SF Axon Update

Hi Ranger D, twas I you met today.

I arrived with much time to spare. Again, guarded phones like a rabid animal (minus foaming at the mouth Smile ). Then another beekeeper showed up! I'm sorry, I totally forgot your forum name! We both covered the phones and when the northeast phone rang, she answered it gave the requisite answer and I got to hear surgeon_general for the third time today!

13:29 - HOT
Arrived at the infamous 777 Market St. phones. I knew which phone it was since I was there last week. The appointed time comes......no ring! So the other beekeeper picks up the other phone thinking that maybe it didn't ring but the call is coming through. I do exactly what she did and there is Melissa on the other line. Same drill, answer question, etc. Smile (I would've been dead in the water without you, thank you!). Unfortunately, she was trying for the 13:37 that was 10 blocks away, so she had to leave and didn't get a chance to hear this audio file. domestic_skills was a little more interesting and I'll post the transcript/paraphrase in just a bit.

RD

I got to the 13:17 phone and Ranger D was already there (see above). After waiting to hear him say Apocalypso and get the 13:29 one hot, I jogged down toward the 13:37 one but, because of missing lights to cross the street, I missed it (I did cross against the light a couple of times, but the few times that a steady stream of cars were speeding past me, I took inventory of my life and decided it wasn't worth the risk). I got there at 13:38, one minute too late! I was hot (the temperature was probably in the low 80s--we seem to be having our Indian summer a little earlier than usual this year), sweaty, and grumpy.

more to come...

The queen, for her part, is the unifying force of the community; if she is removed from the hive, the workers very quickly sense her absence. After a few hours, or even less, they show unmistakable signs of queenlessness.

SF Axon Update

13:49 - COLD
I had to go back even farther than the distance I just covered to get to the 13:49, so I hopped on a streetcar for two stops. I made it to the phones with 4 minutes to spare, only there were two sets of 2 phones across the cable car tracks from each other and there was a guy on one of each set when I got there and they were still on the phones when 13:49 came. Neither of the other two were correct, so my grumpiness deepened.

13:55 - HOT
Luckily, the next location was only a block and a half away and there was only one phone and nobody was on it. The time came, I picked up the receiver, even though it didn't ring, and voila! I hottenated the axon (smarter) and my grumpiness abated considerably.

On leaving the old nest, the swarm normally flies only a few metres and settles. Scout bees look for a suitable place to start the new colony. Eventually, one location wins favor and the whole swarm takes to the air.

SF Axon Update

14:43 - COLD

There was no way I could make the 14:03 (very far away and only 5 or 6 minutes to get there), so I went to the evil Starbucks and had a delicious evil espresso frappuccino. Ariock met me there and we were waiting, drinking our beverages and looking out the front window that faces Market Street. At 2:33, I glance at my clock and say "We have 10 minutes." Ariock says, "How far do we have to go?" Then he sees me looking intently out of the window and looks where I am looking (at the phones) as I say, "Well, let's see, maybe 30 to 40 feet?"
So, we go outside about 6 minutes before the time. We know which of the two phones is the correct one because we had activated the i_hate_you hivekut axon here. The bad news is that when the phone didn't ring and I did pick it up, when I answered "Apocalypso" to the "What ship am I confined to?" question, it didn't work. I said it twice, with space in between. In my defense, there was a LOT of noise at this location plus about 15 feet behind us there was a shoe shine stand that had a lovely audio system and the music they were playing was loud. Ariock posited that the ambient noise polluted my transmission and I am inclined to agree with him (I need something to assuage my guilt at feeling like I screwed it up).

but, wait, there's more kids....

Let's imagine for a moment that we are tiny enough to follow a bee into a hive. Usually the first thing we would have to get used to is the darkness…

SF Axon Update

16:09 - HOT
Ariock and I strolled to this location, had a small bite to eat at a nearby café, and then stood guard next to the phone for like 15 minutes. 16:09 comes, the phone doesn't ring, as usual, I count 7 seconds, pick up the phone, but it is a dial tone. So then Ariock starts taking off looking for another phone, while I go towards the purported 13:37 location, about a half a block away. I pick that one up, nothing. Ariock finds no other phones and goes back to the correct phone, picks it up and the call had come in (it still never rang). He hottentotted the axon! (kiss_them)

17:05 – HOT

Ariock and I arrive on the scene and fart around in nearby stores for awhile. Yesterday, we had scoped out the phones and there were two that were likely, and one in the BART/MUNI station that was actually closer to the coordinates than the street phones. While we waited, Mazian arrived and went to stand guard at the BART phone, then DarkForge showed up. When 15:05 came, We waited a bit, then counted 7 seconds, picked up our phones and there were dial tones. Then I waited a few more seconds, picked up my receiver again and it was right! Mazian came back very shortly thereafter and we repeated and all listened and all was cool. (something_i_carry)

Now that you are all tired of my stories, I am finished. Ha!

