I was trying to backsolve from
in New York State, She's frequently a lady, and my whole.
being Lady Liberty (the statue)

L(lib?) + bird + tea?

Roman numeral L fits, but it needs a Lee or Lih sound

the fertile source of song,
would work for bird, but then they give you bird.
not the poet's lay might be pointing to a meadow (lea)

addicted to the bowl In Massachusetts
for the Boston Tea Party? Eat a bowl of tea?

Thanks, cather.
Your bowl of tea made me think of a bowl of sugar.
Something an ant (a worker who lives in a hill) would enjoy.
Which fits with the "Massachusetts" vs: "New York State" part if you think "Ont" and "Ant", respectively, for 'Aunt'.

Poets of the day were like singers, directors and actors, today. A lot was expected of some and if they didn't deliver, (they laid an egg) there could be significant consequences.

So:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
l+egg+ant = ELEGANT

I think the lay is just a pun on lay meaning a lyric poem (see definition 4 here ) and what a hen does to an egg.

The "less than 4 feet" meaning of ell is explained
here .

Fantastic Rogi.
She is that....

(And now I know what the 'ell is.)

number V

According to the coded answer, Rogi is correct!
I edited the following charade to add the stanza I left out!!! Sorry!!!!

Here's the next, again, in this one, every other line is indented throughout the stanzas. PS This one seems difficult to me.

There's something queer about
The girl I love and seek to win;
I wish that I could find her out,
Perhaps I have been taken in.

To doubt the lady were a sin,
Sincerely though, I've come to doubt
She ever meant to let me in,
Because I always find her out.

I asked to be allowed to call,
And modestly she gave consent;
Now servants tell me in the hall
She's not my first, she came and went.

Inconsistent as the scented gale
That from my second idly blows,
Elusive as a phantom pale,
I only know she comes and goes.

Though hope may counsel still my third,
Eternal hope that smiles at dawn,
My heart is sick with hope deferred
To hear again she's been and gone.

I'd seek it at the frozen pole,
Chimeras fight and Gorgons rout,
I'd brave the fire of my whole,
If she were in and not put out.

an interlude

I didn't want to confuse this post with the latest charade; forgive me for a double post. I found out that there are 5 volumes of 100 charades each. I found the other four online and will be looking for them to buy. At any rate, we will have a great supply of these charades to work our way through at a luxurious pace. I'm having fun with it and I think this can be a fun addition to the timewaster section. We can never have enough riddles and these are so cleverly, well written, even if the difficulty of the puzzles vary.

I think we all appreciate how difficult it is to make good puzzles. I'm also thinking of a way to make these into a game to be played at the Come Out and Play festival...an old-fashioned addition to the games. Ideas for use of these riddles in a game would be welcomed.

When I was lamenting "typical" riddles, ealier, I failed to mention an aspect that seems to generally spell fail. That is providing TOO many repetitive clues that point to the same thing. You see it a lot on puzzle trails when the author or folks that have solved a part try to help others out with additional clues. It just seems to confuse as often as it helps. This one is a little like that. The only thing that comes to mind is a swing (what with all the coming and going). Maybe something about a cloud for the 2nd part as a source of the idle blow?

On the off chance there was a typo or something, I looked at the .pdf version and see that there is a verse missing at the end. Not that it helps Wink.

Adding it here so Rose can copypaste it. (Feel free to use the NBSPs, too)

I'd seek it at the frozen pole,
 Chimeras fight and Gorgons rout,
I'd brave the fire of my whole,
 If she were in and not put out.

Yeah, lots of smoke in this one.
With the mention of the poles, and maybe northern lights, I'll guess the wind is from the "N" or maybe "No".

I can give a hint in the number of letters used in the answer if that helps...or give a choice of the first letter. Let me know. I haven't looked at the key yet.

Rogi: what is NBSP?

I wondered if the in and out had to do with the sun rising and setting or maybe clouds? On a cloudy day the sun goes in and comes out...

There is something about
I'd brave the fire of my whole

from the stanza I accidentally omitted ( I know exactly how and why that happened and it won't happen again) that made me think of the sun as well

hey working from the idea it could be sun...I thought the second could be ewe from those scented lambs that Marie Antoinette,wife of the sun king, used to play shepardess with at Versailles. Just a thought and very silly one now that I rethink it...

my other idea has to do with the northern lights as mentioned above by booba..some sort of natural phenomenon...something outside that never comes 'in."

And now I'll stop guessing and leave it to the experts.

OK, she's not (x) 'cause she's out, So the first is "in"

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Inconsistent, scented gale, idly blows = fan?

If you add in a "tree" somehow, it makes a word, but not a lot of sense .

Eta and to spoiler, it just could be right.

Hope may counsel to "try"

I'd brave the (gun)fire of my whole.

Infantry? But whats with all the in and out stuff??

Holy Cow that answer is correct! I have no idea how you derived that even though you explained it. I need to think about it for a while.
Rogi: please explain to me how to set up the indentation correctly. I'm never ashamed to admit I don't know how to do something (even if everyone else does know.) Again, every other line indents.

Here is number VI

My first bedeck the lawn
When the moon is shining bright;
My second ends the dawn,
Beginning every night;
My third and fourth is done
To hide a thing from sight;
My whole's the name of one
Whom we can't remember quite.

Good job, booba!
I'm with Rose on that one. Right over my head. I still don't get it.

I'll have to think on this next one a bit, though I'd bet the first is "dew".
Should we be spoilering if'n we really aren't positive?

For the Non Breaking SPace, Rose, you could just copy it from the beginning of
 this line (It's in there, I promise) and hit "paste" on the beginning of each line where you need it. Here's another one just for fun >>> <<<.
The forum converts it to a vanilla "space" character.
If you're using Windows and a proper keyboard (Not a laptop), you can key one in by holding down [Alt] and keying 0160.

You can also copy it from Windows' "Character Map" tool (charmap.exe).
It's the blank one between the tilde (~) and the inverted exclamation mark (¡).

ETA: Okay... I think I got it:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The 3rd and 4th would imply a single, 2-syllable word.
One that came to mind was "bury"
Since the 2nd has to have some kind of a "sound", the whole becomes "dew" + ? + "bury". One of my favorite cars of all-time is a Deusenberg so "sun" came to mind for the 2nd. And fits the clue when you finally warp your brain around it. So, I guess "Deusenberry" (Which is someone I never heard of and makes the last bit true Wink ). Could be Deusenbery, Deusenbury, Dusenberry, Dusenbery or Dusenbury, also.

That looks correct as to the last spelling according to the key, if I did it correctly...Well done!!! And thanks Rogi!! Perfect timing as the spacing on the next two is different; I've no idea if it matters (other than for the rhyme of the poem.)

Here is the next one:

      VII

No longer for the Roman dame
   My second from my first is brought;
   Where once the Roman legions fought
No terror has the Roman name;
My whole is master of the soil,
And reaps in peace the fruits of toil.

That answer looks right, but booba could you please explain how it fits with the charade? I'm so rubbish at solving these.

Here's the next one; my favorite so far, just on literary merit.

    VIII

A product of coniferous trees,
A hardy toiler of the seas;
These make when joined and matched,
   A Russian scratched.

I make this statement wholly on
The authority of Napoleon.
