[Trailhead]Ministry of Argon
Part2 to the Vanessa Atalanta game?

Just got this email a few minutes ago.
--------------------------------------------

Greenwich, London, United Kingdom

23rd April 2010

Dear Applicant,

Please find enclosed an invite, as requested.
Apologies for any delay.

Should, for any reason, you be unable to open the attached document, please ask someone who can.
Indeed, should you think this suitable, invite others.
Each is to prove their individual worth however. Please respect this.

Yours faithfully,
Libatrix.

Moving the Seconds for National Defence
-----------

The string of Base64 was hidden, whited out. It translates to "Around in circles do we fly".

It seems like the story is picking back up. There's a word doc attached (which I'll add to this) that shows the image JPW used on his facebook. There's a quote above it, "Why is the sky blue?[1984]", and if you have spellcheck enabled, a red squiggle under it. Highlighting it did nothing for me, but moving the picture up so it overlapped showed 'Vanessa Atalanta says hello', followed by a chart of letters.

Here's hoping the old team is still lurking around on here.

Edit :
Strike that comment about attaching it. I've 'reached my quota' on uploads. Lemme go rapidshare it or something.

Edit 2:
Rapidshare link up.

I know it's typically frowned upon to double post, but I'm attempting to keep the first post as just the email I received.

The first thing I started to look up is what the quote had to do with anything. Searching 'Why is the sky blue? 1894' didn't give me much at all, but after switching up search phrases and following random links, I found a tie to a man named Lord Rayleigh. After searching around, I found what I assume is a massive tie-in.

Quote:
Rayleigh, Lord (1842-1919) was a British physicist who made many important discoveries in a wide variety of fields. He received the Nobel Prize in physics in 1904 for studying the density of gases and for discovering and isolating the chemical element argon. Argon is a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas element that forms 0.94 percent of the earth's atmosphere. Lord Rayleigh and William Ramsay discovered it in 1894.

And later in that same article

Quote:
In 1871, Rayleigh accurately explained why the sky is blue. The colors of the sky result from the scattering of sunlight by the gas molecules and dust particles in the atmosphere. Sunlight consists of light waves of varying wavelengths, each of which is seen as a different color. The shortest light waves appear blue and the longest red. The blue light waves are readily scattered by tiny particles of matter in the atmosphere, but the red light waves travel undisturbed unless they are struck by larger particles. When the sky is clear, the waves of blue light are scattered much more than those of any other color. As a result, the sky appears blue.

(Article is found at http://science.howstuffworks.com/lord-rayleigh-info.htm)

I'm trying to see how this ties in to the rest of the puzzle.

Also. The date on the email says the 23rd. Even in Greenwich right now, it should only be the 22nd(and not for another hour). I assume V's either activated the machine from the last game, and is sending a message back, or has jumped the gun with that.
--
The grid in the word doc is 26 x 5, for a total of 130 letters. The first 15 of which are in bold, leaving 115 not in bold. I don't see how this comes in to play here, yet. Still trying to bring things together.

By the way, to the old VA crew, re-add me on FB if possible? I cleared you all thinking this was all dead, but now that it's back in motion, I figure it will be helpful to have a solid means of contact.

It's a Vigenere cipher:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
key: argon

ministry of argon cord invites those that desire to join our elite force to first electronically mail at britain dot com use my first signed the herald

It should be noted that 'Libitrix' is part of the scientific name for an apparently common UK moth 'Scoliopteryx libatrix' also called 'The Herald'. It fits with the phrase 'Around in circles do we fly', as moths circle light sources. Perhaps it's a more ominous reference to the idiom "like moths to a flame", either signifying that we can't resist following or will be burned by doing so.

That said, concerning the instructions, I've tried emailing the following and all of it was returned as undeliverable. Britain.com doesn't seem to have any email capabilities so there must be something more to it?

scoliopteryxSPLATbritain.com
libatrixSPLATbritain.com
theheraldSPLATbritain.com

Thread from previous game for those that want to take a gander: http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=663937
Would someone who took place in that one care to give a rundown of the story?
Edit: Nevermind, just found the wiki: http://redqueen.wikia.com/wiki/Vanessa_Atalanta_Wiki

Well, the moth bit could fit in well with the butterfly connection with the last game.

I'll give the emails a shot and try some other connections.
May have to try to reach the old game profile for V.

Edit :

The email was from donotreplySPLATenglandmail.com. Could @englandmail.com be the address we need to respond to?

Edit again:

thehearaldSPLATenglandmail.com seems to be it. I tried libatrixSPLATenglandmail.com which resulted in an unsendable main, thehearaldSPLATenglandmail.com and loltestSPLATenglandmail.com as a test to see if it was just the mail carrier or what. The only one that didn't send back an error was thehearaldSPLATenglandmail.com

So, it seems I'll be waiting on a reply from them. Referenced some parts of last game involving the Ministry, hopefully that'll get the ball moving.

Ugh. Forget what was just said. A few minutes after posting that edit, the sending failed error came back to me. Guess it was just slow this time.

I'm in .

Britain.com does have mail capabilities as far as I can tell - they definitely have an MX record available so they do receive email. Also, I dont think you'd get a bounceback.

I'm working on this as well - trying to figure out "use my first". we're assuming she meant first name, but what if she meant "first" something else?

