The Clock Without a Face
Forthcoming McSweeney's Treasure-Hunt-ARG? Sign Me Up!

From www.gustwintig.com/:
Quote:

I suppose you all have heard the news already -- otherwise you wouldn't be here. The rumors are true:

The Emerald Khroniker has been stolen from the penthouse of Ternky Tower.

We have reason to believe that the twelve jeweled numbers have been stashed across the country.

My employer, the detective Roy Dodge, is...off the case.

I have compiled extensive notes and sketches of all thirteen floors of the Tower, along with portraits of the residents. These case files have been collected into a single volume, titled THE CLOCK WITHOUT A FACE, which is being printed this very week; my hope is that amateur sleuths and aspiring treasure-hunters will use the clues and information within to recover the emeralds. (This website is just a small sample of the evidence revealed in the actual book.)

I am merely a note-taker, scene-sketcher, and confidential assistant — I am no detective...but maybe you are! I am counting on you, you good people: claim the loot before the villains do.

I'll update this site as clues appear and jewels are (hopefully) found. Please check back often, and contact gustwintigSPLATgmail.com with any questions or tips.

The mentioned book doesn't come out until May, but due to a fairly loose curtain, it appears that there's already some info emerging: There's a Twitter feed that's amassed quite a few posts for a game that hasn't even started yet, Website with info news etc., and it appears that additional clues will be revealed at bookstores and tour events after the book's release.

This looks pretty exciting. From the look of the Twitter, it's definitely got that McSweeney's flair to it. And I miss the good ol' armchair plot-based treasure-hunt.

EDIT: Also this YouTube video.

Interesting... looks like another armchair hunt.

The website has a series of buildings across the bottom... I imagine they are clues to the cities where the numbers are. One is clearly the US Capitol, so DC is likely a location. Any of the others immediately familiar to anyone?

Also Google turned up this review:

The Clock Without a Face

In the picture for resident #6, Bert D'Grnp, mime, there are 3 pictures on the wall which I believe are a rebus for "Ohio" ("Oh" + "hi" + "oh").

Update from the blog (http://gustwintig.com/news/2010/4/7/the-time-is-soon.html)

Looks like there are going to be events in LA, San Fran, Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York, which he's going to give updates about earlier.

He's also asking for questions to be sent to him at gustwintigSPLATgmail.com for him to answer.

I thought I might try my hand at setting up a Wiki. It's in its infancy, but I plan to keep at it.

Looks good - I've also been following the forum at hitcontests.com as it seems the most active on this to date

Or it could be 0-5-0. The wallpaper in the room with the checkerboard(?), has roman numerals XLV(45) in it.

Also in chapter five, the two old ladies are trying to solve a puzzle, "We've got the state and the mile, but can't seem to figure out the highway." I suppose this could be a kloo as to how the numbers were hidden: state, highway, and mile marker, or could be a red herring.

Roy Dodge says the apartments are the key to where the numbers are hidden. I haven't checked any of this out, but could some shapes of the rooms match state shapes/outlines.

The resident of the Ninth Floor, Munari Bakula, appears to be a combo of two people: Munari Bruno a futurist, and Scott Bakula who starred in Quantum Leap(?).

Regarding floor 6, if the pictures rebus out to "Ohio", and the roman numerals are 45, then that could be pointing to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ohio_State_Route_45. If we count the number of checkboard tiles on the floor (why isn't it a traditional square?) we get 68 - on mile 67.45 of Route 45, it intersects with http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_Route_87_(Ohio). Maybe a crossroads dig site? [EDIT:] And there is a US Route 68 that runs through Ohio, but I am unable to find anything that correlates to 45 - I couldn't find any landmarks that correlate to mile 45.

[EDIT2] Whoops. I counted wrong. There are 76 squares, not 68.

So, to followup again: if we accept that it's Ohio, then we have 45 (the Roman numerals) and 76 tiles. There are state routes for both 45 and 76, and the only place they appear to meet is... ... a cemetery. This seems promising. Here's a link to the North Jackson Cemetery on Google Maps.

Gus has posted his list of stops through the end of June:

http://gustwintig.com/news/2010/4/20/recruitment-tour-underway.html

I'm near NONE of them - can we get folks to claim an event?

For those heading to Ohio to check out that potential digsite, Gus is saying they should be clearly marked:
