Fairfax sitrep

Edison Carter, live and direct from some parking lot in Fairfax...

Well, I pounded the pavement out in Fairfax to try to catch the 1355 tack_hammer call. No joy, but I've narrowed the field a bit.

After a false start with some loser's decimal degrees to degrees-minutes-seconds calculator, I found the FCC's coordinate converter on the web and landed back in the area Edify_yo had originally identified. (I'm big enough to admit when I'm a bonehead.)

With both the car GPS and the handheld GPS agreeing, I couldn't find anything right at the specified spot, but discovered payphone heaven at Woodson HS. There were at least 4 in front of the school, but they give a "not in service for incoming calls" intercept. (I tried 2, but I expect they're all that way in some misguided effort to protect America's youth from something or other.)

As 4:55 came and went, I looked across the street and noticed that I could see the Westmost "Fair City Mall" sign from the Woodson parking lot.

I think the best contender is the payphone in the foyer of Jerry's Pizza and Subs in Fair City Mall. It's on the Westernmost tip of the mall's lot. The ringer works. I have pictures and can post them if anyone is interested.

I also walked over to the Wendy's in the middle of the parking lot. The ringer on that phone is muted. If you listen really closely when you call it, you can hear the striker hitting, but the bell is muted.

I walked into the lot a little more, and the next closest phone (by Ross and Car Trenz) is not in service for incoming calls.

I think Jerry's our man...

NEW AXONS!!!

Found embedded in the killer.jpg files (w00t to the guys who pulled them out); plus two new ones from the SP at recipe3.html, not in our area.

Oliver did indeed get an axon today about the time the new axons were found, so the round 2 axons may be valid for a couple days more, but watch the site for news.

We think the hivekuts axons will be good a little longer (probably even until Tuesday) since two sound clips haven't been gotten yet. People have been getting axons all day (we're up to 303 total!), but beware.

I suppose it's also possible all of them are live now. edit - consensus suggests no, probably not till Tuesday
I am attaching the new list for DC/VA. Mostly old ones, thank heavens, a couple new downtown still including a couple we haven't been able to find. (They finally gave up on Potomac Mills Mall).

Peach highlighting means we haven't found it (either because it is new or we can't find our a...; I mean Melissa hasn't given us very clear coordinates)

Fair City Plaza (whatever), you are still up.

Manassas, NOT gone. (I missed it or it was a late find after I updated friday.)

Whoever mentioned Petersburg, I'm not looking that far south but there's definitely a few Richmond area ones again (midlothian etc) and Hampton/Norfolk. And one "south of Petersburg" some ways.

I'll get the 7:03 at Georgetown Theatre tomorrow...that's a 3 min bike ride from where I live. And hey, I can see Paparazzi too finally! Anyways, I have to get a blazer for school tomorrow, so I don't think I can get the 10:35 and 11:01, but I'll try and get over there if I can...others should go as well.

You guys are awesome for putting all of these charts together, thanks aliendial and chappy!

First things first, the 17:03 is mislabeled, it should list local time as 8:03 (17 - 12 = 5 + 3 = 8).

Second, the guess is they are next week's coordinates (this allows us to plan them out before hand). It wouldn't hurt to hit up one of the sites at the known time, but I think it's gonna be next week's.

I think kaziel is right - the new ones probably aren't hot yet. But Tuesday morning that one is yours, kakashi!

And I'll go edit the chart kaziel, thanks for the eagle eye there. edit - I'll get that Monday. I have only a truncated spreadsheet program at home and it'll kill all the links if I reload from here.

Re the National Gallery of Art:

If the coordinates are for the address, we'll never cover all the phones. The Gallery has 2 buildings. On payphone-project.com I see 3-4 locations inside the West building, plus two outside. The East building has at least 3 more inside. And that's if you accept that the payphone site is complete. And most of these locations have multiple phones. Confused

Union Station presents similar problems. It's a train station, for heaven's sake, PLUS a mall! Kaziel found three sets of phones. I'm willing to bet there are many more if you consider the entire facility. So unless there are phones right at the exact coordinates, forget it! Note that this corner of the building has a two level restaurant - if there were payphones upstairs there, we might miss them too...

So even though these are both on the list again this week they remain a low-likelihood "get".

OK. I thought kakashi117 was going to hot a couple Saturday, but when he didn't I decided to spend a little time downtown. I did four -- found the ones at 14th & P, and 12th &D (really 12&C west side)(both as kaziel specced they might be), then the one in front of Agriculture and at the Smithsonian metro.

Not done - for anyone bored today - 14th & Constitution, SW corner 10:35 PDT.

Not tried because too many possibilities - the National Gallery (chappy is right there is a tempting outside phone on the corner of 6th & Constitution), and Union Station. Sadly, we get another chance at those starting Tuesday.

Will update my chart from the office. nb: I had the wrong axon marked as Smithsonian metro, will include in my update.

edit - I have some extra time, so here's the color commentary.

