Hi & new storylet?
Intro from Bladesman & storeylet? - Cheery Gentleman

Hi,

started playing this game two days ago, now hooked Laughing in game name is same as here and, obv, @Bladesman on twitter, not my main a/c twitter so I don't annoy too many people, Wink Do please link up.

Thanks to all those players who have contributed to the content on this thread (just finished reading through, very helpful) and to the wiki which I've only just started dipping into (don't want to spoil too much) but looks even more helpful.

One thing I did try to find in the wiki was the consequence of the 'Cheery Gentleman' Storylet that I've just unlocked by reaching 5 in Nightmares (at lodgings). The text is below.

Quote:
A cheery gentleman

In the street, you pass a tall, cheerful man with a brisk manner, a stovepipe hat and a row of bright brass buttons down the front of his coat...

(you unlocked this with Nightmares 5

Couldn't find any mention here or in the wiki, is it new, or, more likely, have I just failed to find the right reference... Embarassed

I was considering going down the Nightmares path and was wondering if 'go'ing with this storylet would be a help or a hinder. Looks like I'm going to have to fin out for myself. Will post how I get on.

Updated:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

A cheery gentleman

In the street, you pass a tall, cheerful man with a brisk manner, a stovepipe hat and a row of bright brass buttons down the front of his coat. He winks familiarly as you pass and spreads his hands: eight fingers.

You've seen him before. Of course you have. He was beside your bed when you woke this morning. Or were you still asleep?

Note: Your Nightmares are reaching a dangerous level.

Nightmares +2

Smile almost there - Nightmare 7.5

Honestly, I don't know what the point of building up dreams is but when your nightmares reach 8 you go to the nut house and have to get your nightmares back to 0 to get out. It's fun to play at but it's not really a storylet or ambition that you start and carry throughout the game.

The more I get immersed in Fallen London the more I think Echo Bazaar is a genius piece of work. The main RPG element is entertaining enough, with plenty of love and artistry put into it, but where this game really excels is the ARG / social / roleplay element brought about by the fantastic use of Twitter.

I use my Twitter account (@Staxxington) as a purely 'ingame' account - all tweets are 100% in character. This adds an extra layer that I haven't found in any other game.

Once I've used up my 10 actions for the hour, I expand on what happened to me in the storylets / opportunities by writing fanciful tweets. These use the ingame scenarios as a base but sometimes take on a life of their own, especially when the Masters and other characters get involved (which is pleasantly often), meaning that storylines play on OUTSIDE the mechanics of the game.

On occasion, situations and stories that have arisen via roleplaying on Twitter with the Masters have actually affected my ingame progress and changed / created items.

Also the friendships / rivalries created by the roleplaying aspect are great fun, and can be bolstered by ingame actions such as 'lodgings storylet invitations' and Knife & Candle.

If anyone wants to get involved in some Fallen London roleplaying then hit @Staxxington up over Twitter, and maybe one day you'll be lucky enough to get an invite to one of my infamous Blackwing Absinthe-fueled soirees?

Similarly, my OC is 'MeriaciousSmith' :'D

I'm not sure the game designers initally intended so much interaction of twitter, but it definitely makes the game tons more fun!

I just noticed Sinning Jenny's ingame profile.

That will probably disappear soon, if it hasn't already. Mr Fires had one at one point too, I think it's just a mistake when a character gets one. That particular profile line means they haven't even finished the character creation process anyway.

Just started playing myself - follow curious_fellow if you care to, working on getting into character and enjoying the game. Wonderfully made, very atmospheric, draws you in. Smile

Absinthe?

No taste sweeter or more bitter... I'd love a drink!

TREAT WITH CAUTION. That stuff is like LSD laced rocket-fuel. Have fun!

My suspicion is starting to get high enough that I might go to new newgate again soon. I am considering letting this happen just to experience it, but before I do I was wondering if you lose any items/qualities/connections by going there? (Didn't see anything about it on the wiki...)

You lose only the actions you use up while you're there. Unless you happen to hit a card that reduces a stat, but it's not anything major.

Unlike madness, which will outright remove any Recurring Dreams qualities you have Evil or Very Mad

Why do you want Recurring Dreams qualities?

Like most qualities, some Recurring Dreams unlock further storylets or enable you to play certain opportunity cards.

And another one joins the madness! I've just gotten hooked on Echo Bazaar, myself. And, like many of you, I've created a twitter account just for this purpose. I'm RipperJill on Twitter, same as here, a sweet lil' girl in love with Jack o' Smiles. Sweet, I tell you! Lovelorn, even. And murderous.
