Well I can't give a blow by blow (memory's not that good) but it's seriously just a tandard 2 minute trailer save that it was 3d and really really big Razz. The 3d was definitely quality, but the first half in the 'real world' was 2d (likely to wow you when they jump to 3d).

I seriously think there's going to be a lot of backlash about this. In the Toronto show at least, there was nothing connecting the screening to the marketing campaign, except for getting the tshirt swag, and general consensus of the crowd leaving was WTF?! That's it?! People were chuckling because one guy bought a huge jug of popcorn.

On leaving, I made an attempt to see if I could perhaps grab the movie poster, but a guy (maybe the marketing director, dunno) grabbed it; I chased him down and asked he said it's Disney's property and can't be given away.

So really, aside from the shirt, everything at this event will be generally accessible in likely a very short order.

I'm generally pretty forgiving, but I can definitely understand the sentiments of failure for this event. I mean, even if there was at least SOME connection to flynnlives.com or a mystery or hint or something to get all these non-players involved and following, it would have merit to be considered a MUCH bigger success.

As it stands, most of the people have no idea what's going on (friends, foafs, last minute cherry pickers, etc), so huge marketbase lost, judging by the general exit sentiments... Sad

I tried to tell my other friends to keep in touch with the bigger picture, but one was very clear that this pretty much turned him off from stuff like this.

guh.

Cool trailer though.

Anyone tried using a blacklight on their shirts from the event?

Mixed reports are coming in from multiple sources on Twitter. Either "really liked" or "so so". I think most people are upset that it was ONLY a trailer and they got some T-shirts.

As a result, some refer to it as a "Disney marketing fail" mostly because of the organization of the event or the fact that it seemed disjoint to the VM campaign, not for the actual content.

People, you're setting your expectations too high, I think. Razz

I suspected as much with this when they chose the locations they did. It smacked of being run by the movie folk instead of the game folk. Kinda interesting.

BTW, do you have any new achievements on your account for actually attending the preview? Were they taking the tickets you printed out or just checking them?

No joy. Still have my ticket, it was just a quick I'd glance to get in. At least the tech retrieval process was much smoother this time than with TDK's preview.

And yeah, I really believe it was Disney that decided -what- to show. But even so, there was no connection to flynnlives there, no draw to keep people interested in the grander experience. Just an overhyped 2 minute trailer, with generally higher expectations because of rumours and connections with TDK's campaign. Kind of like the iPad PR backfire? Razz

Remaining tight-lipped is nice, but if your target overhypes, they won't point the finger at anyone but you.

I won't be able to check the shirt with blacklight until tonight, so hoping someone else reports on that shortly...

That's what makes me think that Disney is micro-managing what 42E is doing/allowed to do.

I've read through several sites' descriptions of TDK and while it may be early, yes, there is a fine line between "ambiguous" and "clue worthy". So maybe the entire ARG is being reined in and kept on a short leash by Disney?

That'd be pretty fail.

That's actually what kept me from registering after Comicon. It didn't have the feel of a full ARG like The Beast or I Love Bees. I thought they were just targeting things at locations. I still wonder if someday, 42 will show some designs of what they wanted to do vs. what they were able to.

I went to an event for Transformers 2 which included the new trailer and a re-screening of the original Transformers. Even though there wasn't an ARG wrapped around it, the event wasn't run by Paramount. There wasn't even a Paramount representative on site. It was all done through a local event company.

My guess would be that there was very little, if any, 42E presence at these events. And if there was a Disney presence, it was probably not organizational or management.

Props to thebruce for making the parallel with the iPad launch.

So just to clarify... Because some people had build the Pit Cell event to be the be-all and end-all of experiences, yet they were shown only a FREE 2-minute movie trailer in IMAX 3D before the rest of the world could see it, the event was a complete failure since it didn't live up to their self-created hype?

THESE are the people who are gonna ruin the game for me, not Disney and not 42E... *sigh*

// end rant

Let's hope that there's another piece of the puzzle released next week (possibly Tuesday?) that will unlock the trailer for the rest of us. I need my fix!

Back home with my shirt in tow. So glad I decided to go. Got in on an absentee +1 and it was also my first IMAX/IMAX 3D experience. No wonder people love it. ^_^ Tron my take my IMAX virginity if a summer blockbuster doesn't beat it to the punch.
