co-op, just seemed like i heard there was gonna be four player online optional co-op, but i have some friends that have the ability to tell me bull about things lol. Nonetheless im pretty sure that what the idea of only one master chief in this game stemmed from was being asked about the fact that in co-op in the original there were two MC and it didnt make sense and that bungie said there would only be one MC this time aroung, again im not one hundred percent on this, ill try and look into it if i get time. Forgot all about kelly, for some reason had it in my mind all spartans died, and i lent out my Fall of Reach book to someone so i cant reference it!

To me that came across as a hand-waving acknowledgement of augmentation without any knowledge as to how it was achieved, but I suppose you could interpret it that way.

Mark VI? Oooooh Very Happy [aside: maybe it'd scan as a Class3 combat skin Wink]

As demonstrated by the hapless Marine in the first book. But then again we don't know Jan hasn't the necessary augmentation - the fact that she took a 3-storey dive and didn't break anything implies bone enhancement to me. But hey Smile

Don't forget [I think] there were also some test specimens mentioned in Fall of Reach - they never underwent the same amounts of augmentation as the Spartans (and thus couldn't wear MJOLNIR armour) but were still damn fast and strong. My [spec] is that Jan is either one of these test subjects or a member of Ackerson's trials, but we need more data Smile

Absolutely Smile

I meant she wouldn't be able to wear the armor in Halo 2, pretty much eliminating her being playable. =P

I don't remember any other test subjects that were physically augmented in Fall of Reach. Do you mean the ODSTs?

I'm pretty sure the Spartans were the first to be trained and enhanced. When Halsey started it was, at the time, a long shot attempt to help bring peace to the colonies who were about to erupt into civil war. They were just lucky that they finished the Spartan program before the Covenant showed up on the scene. But even after the Spartans were popular for their success their pasts had to be kept a secret because of the immoral way things were done.

But then again, Ackerson has a new "Special Weapons Operation" and that file named SIII on his computer. It's possible Jan was involved with him somehow, but then why isn't she still?

I guess we really won't know more until we get these next wavs.

has anyone thought that maybe these characters would just be help to mc?

spoiler.....

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
cortana was hacked in first strike, making her slow down and she thought she was gonna die out shortly. maybe these new characters, specifically durga {who is with jersey(who has a crush on jan/found out secrets)} and kamal (with superior hacking skills) could help MC along by utilizing their powers where cortana was used in the first game.

Idea OOOH BREAKTHROUGH, the cortana letters introuduced us with background info to cortana, secondary to mc as she helped him through halo. is it possible that these wav files are doing the same thing? introducing characters that, while not playable, could be vital in helping the chief along?
