Thanks AD. Here's a summary of the 8 axons we have this week:

07:15 PDT awful_fast (40.757145 -73.98724): HOT. NY Times building on 43rd St, between 7th & 8th Aves. It's pretty simple to find - enter the lobby and make an immediate left, there's a little alcove right next to the mail room with 2 phones, it's the first one as you walk in.

08:01 PDT panic_button (40.807981 -73.963556): NOT HOT. 116th St & Broadway, next to Columbia University. As per SocialElite, there's loads of phones at this location, we need to coordinate on this one.

10:33 PDT curious_girl (40.729724 -73.995423): HOT. NYU area. I haven't been to this axon, anyone wanna comment on it?

10:37 PDT curious_girl (40.75201 -73.981868): HOT. NY Public Library, 40th & 5th. This phone is located on the 2nd floor of the library, right next to the ladies' room in the back.

12:57 PDT code_word (40.804247 -73.966734): NOT HOT. 110th St & Broadway, very close to 08:01 PDT panic_button. Same deal here, loads of phones, needs coordination.

13:23 PDT standard_procedure (40.731895 -73.983688): NOT HOT. 14th St betw. 1st & 2nd. It's a payphone right outside a bodega on the north side of 14th St, about 75 feet away from the NW corner of 14th & 1st. Disregard the GPS coords, they point to the middle of the block, which is wrong.

13:37 PDT shock_sticks (40.7335 -73.995293): HOT. From vlamidala - "For future reference, the mapped coords are right on the dot - the phones are on the inside of an exterior wall at the northeast corner of 5th Ave & 10th St. The building is an NYU freshman dorm (g_d help me) - Rubin Hall, at 35 5th Ave - but the phones are just inside the door, to the right, so you don't need an ID to get in, and NYU security isn't exactly of the caliber that cares when a group of people is hovering around a payphone for twenty minutes. There are two phones in the lobby, both Verizon phones that actually ring quite loudly when called. Melissa's phone is the one on the right with the number 212 473 8974."

13:57 PDT tack_hammer (40.773359 -73.96416): HOT. Whitney Museum, 75th & Madison. This phone is located downstairs, across from the restrooms. It's the one closest to the ladies room.

I'll update this post if/when other NYC Beekeepers chime in Smile

EDIT: Crap. I inadvertently edited this post, when I meant to add another. I think it's mostly restored

bagsbee, you beat me to it. Smile

10:33 curious_girl is not either of the phones on the NW corner of Greene & 4th, across from the Campus Eatery. I was at those on Tuesday and neither phone rang, but the axon did go hot. AFAIK there's no phone at the exact coords, although I'll check around - if there's one inside the NYU bookstore (south side of Washington Pl between Greene & Washington Sq E) it would be right on top of the coords. There's also a single phone near the SW corner of Mercer & 4th, and one or two phones in the lobby of the CS/math building (Warren Weaver/Courant Institute), which is also on that corner. The CS guards are especially inattentive about ID checking, so anyone should be able to get to that one. I'll keep my eyes peeled for other phones hiding inside NYU buildings. Even if the phone is past security, jeremo and I will both have access.

I've started nudging my boyfriend (whose fault it is that I know about ILB in the first place) to get the 14th St phone on Saturday if it's still cold then. If I can weasel out of work early (I finish at 4) I might actually be able to make it myself. Guess we'll see.

Do we know whether either of the Columbia-area phone banks ring? That'd make life a whole lot simpler.

Cursing.

Zero for eight.

Once again I tried for the 8:01 and I couldn't nail it. I'm afraid I really can't try for the axon at 110th street today. One can only take so many 20 minute cigarette breaks before someone will get annoyed.

In summary: I can't help hit any more axons until saturday, so if anyone can get these two uptown between now and then, great. Once the phones are located I can hit them no problem and whenever necessary. On saturday I can coordinate to hit the 8:01, but thats it. the other one is at roughly 4 PM, and I think I'm goin to the final summer party at PS1 that afternoon.

If someone else tries for the 4 PM at 110 street today, good luck.

With regards,

Ian

I'll try Friday

As only one more is needed to make it go hot,
I'll try tomorrow for the code_word one. I will go early and I know some people I can drag into this if needed to cover phones.

Hmmmmm....initially I was going to hit 13:23 (14th St) since I know exactly where it is. But now I'm thinking....we really need 12:57 to unlock the code_word sound file, and since there's so many phones, we'll need as many people as we can get...

OK I'm in for 12:57 code_word. PM me here or on IRC if you wanna swap cell #'s or whatnot to coordinate. Oh, and if anyone knows of any Web Development work in NYC, PM me, I may be out of a job before this thing is through.

One of the phones for Curious_girl 10:37 was in an NYU building, though me and my friend were not sure which one it was. It was very close to the point, though. Also, I've noticed that many of these points are in institutions of learning or knowledge. And now, just a few notes:

The point that is in the NYPL: Is on the 2nd floor near the bathrooms.