14th&P - it was the other phone spotted by kaziel, about 100 ft west of the corner on the south side, in front of a barber shop. Now this is a neighborhood in rebirth. Too few years ago it was hookers galore and poor residents. Now there's a great Whole Foods Market on the block, new condos across the street, a blues club in a renovated 2 story building. Studio Theater is no longer the only civilization in the 'hood. (I had a lovely freshly made strawberry lemonade and a pecan bun at the market while I waited.)

But. There are still some older buildings not sold/not renovated, such as the set of three that includes the barber shop. Upstairs is residential, and cooled by a window unit right over the phone. So as I'm inspecting the phone, I'm wondering why this little area seems so damp and dank. I realized the air conditioner ensures that this little patch is never quite dry. And occasionally a big drip hits the top of the kiosk and surprises you with a splash. In the face. Stand to the side when using the phone...But yes, it was THE phone. (PS don't try to use the phone yourself. The "official" number didin't work so I fed it 50 cents to call me, but after I dialed it asked for 50 cents more. And the coin return knob is broken. Fortunately no cash needed to receive the call.) [deleted gratuitous DC real estate commentary about how long this neighborhood has been in rebirth]

12th & almost D - as kaziel spec'ed, this is indeed the other phone at 12th& C, a little in from the NW corner in a bland kiosk (the other one is in a verizon kiosk right on the NE corner). (Both are on the list for next week.)

Between 12th & 14th on Jefferson Drive - your basic Verizon double kiosk on the edge of the Mall. West phone.

Corner of 12th & Independence - Inside the metro station, left-hand phone.

Ack. Lot's of new stuff, and I'm buried at work after taking the red eye this morning. Great job this weekend, Aliendial! I won't have the reference page fixed in time for hunting today, but I'll get it done tonight. I did get an updated version posted while I was away, but it's still listing the hivekuts times. Let me know if the layout is better/easier, or if I should take another pass Smile

I'll hit the building museum axon tonight at 4:51 EST, and the Ballston metro axon tonight at 5:57 EST. I'll get the Federal Center axon tomorrow at 1:11 EST, and time permitting I'll try the National Gallery of Art again on my way back (1:51 EST). Kakashi117, I can get the 8:03 (note the time, it's not 7:03) call in Georgetown Thursday if you don't get it today or tomorrow.

Does anyone know what the question will be this round?

Sorry - I fixed the time of the Georgetown Theater axon.

Have at it, gang!

Chappy yer a monster.

Note we have real good location data for almost every one. This should be a breeze except for the part about getting time to get to the axons. I may have a little time today or tomorrow but am out of town Thursday.

So anyone who is interested, check the axons in the morning to see if someone got them the day before, and then get out there!

New Beekeper

Hey all. I just found this forum AFTER spending all morning hunting axons (3 for 3, but the Reference Page would have saved me a lot of time and angst)

I got these three:

zip_your_shirt
6:31 PDT 38.890469 -077.026000 (Madison Dr. NW bt 9th & 12th) 202-789-9517

Not too hard to find, but it's "No Parking" and heavily patrolled until 10:00am EDT so I had to drive off and hoof it back.

insurrection
6:59 PDT 38.903250 -077.033133
(E side Vermont Ave NW bt K and L) 202-393-8754

Found street parking easily. Standard double kiosk right on the street.

taxes_suck 7:21 PDT 38.885250 -077.028167
(NW corner 12th St & C St SW) 202-488-9580

This one confused me b/c the coordiantes weren't quite right. I took a gamble that the target phone was on the NW corner (there's another on on the other corner that works even though it looks busted) and it paid off. This one is on the corner of the Dept. of Ag. near a hot dog vendor.

I won't be able to tag any others today or tomorrow but could probably help out on Thursday after 11:00am EST.

Great, Mike! The one across the street at 12th & C is also valid, but for a different axon. Go figure. Great to have some more help, esp. as kaziel the wonder-biker has availability issues this week!

I can get the one at Connecticut and K again (12:39 PDT)
I'll leave Washington Harbor for kakashi117.
I may try a swing at several of the mall ones this afternoon. I'll post results tonight!

Be sure to check back before you head out - I'll try and keep my index up to date but the best way to check is to get the list of times and run by the fable.html page before you leave...

Actually, after double-checking, there's a good chance I can grab the 11:41 "would_that_help" on Lee Highway, tomorrow afternoon. That one would make 5/5 for that clue.

UPDATE: I just drove by there on my way home. That plaza has three banks of phones, which two people could probably cover but one person would have to leave one open. Anyone want to try it with me this week?

Sorry guys, I can't get to the Washinton Harbor one until this Saturday at the earliest...my school doesn't get out until 6 PM every day. But I plan on getting the 8 O'Clock one at Georgetown Cineplex tonight at 8:03. If anyone can tell me what the new question and answer is, that would be great. Thanks.

And sorry aliendial, I thought I had said for other people to go after those two, since I didn' think I would be able to make it...I had to get school clothes and supplies. Well, keep up the awesome work guys!

New question is: what ship are you assigned to?

New answer: Apocalypso