Went back to the MOA_Invite doc and highlighted just the bold text, and did the cypher on that which came back with ministry of argon. I then sent an email to ministryofargonSPLATbritain.com and haven't gotten anything back yet... might just be slow, but keep your fingers crossed Smile

nope... im stumped!

Just popping in, since I got a FB message from Telos this morning about this. Unfortunately, I'll probably have to mostly lurk this time around, due to a new job. I did check my email and I also received one, which was different from Telos'. IWell, actually, I received two emails. One was sent one day ago and the other, one hour ago. The first one was exactly like Telos'. The second one was the first one verbatim, with an added addition.

Greenwich, London, United Kingdom

23rd April 2010
The birth of the bard, the death of the bard.
The celebration of all that is English, soon 26 [plus a littLe extra for the queen]

Dear Applicant, (etc etc...all the rest was the same).

For those just joining, during Vanessa Atalanta, I was one of the two Queens. Wikipedia is telling me that William Shakespeare was indeed born on April 26 and died on April 23.

As for the "celebration of all that is English", I don't know. That was the day that Jamestown was settled, but other than that, I'm not sure.

Edit: D'oh! Should've known to highlight the end of the email I got. Hidden message is:

Why with the time do I not glance aside
To new-found methods and to compounds strange?
Why write I still all one, ever the same,
And keep invention in a noted weed,
That every word doth almost tell my name...
Showing their birth and where they did proceed

This is from Shakespeare's Sonnet 76.

Sorry for double-posting, but I'm having issues when I to edit. I must have a sticky key because the scroll bar scrolls up and down.

Anyway, on a lark, I tried jeanpierreweiller@englandmail.com , williamshakespeare@englandmail.com , and then I tried to be a smartass and send one to mailSPLATbritain.com based on
first electronically mail at britain dot com use my first signed the herald . Needless to say, that didn't work either. Based on our previous contact with the ministry, I sent one to jeanSPLATbritain.com. Jean-Pierre was our Ministry contact last time. That bounced back, too. I'm stumped. Embarassed

Just posting to confirm that I've received Facebook notice from a couple of you mentioning this, and I will get as involved as I can...just not tonight.

Edit: Oh, and...if we happen to need a new wiki, I'm already setting one up, so don't make another new one yourselves. I have a feeling a new wiki for the new game (or new chapter) might be helpful, but we shall see. I've decided to let it stand on its own in my mind unless it becomes clear that we should indeed reference information from the previous game (or chapter); if it turns out later that a modification of the old wiki would be more appropriate, I can copy the content over easily enough.

JPW's old email works. Know it for a fact. I messaged him last night and got a reply this afternoon. Two, infact.

My message.
Quote:
I wonder. Could the rat still be alive?
I wonder. Does said rat still have ties to the Ministry?
I wonder. Would said rat have put in a word to said Ministry about me wanting admission?

I wonder about various other things too, rat-boy. But, I'll ask those when the time is right.

I expect a response if you're still alive.

His response.
Quote:
Aye.
Aye..
Aye...

My response to that.
Quote:
Hm. If you're alive, then I take it V.S. Is dead?

(I think we were already told the answer before, but I have horrible memory.)

He responded with :
Quote:
Yes. Did you not read bout it somewhere online?
I'm sure my daughter probably blogged it or something - she has taken to the net quite a lot now the headaches have finally gone away.
Vladimir died valiantly. For something he believed in. Honour his memory and join our force.
If you can.

JPW

V started tweeting again.

Just wishing everyone out there a happy thursday - just finished blogging at work so now off home! Angulus Ridet Greenwich!

Then, a direct tweet to me.

Claire started posting on her facebook again as well.

That's all I have at the moment, I've been out all day. I'll look in to the email, maybe ask the rat (JPW) about this application.

When I first came here to check out the thread, I thought I still saw a FB profile up for JPW, and none for Claire...now, as Telos has noted, Claire's is back up...and JPW's is gone.

Oh, and I can't write on Claire's wall or comment on her status.

Edit: and she's poked me! so I poked her back and sent her greetings in a message Smile.

Edit2: Here's a link to the new wiki: http://argon.wikia.com/wiki/Ministry_of_Argon_Wiki .

I've added a section to the Puzzles page to track all the different e-mail addresses we try. I tried vanessaSPLATbritain.com with no success.

My understanding of the decoded message is not that it asks us to "use my first signed the herald" but that it asks us to "Use my first. Signed, The Herald." (i.e., that last big is a signing-off and an indication of who wrote it...not part of the instructions directly, though related to them. So I don't think we should expect to see "the herald" in the e-mail address at all, though I've been wrong before Smile.

In the UK and Ireland, it was originally sold under the name Marathon. Mars standardized many of its global brand names and the name was changed to Snickers in 1990. Following the name change, the bar moved from being Britain's ninth most popular bar to the third most popular.

Mars has since re-registered the original name as a UK trademark. There is also a campaign to rename the bar: [link given there to a "Bring Back Marathon" site]

Edit 2: Vanessa also has a comment posted correcting her "offie" spelling mistake, and implies that this is slang for some kind of alcohol? Can someone clarify this? I have to get back to actually doing work now Razz.

Edit 3: ...and Claire has fixed her profile so you can post and comment on her Wall, and sent me a message in reply to mine (no play details, just acknowledging mine more or less), and we are engaged in a poke war Smile. Ok, seriously, must do real work now Smile!

A marathon is colloquially 26 miles (it's actually 26 miles and 385 yards). That could be a reference to
