[SPEC] Princess/Flea 2nd Conversation - Discuss

I searched... many trouted & locked threads on the topic of lookingglass.html but no threads discussing its content. Trout me freely if I missed them. The new Princess/Flea conversation found here http://www.ilovebees.com/lookingglass.html has some interesting tidbits... I thought they might warrent some spec, discussion, whatever. The lines I found interesting were as follows....

"I mean, why not:
Seek balloons!
Behold balloons!
Reveal balloons!
That is the law, or at least 10/6ths of the law in this size!"

10/6ths???

"Seek a train leaving Dockyard Station at 450 kmh
Behold a second train, loaded with cupcakes, approaching from the north at .28 c
Reveal a very messy accident with translight whipped cream potential"

0.28c is approximately 8.4*10^7 m/s ... 'c' being the standard letter for the speed of light.

Thoughts?

EDIT - Moved thread to "General/Updates" - thought the spec nature of the discussion would fit better there than in "puzzles"; Added topic tag - SG

I was thinking this exact thing earlier today. I had no idea what to make of it, though, because I'm a sleep-deprived cubicle slave. My brain was at a loss for what to do with the information, but clearly something is in the Princess' dialogue with the Flea. I almost wonder if it isn't another "kitchen" -style reference, but I tried a few of the numbers in .html form and got 404'd.

I'm tired right now, but someone with a hankering for number crunching ought to look into this sometime.

Quick edit, now that I'm thinking about it: 10/6 could mean October 6th something may occur utilizing baloons, or something.... Or it could be I'm off my rocker entirely.

Second edit, because I just caught this--Tycho's from my town! Holy shiest, I never thought I'd find another Beekeeper from K-town!

This sounded familiar -- it's almost certainly a reference to this famous illustration for Alice in Wonderland:

Shocked Holy crap. Can we find any other images, or in the original novel somewhere does it mention specifically that the Mad Hatter wears 10/6 on his hat in every rendition? (As opposed to, say, just having a random overlarge fraction on the hat?) Maybe SP is insane, and is trying to clue us in? ...or maybe she thinks the Flea is insane?

...Too many Alice references in this whole scheme to ignore.

If I edit too many times, will some moderator come eat my soul?:
October 6 is celebrated as Mad Hatter day, but the number represents the cost of the hat, in shillings/sixpence.

Well, Mad Hatter's got the same sign/fraction on his hat in the Disney Version also...

I think that the SP was just teasing the Flea. But I wouldn'd doubt her making references to things in doing so. I'm willing to bet they hold no story reference, just reminding us that the the Sleeping Princess learnt from the things we sent her.

I'm pretty sure there's no specific mention of the fraction in the text itself, but the illustration I linked comes from the first edition of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (well, first edition of the book under that name -- it gets complicated). Sir John Tenniel, the illustrator, is the best-known illustrator of Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. I'd say the illustrations are famous enough that "10/6 in this style" has become a definite part of the Mad Hatter's attire.

There are actually already a lot of topics discussing the Princess/Flea's second discussion on the LookingGlass page. I think it would be a better idea to continue discussion there, since it's all about the same thing really. No point having 7 topics talking about just 1/7th of something.

EDIT: Eck, forget I said anything. This school computer sucks, and I only just loaded it completely and realised it was locked. ^^;;

Er, that one's locked.

Edit: actually, this thread is the only one I see currently discussing this. Why not continue?

The aforementioned thread was for the deciphering of the puzzle hidden in the jpgs.

This thread is meant to discuss the actual "meaning" behind what the text found after deciphering the puzzle.

Please continue discussion on that here. Smile

Does it seem to anyone else like the Sleeping Princess has a wide-ranged fairy-tale basis on which to draw all of her clues, puzzles and statements? So far, we've seen Alice hints, Snow White hints, and if Sleeping Princess isn't a dead-ringer for Sleeping Beauty, I'd be highly surprised.

Who knows? Perhaps our next clue will lead to pumpkin.html and we'll read some text talking about mice and stepsisters...

Seek balloons!
Behold balloons!
Reveal balloons!

Made me think of this...

"It's like this," Pooh said. "When you go after honey with a balloon,
the great thing is not to let the bees know you're coming. Now, if you
have a green ballon, they might think you were only part of the tree,
and not notice you, and if you have a blue balloon, they might think
you were only part of the sky, and not notice you, and the question
is: Which is most likely?"

"Wouldn't they notice YOU underneath the balloon?" Christopher Robin asked.

"They might or they might not," said Winnie-the- Pooh. "You never can
tell with bees."

(from "Winnie-the-Pooh")

And yes... I did send it to the Sleeping Princess via her email... Because, I mean, why not?

Very Happy

Indeed, the Mad Hatter always wears the price ticket for his hat. (10 shillings and sixpence - the way English prices used to be written, pre-decimalisation in 1971. It's not originally a fraction - it just looks like one. A quick google shows no mention of the price in the original text either, though.

from http://ask.yahoo.com/ask/20000508.html :

What does the "10/6" mean on the Mad Hatter's hat from Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland?
Ashley
Santa Clara, California

Dear Ashley:
We began by searching Yahoo! for "Alice in Wonderland." We were rewarded with 2 categories and 20 sites about Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (the complete title of the Lewis Carroll book). We suspected the site from Carnegie Mellon University might offer some scholarly insight, so off we headed.
Once there, we found an image of The Mad Hatter's Tea Party by an illustrator named Tenniel. In the picture, the piece of paper attached to the Mad Hatter's top hat reads "In this style 10/6." Looked like a price tag to us, but we wanted to be sure, so we continued on.

We returned to Yahoo! and typed in "Tenniel," which led us to the Sir John Tenniel category in the Yahoo! directory. We clicked around and found a biography of the illustrator. Sir John Tenniel was a prolific and noted illustrator who produced over 2,000 cartoons, including many caricatures and political cartoons for the satirical magazine Punch. But we still hadn't found a reference to the mysterious "10/6."

Back at Yahoo! we typed in "the Mad Hatter," and browsed through a list of site matches, but nothing looked promising, so we went on to the web page matches. A site about Mad Hatter Day piqued our curiosity so we headed there. We learned that Mad Hatter Day is the "second silly day" of the year (the first being April Fool's Day) and is celebrated on 10/6 (October 6 in the United States; June 10 in Britain). Was the "10/6" a reference to a date?

Looking for confirmation, we clicked on a link to another Mad Hatter Day page. At last we found our answer. The site explains that while Mad Hatter Day is celebrated on 10/6 in honor of the number on the top hat, "some astute observers have noted that the paper in the Mad Hatter's Hat was really an order to make a hat in the style shown, to cost ten shillings sixpence."

There you have it -- the "10/6" appears to be the price of the hat. So, next time you pass someone on the street wearing a hat with the price tag still attached, you can thank (or blame) John Tenniel for starting this revolutionary fashion trend.

Beautiful catch!

(I also like the avatar ^_^ )

now, when thinking of Alice In Wonder I recall that she gets shrunk (the mention of size) and when I try to think of red things in the movie, I definitely think of painting the roses red (this being the red ballons for the new story on the 404 page). My brain isn't coming up with anything awesome, but I just wanted to mention some things I was thinking about.
