Alright you... I won't have you beating my time! I got a 2:08 run, but I wasn't happy with some of the mistakes I made along the way so I tried just one more time, and... well, see attachment 1 below.

Other than that, I may as well post up my route, and some tips. Attachment 2 (the zip file) shows the mansion plans and my route around them. Some general tips...
1) Do a practice run before going for speed. This gets you accustomed to the controls, layout and guard movements. This also gets those messages from Anna out of the way, which normally waste time in a run.
2) Khaos and Chrisss are right, it is ever so slightly quicker to go the normal way through the mansion rather than through the ducts, so do that, avoiding the guards.
3) The secret message in the ducts is
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Remember the letter 'u'. Anna x

- I'm also unsure what it means right now, but best to document it since there's probably going to be more.
4) In general, it's easy to win the little minigame when encountering orange guards and cameras. But it takes about 3 seconds, so if you can avoid their gaze altogether, it's even better.
5) Use the keyboard! I cannot stress this enough - mouse control isn't going to help you here.
6) You can grab/interact with objects the moment you start entering the square beside them, and can keep moving after you hit the space bar. This can save a valuable few tenths of a second.
7) Turn as little as possible. Turning doesn't strictly waste time, but the more you're moving in a straight line, the less time you're likely to waste fiddling with directions.

Annotations on the route plan...
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Most of the annotations are numbered, but first a quick key:
Red squares (ground floor only) are stationary guards and their field of vision. Don't hit these squares, else it's game over.
The orange triangles in the basement are the cameras (approximate view range when they're pointing directly out from the wall).
The purple square is the purple ground floor key.
The yellowy-orange (same colour as the route) square is the secret message from Anna.
The blue square is the blue basement fuse box.
The sickly green square is the sickly green top floor swipecard.
The grey circles are the movable pillars for the puzzle.
The yellow caution-tape squares are the objective squares for the puzzle.
The other green square is the painting!
Most doors are marked as white lines in a wall.
Doors marked with other colours (e.g. the purple door) require the item of the same colour first.
The yellow door requires the puzzle to be solved first.

Ground floor
1) Starting point
2) This is where you can enter/exit the ventilation shaft, in case you want to see the message yourself.
3) We make our way right up to the stationary guard's vision here. Curiously, there's a one square gap between the red and orange ranges here which is entirely safe, and we need to use it.
4) Grab the key, and turn back. Apologies for the messiness of the line that follows.
5) We need to wait here for the guard who just popped out of the door to the right. We could play the minigame and win easily, but we wait less than 3 seconds here so it's quicker.
6) Somewhere around here we'll run into another guard. Play the minigame, win easily, move right on past him.
7) Since we have the key, we move through this door easily.
8) Hit the dumb-waiter (I think) to move on down to the basement.

Basement 1
1) We emerge from the dumb-waiter.
2) This little manoeuvre will help us avoid the guard and camera - you'll see what I mean when we get there.
3) Grab the fuse from the fuse box. It won't show up in inventory, but you'll know you've got it. (fuse box count: 1) (anyone who gets that reference gets a cookie)
4) Amazingly, if you've got the timing right so far, you can actually walk straight through the middle of this room avoiding both the guard to your left and the camera to your right!
5) Hit the elevator, top floor. This is the top, and default selected, option, so you can double tap space when you get here to start moving before you even see the menu.

Top Floor
Quick note: yes, the entire bottom half of this floor is purely a distraction. Don't bother with it!
1) We emerge from the elevator.
2) This door is why we needed the fuse down in the basement. Grab that swipecard!
3) I'm not even going to attempt to map the puzzle route on there, so instead a guide...
  • Push pillar A east 3 squares.
  • Turn around, go south to pillar B, and push it east 3 squares.
  • Go around pillar B, and push pillar A north 1 square, locking it in place.
  • Push pillar B south 1 square, west 3 squares, and south 3 squares, locking it in place.
  • Go east past both desks and make your way to pillar C.
  • Push pillar C west 3 squares.
  • Go back around the chairs and push pillar D west FOUR squares.
  • Push pillar D north 1 then east 1 square, locking it in place.
  • Push pillar C south 1, east 3 and south 3 squares, locking it in place and opening the painting room.
  • The route begins again directly after this.

