Mystery Google
A new way to get rabbit holes out there?

I recently discovered a site called Mystery Google.

http://www.mysterygoogle.com

It's twist is that when you type in what you want to search for, and hit search, you get the results for what the last person searched for. Now the caveat is that you can type anything you want into the search box, and when the person after you sees the results page, they also see exactly what you typed into the search box.

This could be interesting if used for a trailhead/rabbit hole, with the corect combination of keywords to bring your desired site to the top of the results list, or to drop an email address or phone number on a completely random person.

I spent most of my day at work playing with this. I even went as far as typing "Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to participate in a scavenger hunt. Accept your mission by texting the codephrase swedish fish to (myphonenumber.)" After submitting this a few times to mystery google, I got a text message from a random person. They photographed and sent to me: a mouse, a dog wearing a red cape, and a hand-drawn comic. I also tried another tactic where I gave my number and asked to be called and sang to. After about 10 minutes I got a voicemail of a group of girls singing the Meow-Mix commercial jingle.

My point is that the people who choose to participate are more than willing to play along, and thus it seems a viable option to get a trailhead/rabbit hole out there, or even to come up with short, quick-play scenarios that can take place via texting, a few phone calls, and maybe even email.

I've decided I'm going to spend my weekend devising a worthwhile game I can play with the next person I can get to accept my mission via Mystery Google.

ARGH I'm totally addicted to this now... connected to two people I've never met through them putting emails on there... it's neat seeing what people type to the next person.

Apparently everyone else is too. It seems the site is malfunctioning. Just as I was getting ready to send out a puzzletrail too. Crap.

Yeah this is pretty cool, it would definitely be a good way to get a trailheal out to the masses a bit more, especially since the idea of "missions" is already widespread on the site. Obviously, so far its just "send a picture of this to this email" or whatever, but if you made it look simple so they weren't put off, and draw them into the ARG experience.

On a related note, my damned creative side keeps nagging me "make an ARG, go on, do it, make one, go on" Razz but I've not even played one all the way through yet! However if I ever did, this is something I might use.

Ah, lawyers (I bet)