Hope to see you guys out there on the next set!

hrm, okay. Do you remember where the building was, what it or the area with the phone looked like, whether you needed ID to get to it? There is (or at least used to be - I haven't actually used it in a while) a bank of phones in the main academic building that would only be 30 or 40 feet from the point. This is gonna kill me 'til I figure it out. Laughing

Looks as though the Sleeping Princess leaked next week's axons in stegged images on the 404 pagel. They're listed in order on this thread over in General/Updates. Skimming through them for NYC-looking coords, here's what we've got:

06:39 40.731895 -073.983688 14th & 1st (map)
07:11 40.733500 -073.995293 Rubin Hall (10th & 5th) (map)
07:23 40.729724 -073.995423 NYU (Greene St) (map)
07:47 40.757145 -073.987240 Times building (43rd & 7th) (map)
08:41 40.958019 -074.069796 north of Paramus (map)
08:55 40.804247 -073.966734 110th & Bway (map)
11:05 40.958019 -074.069796 north of Paramus (map)
11:39 41.152578 -073.424389 New Canaan (map)
11:47 40.752010 -073.981868 NYPL (40th & 5th) (map)
12:49 40.773359 -073.964160 Whitney (70something & Madison) (map)
13:13 40.804247 -073.966734 110th & Bway (repeated!) (map)
13:31 40.807981 -073.963556 116th & Bway (map)

All the times are PDT. Let me know if I've missed any (I probably have, since the New York area spans 40-41 N and -74--73 E (if that makes any sense). I'll edit them in so we have a comprehensive list.

The first thing that's striking me is that there's axons on there that have never been hot. o_O 110th & 116th are both still cold AFAIK, and the 14th St Hivekuts axon isn't hot yet, either. I also don't remember there being axons in New Jersey before either - have there been?

Personally, I'm tickled that the downtown axons are all early. Tuesday is the first day of classes at NYU, and while I might not be able to make any axons that day (I'll have 9:30 class), Wednesday I could potentially get all three. sweeeet.

Yep, it's in the main building, I think. 2 phones to the right inside a building with a revolving door. No ID was necessary... I don't go to NYU, so I don't know what building it was, though.

EDIT: I think I was thinking of the phone in the NYU freshman dorm. Nevermind Very Happy

EDIT AGAIN: I think I've seen everyone in this thread... on 8/29, I was in the NYPL and I was in that NYU freshman dorm.. I was the guy with the Bungie hat on... I was with my friend peter, and my name is Eric... Ring any bells, guys?

Yep, got a pic here. And it was 9/1, not 8/29, but no matter.

Vlamidala, were you the girl at 14th St last week (8/24)? I say "the girl" because there was only one Razz There were a couple of females at the Whitney later that day (which we couldn't make hot because it was closed), were you one of them?

Me and joebrent tried 110th/Broadway again yesterday, no dice. There's just too many phones for two people to cover. The ones we know for sure that it's not:

- SE corner of 110/Bway, one phone in front of D'agostinos
- NE corner (on B'way) next to bus stop, two phones
- NE corner (on 110th) pair of phones, one broken, one missing
- SW Corner, two phones in front of Rite Aid

So the only other options are:

- Pair of phones on B'way about half way up the block from NW corner, betw. 110/111
- inside the 110th St subway station (that's just diabolical, but I could totally see it)
- Any phones inside stores (there may be some inside the Rite Aid or D'agostinos, or others)

Maybe SocialElite can do a little recon and we can do this in a more methodical manner. For now, I give up on that location, It's a real Censored for me to get to.

haha, I figured we were talking about the same forum. Smile

Nope, that wouldn't've been me. I was sick when the links axons went live. It seemed a little silly to drag myself out of the apt to potentially talk on the phone when I couldn't do much more than croak. I've only been to the two Washington Square axons at this point.

I will, however, be the girl at 14th St today, because I'm leaving work in 15 minutes with plenty of time to stake out the phone. Time to resync my cell with atomic time in case the phone hasn't got a ringer...

Well, the good news is that the 14th St phone is right where bagsbee said it would be - at the NW corner of 14th and 1st, next to a bodega. There's no number on the phone, but it comes up on caller ID as 212 529 9138. Takes incoming calls, obviously, and it has a ringer, albeit a quiet one.

The not-so-good news is that the intersection is surprisingly noisy, so the voice recognition didn't pick me up, even though I repeated the Operator's name several times. So, the axon is still cold, but I'll be back tomorrow and Monday if I have to.

no inside phones

Quote:

I was there (I was the girl at the phones by Rite Aid) but I missed bagsbee and joe-- which they haven't let me live down yet and may be why bagsbee didn't mention me in his post. I thought I would just run into them. So I didn't have my phone, or his number, or the stupid coordinates. I was looking for a bagsbee that looked like his avator, but that changes all the time, so I must have been wrong Smile

But, I did check all the stores on both sides of the block of 110th and Broadway. No phones inside -- unless they have something for employees only that they didn't tell me about.

No phones in the subway station either, uptown or downtown.

As for the phones on the west side of Broadway:
I did enlist the assistance of the guy selling books on the street next to the phones in the middle of the block on the west side of broadway. He said the phones had not rung the days he had been there. He agreed to answer it if it rang and say "Melissa" clearly a couple of times. I told him it was an internet game and I had to find the right phone.

I was rooting for him to get it for us. Laughing

I'm actually more disturbed by your answering machine message than anything else. It's a little off-putting to hear Christopher Walken circa-Deerhunter say, "Hello...(long pause) This is Susan."
