[QUESTION] What if Durga was a serial killer?

Please notice that's not a SPEC. I do not think Durga is a serial killer.

I was just wondering, what if we looked at all of the axon characters like victims. I mean, Durga is stalking them. She's getting into their personal lives. She's in control of the whole shebang so ... why them?

If this was like CSI or Law & Order we'd be looking for:

a motive
what connects them all
how Durga could profit from it all

We have:
Our suspect, Durga
The son of an ONI intelligence officer
Perhaps that very officer

A genetically engineered teenage girl
Her dad/guardian
A "stupid" cop
The guy cop kills

A med student who hacks on the side
his friend
An immigrations smuggler
his girlfriend

Connections?
We know Jersey knows Jan.

*scratches head*

with so many open ended possibilites, this is possible. But I don't get this as a gut feeling. Guess we will just need to piece it together more ^_^

Re: [QUESTION] What if Durga was a serial killer?

Ha ha DM Smile

Ok, I'll give it a shot.

a motive
It's not her motive, it's Flea's. Flea wants information to help the Covenant.

what connects them all
They all provide specific examples of what to expect from Earth.

how Durga could profit from it all
She won't, Flea will probably delete her when it's all done.

We have:

The son of an ONI intelligence officer
Perhaps that very officer

The Covenant know Earth is heavily guarded and they want to know if there are ways to subvert that. They might also be looking for the artifact, and if Morelli = Castaway, he might have info.

A genetically engineered teenage girl
Her dad/guardian

Let's face it, the SPARTAN program hasn't been kind to the Covies. They want to know if there are any hanging around here on Earth.

A med student who hacks on the side
his friend
An immigrations smuggler
his girlfriend

This one is harder. Maybe knowing about immigration will help the Covenant chart a method to Earth, knowing travel routes, etc. It might help them estimate population density and know what cities to strike first.

Connections?
None, they make up a large picture for the Covenant battle plan.

I'm definitely down with the idea of her gathering info, but I'm not sure I buy it being for the Covenant.

I get the impression that they basically just want to find Earth so they can melt it. Knowing a little about the (not so) mundane activities of a few humans probably isn't going to help them accomplish that.

Motive
Durga is following what instincts and fragments of memories she has left to remember her purpose.
What connects them all
Something Durga knows, but we do not. Possibly each character has an individual trait that reminds Durga of herself. Jan's power and intelligence, Kamal's expertise in tracking, and stupid_cops retribution.
What Durga would gain
An answer to who she is, and what she is doing on Jersey's computer.

heh. Now I'm officially interested in hearing the next part of the stories.

A little spec:
Durga: secret ONI Spy AI project
Jan: secret ONI? human enhancement program
Kamal: medical student who justmaybe could make sense of both the axons and programming of an AI

My first line of thought is that the Castaway sent a copy of Melissa to his son, a damaged copy which got named Durga, same as others have spec'd. My second thought was that Durga escaped from ONI - or was sent in search of Jan - and from there caught up to the Castaway, but that doesn't make as much sense as Melissa was commisioned with her ship, presumably. The third thought is Melissa got a copy of herself away to Earth's net after the "crash", or through regular interfaces after entering lunar orbit and docking.

Maybe Durga turned up the dirt on Jan initially at Jersey's request, but then continued to turn up more as it became interesting. That was her motive, but eventually the stories will probably interconnect - especially if Jersey tries to come to her rescue, or something macho like that.

Durga's pursuit of Kamal, however, is driven by motives she herself is prevented from analyzing. So I can only spec medical-student-hackers are useful to an AI that doesn't want to return to ONI for repair.

So it seems that for our serial killer analogy ... Durga is something of a Manchurian Candidate? Compelled to follow a task, unable to know why?

I agree with what Astald said here for the most part. But one thing is, how does Durga not know her purpose? I thought the only problem she really had was with seeing herself (or a reflection). She never asked what she was doing there at Jersey's computer, she only stated that she was getting rid of the bee (Jeannie) who tried to sting her, and pretty much took over from there.

Durga: I like to find things. I think I like to find things out.
Jersey: What kind of things?
Durga: I don't know. I can't remember.

That was all I was going off of for her not remembering her purpose.

So if we go with a Manchurian Candidate analysis the question is -

Who is pulling the strings? Why?

Flea to me still seems like the likely choice. Or an Infested Melissa. I could, I guess, see that it's simply ONI programming in case she was kidnapped, but that seems tenuous to me. It doesn't seem like Durga is supposed to fall into enemy hands (survive evade resist escape or whatever) and that such tactics would fail in the long run.