Useful Information

IMPORTANT -- USEFUL INFORMATION
PLEASE read my post (at the bottom of the page) regarding the ringing, or lack thereof, of the phones: http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=6191&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=60

This information could save your life! Ok, not really, but it might help you with your axon hunting...

I'm sorry, I know I should've posted it here in the first place, but I've had a long day and I am groggy.

Axons - Salt Lake City, Utah

Hello everyone. I have been tracking the ilovebees.com situation for a while now but am just now starting to actively participate. I found a website on the internet that supposedly mapped out the GPS cooredinates and so me and my girlfriend went off in search of one that appeared to be in south Salt Lake City. We found the strangest thing when we got there... An old british phone booth that had no phone in it. It was sitting just outside a metal scrap yard. I decided to look around it/inside it to make sure there was nothing special about it and it was just an odd coincidence when the owner came out and started to grill me. I explained everything and he thought I was insane, but oh well Smile

Anyhow, I borrowed a relatives aviation GPS and discovered that the site was accurate on it's first GPS coordinate of 40.8, but very wrong on it's second, saying that 111. was in Utah, when in reality it showed we were around 70.

So, here is my question. What is a good website to map out GPS coordinates so I can see if any are near me. I don't want to just partake in everyone else's hard work, I wish to help as well. If anyone knows of any coordiantes that map out to SLC, UT, please let me know, I will be more than happy to help.

Thank you again everyone for letting me post such a NOOB question.

With all the new regional threads, subtopics, and mixed topics, I can't find a location listing for the latest set of axons.

I'd search, but the key words would show me at least three sets' worth.

Help?

The easy way is to click the link in the black box on the front page, which will take you to fable.html.

To me, the easiest thing is to install Sapagoo's PayPhone Tool in your browser. It lets you enter coords and then use various sites to map it out.

I've got Pluck!

Forgive me if I'm wrong but I read Does Not Equal's question as looking for this:

http://www.lou2.net/bees/fable-coords.html

Also, the SP's mention of having Pluck made me sit up and take notice when a reference to an offline PDA browser named Plucker popped up in a google seach on I ran on geocaching. Geocache enthusiasts seem to like it as you can use it to, you know, do geocache type things. It may be helpful to axon hunters as well.

Got the 7:01PDT insurrection.

Couldn't get anybody from my crew out there this morning, sooo, 7:00PDT I call the middle phone of the bank of 3 phones at the DoubleTree hotel (I already know it's the phone on the left), get ahold of Brian who works there at the hotel and begin to explain that due to a "scavenger hunt", the phone to his left will ring any second now ... *hears phone ringing*

me: OK, pick it up and say hello
Brian: got it
me: Is there a computer voice on the other end?
Brian: yes
me: Ok, it's going to ask you what ship you are assigned to .. you need to say Apocolypso, got that? Apocolypso
Brian: got it. .......... Apocolypso
me: OK, now wait a sec and say it again
Brian: Apocolypso ...............................
me: OK, now what are you hearing?
Brian: Something about a father and his daughter.
me: SWEET! yah, that's it. *explains about "unlocking" more story as we answer these phone, etc. etc.
Brian: cool
me: well, thanks. This might happen again next week there.
Brian: cool
me: OK, well thanks again, later!
Brian: bye
*click*

Cool

EDIT: So Boise is 3/3 again. Wish I could help out with others. Maybe I need to follow Dana's new advice and reach out and get help from (weird out) some friends. I'll start checking.

Hey, just doing my part. I wish my part could be more than 3 axons / week, but that's pretty good for back-water Boise, ID. But 1.6627...% of the axons hot (7/421) aint too bad for a city of ~190,000 (with 3 truly active bee-keepers as far as I can tell)
EDIT: +1 "conscript" now, huh Laughing Thanks Brian!

Hello, everybody, my apologies for missing the 15:55PDT axon last week. Had a little family emergency in Florida to take care of.
Good news, though, the same location is being used this round, and I'm 95% sure where the phone is this time. It's at 14:21PDT this time around, and I'm pretty sure it's the phone at the Dekalb Barnes & Noble. Count me there today. Smile
