Gavin put his gun in his pocket and listened to the man. Then he turned back to Faye who Kate was treating. He was crying without him knowing. He was watching one of the......no, who was he fooling? The most important person in the world to him in pain and getting treated.

Why? Why the hell couldn't I protect her?

The man started asking questions suddenly. Who was he? He looked different from anyone she's seen so far.

"She will be alright if you can give me some room," she grunted out at him. "As David said, that thing attacked us," she added while making sure Faye didn't move.

Kate used the last of the water in her canteen to make sure the wound on her forehead was clean, used an antiseptic wipe to disinfect the wound and lightly pressed an adhesive bandage over it, keeping her palm over it to stop the bleeding.

"Faye, can you hear me? Tell me what you see, are you okay?" she asked. "I'm checking to see if she has a concussion," she said, but seeing how out of it she was, she assumed she did have one and started getting the ice pack out of the kit. "Make sure she doesn't move her head much," she ordered Jake.

"right now if we want," David said to the overseer, "but she'll only be able to go for a few more miles before i'll have to do some serious repair work and i don't have all the tools required. the place we were headed to might." he might wonder how i know that, hell i don't know how i know that. "i heard some of the civies talking about it back at the factory."

"Good with the car then? I say we take a break first, you all look worse for wear."

He shifted from side to side, then snapped up. He'd forgotten to introduce himself. "I'm the Overseer. My job is to lead, guide and instruct all teams tracking down that...thing. That includes regular army as well."

He stared at David and Kate pointedly for a moment. "I'm just glad some people are still alive. My radio's getting nothing but static, that thing's still out there...god knows what it's doing."

Faye was suddenly, and rather unpleasantly, pulled out of her blissful unconsciousness. She tried to move her head, only to wince and hiss from the stabbing pain that resulted. Jake was instantly next to her, hands hovering over her head.

Reaching up to touch her forehead, which was throbbing painfully, she stared at Kate, eyes unfocused. "...Yeah...yeah I can hear you I think. Is something ringing, though? Weird..." As Kate moved away to get an ice pack, her hand was replaced by Jake's, holding something on her forehead.

"Wait...where are we...what happened?" she tried to wriggle around in her seat, but the combination of pain from both her back and head, plus Jake's hand holding her still prevented her from seeing much.

She felt something wet on her face, and spent a few seconds trying to decide what it was. Wait, am I....why am I crying? Huh? She gingerly reached her hand up, wiping tears from her eyes. What's going on, anyways? I wish I could see straight.

Impatient, she struggled a bit again, Jake pushing her down.

"Don't move, Faye," ordered Kate as she lightly pressed the icepack against her head. "Yeah, she definitely has a concussion," she murmured.

She overhead the conversation by the Overseer and the others and couldn't help but add her two cents. "I'm apart of the Ranger Unit sent here, you know, the one that didn't make it?" she said, slightly bitter about it. "Better briefings could have saved them..." she muttered to herself, checking Faye's other wounds.

He turned, looking at Kate curiously. Behind the mask, one eyebrow went up. She sounded.. bitter? The man shook his head. He couldn't help her, but he could at least try and give her an explanation.

"Honestly, I agree with you. Your Rangers SHOULD have been given better briefings, but.. command has been...hush about this. They didn't even want the regular military involved at first."

Rangers.. Ranger Unit. That's right, they were one of the groups he had asked for.

"I remember your unit...you were supposed to meet up with one of my teams..." He trailed off for a few seconds before speaking again. "Do you remember what happened?" he asked.

"No," she simply said. After a moment of hesitance, she gave him the details. "I blacked out and woke up to find my team dead. No one's seem to have ever seen the rest of the unit."

Kate cursed silently to herself, biting down on her lip. "Fuckin' government...can't keep silent about somethin' like this..." she growled.

Blood.

He could feel blood pulsing from his temple, flowing out onto the ground and staining it dark brown. It wasn't much but it was enough to cause his head to sting badly, and to prevent any train of coherent thought.

Then with a SNAP! everything was back in sharp focus, blurring in and out before Terrence's eyes in blots of green and brown. He leaned over, weakly raising himself in a push-up, before throwin-up painfully all over the ground. Unfortunately, his arms weren't strong enough to hold him up for long, and the white-haired man toppled down into a small pool of his own vomit.

Whatever happened? One minute he was in the suburban, being tossed about wildly and banging his head against something hard and metal. The next moment...

No.

Oh, no, no no NO!