4) Grab the painting. Now to make our getaway!
5) The guard will be making his way toward you, so we need to move up as soon as we can to avoid running directly into him. We will still need to do the minigame, though.
6) Take the elevator back to the basement. This is the bottom option, so quickly hit space-up-space.

Basement 2
1) We emerge from the elevator.
2) Sticking to this wall means we avoid the camera on the right.
3) And we make our way out of the laundry chute.

Phew! That took a while to make, but there you go.

Incidentally, Chrisss, what video at the end are you talking about? I've seen no video.

Satellite schedules

16 April 2010
Satellites are complicated things. Some are geostationary: they just sit above one fixed point on Earth, orbiting at exactly the same speed that the Earth rotates. But others, like Uncle Meynard's military satellite, are made to be more mobile. They circle the Earth at high speed, able to see a large part of the Earth's surface but only for a few minutes at a time. This presents us with a problem.
Our satellite is travelling at thousands of miles per hour, looking down at a very focused section of Earth as it goes. It's only due to pass over the area we want – Rafanaman's mansion near Shanghai – at 22:43 local time on Saturday night, with an operational window of just under five minutes. It's the only chance we're going to get while Lewis is in the country and not actually on the racetrack.
So on Saturday night, after qualifying and the night before the race, he's going in. I'll be keeping an eye on things via satellite. And I'll let you know how it goes. Wish us luck...

3:43 pm here in the jolly old UK. Looks like I'll be online in case anything goes down, or immediately after in case we get a success tweet/blog.

er I think that should be 1:43pm (13:43). You have probably incorrectly allowed for BST.

Shanghai is Zulu time plus 8 hours

London is Zulu time plus 1 hour

Shanghai is ahead of London by 7 hours so 20:43 in Shanghai is 13:43 in London.

This is confirmed by the time zone converter which Lysithea provided the link for above.

Huh. There's 3 possibilities here:
1) I'm dumb, and read 13:43 as 3:43.
2) Lysithea somehow copy pasted wrong, as her post clearly mentions 22:43 Shanghai time, and so we used that time.
3) Anna edited the blog post between then and now to 20:43.

My money's on 3. Either way, nothing new yet...

Lex, you are probably right with your assertion.

I hadn't spotted that there is a discrepancy between Anna's blog post on the home page which shows 20:43 and the archived copy which shows 22:43.

Yeah, I was kinda dragged away by that family thing that happens occasionally. Looks like there was nothing to miss though; we'd done what we needed to by getting a great time on the heist sim which showed Lewis the route.

Waiting for an update, but it looks like it's basically Mission 1 Complete! (remember, the game is supposed to consist of 5 [I think] missions)

ETA (because double posting is badong): yup, mission accomplished. New blog post from Anna...

Mission accomplished

I've posted a video of the heist last night so you can see Lewis in action. It all went according to plan – well, almost. That man infuriates me sometimes. I don't even want to think about what would have happened if he'd been caught.

But the main thing is that the Turner painting is winging its way back to the museum where it belongs, and this time it isn't going on a dodgy freighter. I imagine a very angry Mr Rafanaman will be waking up somewhere wishing he could go to the police, but unfortunately for him, he didn't own what was taken.

It's a multi-million dollar work of art, part of our global heritage, and thanks to you, millions of people will be able to enjoy it again for free. You've done a great public service – even if it was in secret.

So I'm warming to the idea of working with you all. This job has turned out well and I don't mind saying that you surpassed my expectations. It would be crass of me to dwell on how low those expectations were.

I believe we can work together again. For now, take a few weeks off. You deserve it. But keep watching the site, follow Lewis's Twitter feed, and we'll let you know when there's another job. Thanks again to you all...

tl;dr - There's a video of the heist at http://link.brightcove.com/services/player/bcpid58115982001?bctid=78606315001
