Reconnection: Trey's version

Things got so crazy/busy I didn't have time to update this blog for awhile.

Anyway, on Monday I think it was, when I got back to the Tropicana there was a message waiting for Carl Copeland from Lee Roy: "I'm waiting for you at the Brew Café." Suddenly I was like floored with conflicting emotions. Part of me of course wanted to bolt. At the same time, after a month on the lam the thought of seeing somebody I knew was compelling. The latter won out, so without further hesitation lest I chicken out, I went straight over to the Café, still dressed in my biker's garb and all.

Walking in, it didn't take me long to spot Lee, sitting alone at a table towards the back, looking more scruffy than usual... unshaven and a ballcap pulled down low over his eyes… I guess a lame attempt at disguising himself; made me smile. So I walked over and asked him in a low voice, "Anybody sitting here?" which on the surface was an absurd question, what with the place being half empty at the time.

He looked up, not doubt wary as I was, blinking with obvious uncertainty, but shook his head no, gesturing for me to be seated. His eyes looked me over thoroughly, trying to confirm that I was who he suspected and hoped I was. I said "Hey!" quietly, then nodded in confirmation. My disguise was pretty good, but as we locked eyes there was recognition.

I was holding my breath, not sure whether anger, relief or a mixture would greet me once we reconnected. There was no handshake or hug exchanged… partly because Lee & I hadn't been tight personally, but then also of course we both instinctively concurred on the need to be discreet in a public place.

So I did most of the talking, and he listened intently, asking only a few questions. I briefly tried to fill him in on why I had vanished, the scope of the problem, and what I still needed to do. Bottom line, I'd have to return to campus to enable Lee to fully restore the system… yet it'd be dangerous and counterproductive for A. Trey Nich to openly reappear there.

After about an hour's confab and sharing a meal, the plan was for me to get a head start back. I'd need to ditch the bike, check out and get a flight back under my true identity as time was of the essence. Mardi Gras the following evening was a window of opportunity. Lee would follow on a later flight. Anna Graham would be our point of contact, though I didn't attempt to define my relationship with her to Roy and he didn't press the matter.

Oh, and I agreed that Lee could post his own account of our encounter here on Posterous, so look for that soon.