The sickening thought occured to Terrence that he had 'jumped', possibly just as his friends had all been slaughtered. The idea terrified him, enough to give him strength to jump to his feet. 'Fuck!' He whirled around and the world danced before him, spinning out of focus for a moment.

When finally things refocused, the first thing Terrence's blue eyes caught sight of was...The Masked Man. about ten feet away, standing with his back turned. He clenched his fists, frozen with fear. This must have meant that the Tall One was nearby, and perhaps his friends. But what to do?

Terrence stood on the precipic of decision, unable to make a move.

Faye stayed still, because Kate looked like she meant business, but she itched to look around. All she could see was Jake's face, his eyes red-rimmed, mouth set in a grim line. And Kate's face kept fading in and out of her blurred sight, but she looked almost....angry.

At about that point, Faye started to really feel every cut bruise and bump, and she grimaced, and the Overseer came into focus. Startled, she sat up before Jake could tug her back down. "Whoah." Her stomach churned, and she covered her mouth, willing herself not to vomit. Alright....this sucks.

Faye noticed the expression on Kate's face, and felt a rush of anger for Kate's team. Was this Overseer man responsible for what had happened to them?

Kate noticed the expression on Faye's face and shook away any emotions she was feeling.

"You need to throw up?" she asked, knowing the answer. "Jake, move her slightly, I'll cushion her head. She needs to let it out, it's not good holding that gunk inside," she said, moving her ever so slightly so she could throw up outside of the vehicle.

Kate glanced back at the Overseer. "Sir, you wouldn't happen to have any water or any other kind of fluids on your person?" she questioned, stoned faced again.

He caused all of this, didn't he? I have to focus, damn it, she thought to herself.

"I have a spare canteen..."

He offered it to her, noting the expression on her face. Oh, she was angry at him.. well, how did she think HE felt? "I didn't want this to happen, you know." he said, a bit of sadness in the old mans voice.

She looked startled. "I can tell by your face. I know that you feel like your soldiers were killed for no reason."

He was talking fast, unable to stop himself as he tried to explain. "But you have no idea how long this...THING has been doing this to people. Dozens, no hundreds of people. How long we've tried to.."

"I had to take a chance to stop it." he finished, deciding to end it before he said anything else.

"Could have at least fuckin' told us what we're here for..." she growled, her anger returning.

Kate wrenched the canteen from his hand, opened the top and handed it to Jake. "When she's finished with her business, make sure she drinks some water. She needs fluids. I know she's not going to want any but make her drink it," she told him, standing up from her seat to let Faye throw up.

"I can't do much more for her," she said to Jake.

The Overseer barely heard what Kate had said about Faye, and honestly didn't care. Her continued attitude, even as he tried to explain was pissing him off. He understood that she would be bitter, but there was a limit.

The man could practically feel his blood boiling. Underneath the gas mask, his skin was bright red from anger. "You think I had a choice? You think I didn't WANT to?" He said, his voice rising. Underneath his gas mask, he could feel his cheeks continue to burn. God, the arrogant bitch really thought she was the only one that had been affected by this thing.

"I argued with those men for DAYS over whether to inform you people! I did all I could, but it was either this or scrub the mission ENTIRELY!"

He was almost shouting now.

"I'd do ANYTHING to kill that thing. Do you understand me? ANYTHING. It's been doing what it does for years, the SAME THING it did to your squad! Killing and killing and moving from place to place, for CENTURIES. This thing is in our myths, our legends!"

He stared at her, glaring. Slowly, he breathed and felt himself calming down. His voice was lower now as he spoke, a hint of bitterness still readable.

"I'm sorry about your squad, really.. I am. I saw a chance to try and stop it, and I took it.. I didn't know this is what would happen..."

Jake accepted the canteen, and helped Faye to lean over the seat so she could vomit, holding her hair away from her face. She threw up a few times, shoulders shaking, before sputtering and coughing. He gave her the canteen, and she protested a bit, but he leaned in, muttering something in her ear that made her start drinking the water sullenly.

As he scanned the forest outside the windows, he realized something. Where's...that white haired guy? he wondered, double checking the faces of everyone nearby. "Uh....where'd..Terrence go?" he asked quietly, hoping the man hadn't run into some bad luck.

Faye, hearing him, panicked, looking around frantically. "Shit...." She heard the Overseer and Kate arguing, anger in their voices, but she was focused on Terrence. How did he just disappear like that? Was it the same way he'd first met her, when he'd just suddenly appeared from the forest?
