[RUMOR][SPEC] Portal

WARNING: WILL LIKELY BE SPOILERS FOR PORTAL AHEAD. READ AT YOUR OWN RISK.

So Steam released a new patch for Portal today. The only description of it is:

"Changed radio transmission frequency to comply with federal and state spectrum management regulations."

Now, according to this video and a thread in the Steam forums , the small radio in each of the rooms in Portal will "spit out bits of Morse code" when you do something to it. If you get all 26 snippets of Morse code, you get the acheivement.

I don't think anyone's gotten the full achievement yet, but some of the morse code snippets so far include
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
nterior transmission active

External data line active

Message digest active

The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog

System data dump active

User back up active

Password back up active

Beep beep beep beep lol

Sounds like GLaDOS is most definitely Still Alive...and possibly rebooting?

Definitely seems like something, has anyone played through the game fully since the update, I would but my game's all laggy and frankly I'm stuck with the companion cube Razz but there may be more clues

Saw this, and I'm so in.

Valve never ceases to amaze me.

Also, someone on the steam forums is posting all these pics. They seem to be getting the pics from the morse code some how.

Some of the audio files are actually slow scan television code. Current puzzle: One of the files points toward a number. Calling the number yields a data line. People have dialed into it and confirmed its a BBS, asking for a GLaDOS username and PW. Here's a picture of the terminal:

The fine folks at SomethingAwful are doing some good work on this one - there are a few username/PW combinations that are worth trying from the game. If you find the number from the steam forums, and just want to try stuff at random, please resist the temptation. The number is getting really clogged, with plenty of busy signals and dropped connections. If you have an idea, make sure it hasn't been tried yet.

I'm vaguely surprised that uF is behind SA of all places, but actual video games aren't really what this place is about. Smile

wow. well done valve. I'm soooo happy to see arg-ish puzzles associated with Valve. it's my two favorite things!

If you want to play it, go play now if you have the game. I doubt it would be possible to find some of what follows in the game itself without extracting files.

So, to update...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The images are embedded in sounds in much the way that the Presence was embedded in sounds in the NIN Year Zero arg.

This is a pretty comprehensive compilation of the images
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1169218

And as to what they mean...

This next part is REALLY A SPOILER! if you want to try and solve it yourself, look at the spoiler above!
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

Holy crap, they go to a BBS in the Seattle area.

here's the info from the steam site:

!!!

Supposedly if you connect using a modem and bbs software, it asks for a GlaDOS password.

As far as I know, the password has not been found yet.

Well now, guess I'll have to re-install Portal then. Smile

ETA:

According to the Portal site, there is a NEW achievement that nobody, or very few people anyway (it's at 0%) has received yet:

Transmission Received
..?

yep, definitely watching...
I checked the app store for modem apps, but I don't think that's possible currently with the iphone. Which sucks, because it would be great to use the phone to connect to BBS's Smile
Unfortunately my PC is out of commission, and it's a lot of effort to dig out an old modem and install the right software, and get the modem settings right to connect to the BBS... bah.
So, watching =)

Can't say as I'd seen SSTV before - have to keep that trick in mind in the future. And yeah, time to fire up Portal again.

I'm back in the ARG business! Smile

Unless the BBS uses ANSI (And even then), Windows' HyperTerminal Comm program usually works to connect.

According to Neogaf, looks like the BBS login/password combo is backup/backup.
