I am completely stumped, I was hoping someone would come up with something over the weekend.

I don't like the idea of too many clues but I also don't like moving on and leaving something unsolved - I'd probably lean towards another clue before moving on but if others think they may yet crack it without more help then that's great too.

I've been following along with this a bit and have been turning over some thoughts about the most recent one:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

The two thoughts that I put together, although I don't know how they give the entire answer is the fact that "amuck" or "amok" is a Malaysian word originally (for 'going crazy/wild'), and a "lay" is a kind of lyrical poem/song, so perhaps Malay, although I don't know how "ma" would fit in unless it it supposed to be about playing a song for May Day.

While I can't really follow the logic for Dante's attempt, it did prompt me to look to my go-to resource for these.
www.ryhmer.com
Using Dante's word and selecting a "last syllable" match type, you get a short list:
http://www.rhymer.com/RhymingDictionaryLast/malay.html

The one I'm interested in is
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
melee

Which ties with the last clue in a "sorta, kinda" way.

XXXIII

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
So, um,, melee is right I'm not sure how it fits or how Rogi/Dante got to it exactly! I'm flabbergasted! This is one of those times when I was just thinking," OK, I'll check them to be thorough, though I know they can't be right."

Are we ready for the next one? Let us soldier on.

XXXIII

To make my first, a lamb will serve
If one fore-quarter we reserve.

My next is good to speed a bolt;
Don't ever feed it to your colt.

My last through Henry's visor broke;
Montgomery dealt the fatal stroke.

Since Mercy rides in Horror's van,
Hail in my whole man's love to man!

The last 2 are easy:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
cross(BOW)

and
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
LANCE (Or possibly some single syllable word for "splinter"[chip, fleck, scrap, bit, flake])

But the first isn't coming to me.

interlude...back to XXXII...question:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
by the way, is there anyway Malay could have been pronounced differently in 1895 -closer to melee? I don't get where either syllable comes from

I try to understand the nuances of these charades as best I can, but I simply don't grasp that last one. Oh well.

On the newest riddle and working from Rogi's previous post:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
LANCE comes from how King Henry II of France was accidentally killed by Count Montgomery.

For the second,
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
another word for bow is YEW

If for the first,
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
we take away the front portion/four quarters of lamb, that leaves us with AMB

"Mercy rides in Horror's van"
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
might surely be AMB-YEW-LANCE. AMBULANCE.

Good job, drizjr!
That first part was crafty.
I knew the brits used yew wood for their bows, but never knew they called them that.
Always learnin'!

Oh. and to rose...
I always thought they were pronounced identically.
"May-Lay" (Sorry I don't do IPA).

ETA: Checked Websters and see that it can be as above or
"Muh-Lay"

For what it's worth, I pronounce melee and Malay the same way. but I don't think I've actually ever had reason to say "Malay" so what do I know? Smile

XXXIV

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
ambulance is right! Clever thinking drizjr. Reserve one -quarter of a lamb just made me think of Easter dinner.

About pronunciation, I thought Malay was muh-lay. I read melee as mel-ay
although I'm sure I've heard it pronounced correctly. I watch a lot of sports.

Speaking of sports; Onwords Smile

XXXIV

Although it was a base my whole,
The umpire cried, "My first at first."
The player who to second stole,
A second in my second cursed,
Then turned upon his heel about;
No wonder that he was put out.

XXXV

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
outrage is correct! Good work both cath and booba!

XXXV

O Maiden, with you lips apart!
You know my first, and feel it smart.

My last, the path of dalliance, leads
'Twixt hedges sweet to flowery meads.

We call my whole a man of prayer;
What further need of praise is there?

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

lips smarting = chapped

path between hedges = lane

man of prayer = chaplain

XXXVI

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I guess they didn't have Suzy Chapstick in 1895? Anyone else here remember her? Chaplain is correct. Way to go Dante!

The next one, and the last one I can do til possibly Thursday, reminds me of Tolkien, at least the extended version of The Two Towers...I checked and JRR was 3 years old in 1895.

Allons-y!

XXXVI

Queen Mary on the scaffold stood,
My second with my first she viewed.
Despite her crimes we mourn her doom,
And twine my whole upon her tomb.
