 Sunshine Books 4 Less
The Happy Place to buy books

I thought I would go ahead and start a thread for this as there is a puzzle waiting to be solved.

Notice at Sunshine Books there is a hidden link to Frank Eastley's blog, where the puzzle waits. He's also on twitter. email is frank.eastley @ gmail.com

Another thing, anyone from Dallas might want to be on the lookout for, "a series of strange, defaced posters scattered around downtown Dallas."

Wink . . . . . . Meta Alert
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I'm also pretty sure that this and two other args will at some point meet up and become one larger arg, and they all may even be part of another ongoing arg.

See ---> Return of the ARG Practicum: A Three For One Deal at:

Analyze the image below and give me the solution. What am I looking for? Figuring that out is part of the challenge. Good luck.

Regarding the puzzle, above.

I'm getting replies back on some guesses and can confirm that it's not:
  • "M" (Semaphore)
  • "8:15"
  • "'Around' 8:15" (Because of the spiral)
  • "pi" (Because it's 'phonetic')

The symbol is almost a commercial "at" (@) sign, but not quite. I don't recognize it.
And it doesn't seem to purposefully intersect any relevant parts of the main image.

What the heck does he say in that video? I can't figure it out. I can hear "Hello, this is Frank" and then I'm lost.

I think it's just something about the test, but I can't make it out either.

Thanks to Rogi pointing out the spiral to me, here are a couple of images that may help.

Dunno I Just Dunno. This one is hard. Dunno

I sent him an email with "blankie", because of the "blank key" in the picture, but never got an answer so figured it was not correct. The keys look like they might be forming an XL, so perhaps Roman Numerals? I did notice the picture is .png, which means it can have layers, any PhotoShop gurus out there?

You're right, he does just seem to be repeating the contest rules. I tried "dictionary" as the answer, but that's not it. (I looked at the file name, the keys, and got "phonetic key" so I thought "dictionary" might be the answer...guess I was way off base though). Where did the spiral come from? How did you guys find that?

Initially, I traced it just by looking at the picture at various zoom ratios.
Then I found that the graphics program GIMP can render the symbol if you play around with edge detection. Though sylvia seems to be much better at it than I am. Paint.NET doesn't catch it, at all.

And enaxor, I don't see any layers, but I'm no guru.

Shrinking it down by half in PS using Nearest Neighbor interpolation also works well (notice the checkerboard-like pattern when you zoom in on the original). Also reveals a line across the top, but that could be an unintentional side effect of the odd height when shrinking.

Sorry, What does that mean?

I sent in "585" "13/4 pi" "10.21" as answers. Waiting to hear back.

Sorry, What does that mean?

http://www.slurpee.com/
I got my son a Slurpee in the Ironman action figure cup as we were leaving the Flynn Lives event, last week. Yeah, he's a nut. I had coffee and was still cold.

ETA: Tired of guessing numbers. I measure it to be 575 or 576 (Hard to be accurate given the source.)
Initially, the responder made it sound like the guesses were going to boil down to a single number, but somewhere along the way, it morphed to the need to find the number and something more. What that could be, I know not.

Here's a kinda dump of what we bounced back-and-forth:

Quote:
Rogi Ocnorb: 95 (minutes) 544 (degrees)

Frank Eastley: Definitely on the right track, but not quite.

Rogi Ocnorb: Just for giggles... 545 546

Frank Eastley: Not quite, but close.

Rogi Ocnorb: 550?

Frank Eastley: Close.

Rogi Ocnorb: Sorry. 579 or 580? Finally actually measured it Wink

Frank Eastley: No worries. And I'm afraid those aren't the answers.

Rogi Ocnorb: How about 575?

Frank Eastley: Nope. Sorry.

Rogi Ocnorb: Maybe 576... But I think 577 is too much.

Frank Eastley: Still off. Maybe there's something you're missing?

Rogi Ocnorb: I obviously don't get it. Guess I'll go back to more promising replies. I'll open the bidding with 551.

Frank Eastley: Ha ha... Nope, but keep at it. Smile

Rogi Ocnorb: Albeit... 552

Frank Eastley: Keep going. There's one very important detail you're missing, though, so I'm afraid that even if you land in the right place, I still won't be able to call it correct.

Rogi Ocnorb: Oh well. I tried.

Frank Eastley: Indeed you did. There's no limit to how many times you can try, though, so please feel free to come on back if you have any more ideas.

This is my little bit of progress so far:

Me: Is it 553 degrees? And also, do we have to translate the number with the phonetic alphabet? (ex: fife fife tree = 553) I am still stuck on the phonetic clue.

Frank: That's not it, but you're heading in the right direction.

Me: Ok, 555 --> fife fife fife. You're looking for a musical key?

Frank: I'm afraid not.
