paraphrase of "domestic_skills"

San Francisco 13:29 axon "domestic_skills" is hot, but I don't think the audio file is yet. Here is somewhat of a synopsis of what happened (I didn't have any audio recording devices with me at the time)

Story Arc: Janissary James + J^2
Setting: Kitchen/dinner table

It begins with talk about Jan being defensive about her cooking skills and mentions something about a food replicator being able to do the same job. (not too sure about the EXACT wording of that phrase)
It appears that dinner is over and everyone has gotten up to do the dishes.
Jan says she already told some people (her friends?) that she was going to go out with them that night. J^2 doesn't want her to go, and says, what sounds like "I want you to stay close to base."
There is woman named Gladis (sp?) that apparently had dinner with them too. Gladis has a sort of harsh southern accent. It's not soft and refined. It seems that Jan doesn't like her, but there is nothing specific said (just tone of her voice). There is some clatter of dishes, while Jan protests, but J^2 maintains firm in his position. Then Gladis mentions someting about watching sports.

[SPEC]
My feelings: Overall, it felt like the old, "my parents are divorced/separated/one of them out of the picture, and now my dad is dating some new woman, and she's not my mom, so I hate her". Jan sounds more like a teenage brat whining to her dad about not letting her go hang out with her friends.
[/SPEC]

SPEC away!

RD

Just listened to run_for_cover (14:29). The phone was at the intersection of two major downtown arterials so it was really hard to hear, but it sounds like it comes sometime after skin. It's the guy talking about how to hit the balls, I think--not too hard, not too soft, but just right. (Sounds like they are playing pool?) I listened twice but could never make out what Jan (I think) was saying.
So Jan talks to some shady guy and makes a bet that probably involves beating him at pool? What're the odds right now on J^2 having to come save the day? Confused

On another note, I'm wondering how much more story we'll get from this. There are plenty of axons in this group, but I think we'll still be a few dozen shy of 777, even if we get all of them. Do we have enough axons in total to make this the last round of audio clips?

Oh right ... though it continued on Reach, not Earth. So perhaps Kamal's sister is an S-II, but then she is certainly not Jan (which we don't have much else to suggest she is).

Here's a weak summary of something_i_carry (17:11 Redmond, WA). Very loosely paraphrased.

Sophia and a male (I dont know who) are talking.
Sophia: ...and you felt...
Male: guilty
Male starts to make a joke about a dog..
Sophia: don't
Male: dont what?
Sophia: don't joke about that, you dont need to do that with me.
Male: ok fine
Sophia: let me ask you one question.
Male: yeah?
Sophia: When did you decide to become a doctor?
Male: oh I dunno, it just seemed like a good thing to...
Sophia: ...yeah...
<wind down?>

drink_special

sounds like a recording, low quality, like its outdoors or in a crowded bar:

[muffled conversations, possible sounds of pool balls clacking]
don-corleone voice: come on over! free lunch on [me]
new york accent [woman?]: aint happenin pal! ain't happenin!
[more muffled sound]

[clear now]
Jan: reality huh? thanks uncle [Otto], hey! nobody told me it was dime-store [bowling] night, is there a drink special or somethin'?

really odd

I don't see a transcript for Kiss yet, so here it is, straight from the phone:

[short wind up]
*background noise of rain, thunder and cars passing*

Sofia: *chuckle* Thanks for dinner, Kamal, and next time you want chicken, you buy it and call me and I'll come over and cook it for you.
Kamal: Deal. Ah... your hair's getting wet. In fact, you're...getting wet.
Sofia: *laughing* It feels good. Dinner was great. It was great being with someone from home.
Kamal: Aiden will never understand you the way I do.
Sofia: Aiden doesn't do understanding. Aiden does charm. Aiden does excitement.
Kamal: He's not good for you, Sof.
Sofia: That's the whole point... *laugh* But you're right. Aiden isn't good for me. In fact, he's probably with some girl right now.
Kamal: Want me to check?
Sofia: No. Actually, he's not with some girl right now because of you. And for that, you get a kiss.
*kiss*

The male would have to be Kamal, since he's a med student and also has the running joke with sophia about the dog.

I personally recorded the call from an axon in the Run_for_cover group and found two more dropped anonymously in my email. All three are from cold axons that may officially go live tomorrow. Get them here and now without the wait!

Here are the files. The audio on Run For Cover is really bad. The phone happens to be at the end of a long, narrow hallway that is heavily trafficked, so there is a tremendous amount of background noise.

From listening to bill's mp3s, I can't really tell what I am hearing in run for cover. It might be a jersey/durga conversation, I think I will have to wait until that sound clip is released. In something I carry it is definitely Kamal that is talking to Sophia. And in kiss them, it sounds like Jan playing her game against that other guy. It sounds like Jan is winning.

Run_For_Cover sounds like Jan and the shady guy who made a bet with her. They're playing pool, which is the loud cracks, but I can't really make out anything they're saying, except Jan at the end emphasizing, "Run for cover." Perhaps it goes along with her running monologue in Kiss Them.

In Something_I_Carry, Kamal's almost certainly continuing from his tale about his sister dying early on from a genetic disorder. She probably said something at the end of the previous clip that he tries to shake off, but she realizes that that's probably the reason he decided to become a doctor -- so others wouldn't have to lose family so early. I kinda hope he doesn't find out about his sister's flash clone, if that's what really happened.

The whole thread Kiss Them is part of sounds very odd.

It sounds to me in "kiss_them" like Jan is making fun of the creepy guy.

As the creepy guy shoots in the previous clip he's talking about controlling the billard balls, making them go where you want.

When it's Jan's turn in "kiss_them", she has a more subtle (and sentual) approach to pool, and lampoons the sleezy guy's monologue as she whups his ass at his own game.

Huh.

Putting the hammer to Thin, eh? As in Thin Kinkle?

Hm. Almost sounds as if Jan is going vigilante, much like stupid_cop. My SPEC is based on this, retirement, and tweaked_up, where it sounds like she's asking the southern woman why she hasn't been allowed to do anything with her talents.

[INFO]Moons game referenced in skin.wav

Just found this thread, where has it been all my life?

In skin.wav, a game called moons is referenced, here are the rules:
http://pages.prodigy.net/unohu/moons.htm (in case it matters)

I'm gonna work on some transcripts.

Skin.wav transcript

skin.wav wrote:
Man: Now, see that was a young move. Whoever's running you needs to smooth out some edges here, you can't put the hammer to Thin in his own place! <pause><mumble>deal for you.
Jan: Yah?
Man: See the grub let's play for his skin. We'll play moons, you win, the grub slides, I win, why, I guess, I get your skin.
Jan: Gee, I'm underage sir, an offer like that would be illegal.
Man: <creepy laugh> I guess that, if I win, I'll find some babysitting for you to do.
-short wind down noise

OK, I can't quite figure out exactly what the man says before Jan says Yah? Logically, he would be saying "I've got a deal for you" but however much I listen, I can't convince myself that's what he's saying. Probably not important anyway.

So...who is the grub?
