Back again from the 11:09 axon and again no success. Same problem as yesterday, phone was completely silent, then a quick blurb of sound, then silence again. I could make out some of the sound this time, though. Part of it was a high-pitched tone like you might hear on a fax machine, and the other part was almost definitely a woman's voice, although it was impossible to tell what was being said. It only lasts about one second long before it returns to silence. All things considered, I'd say this phone seems to be a bust. Oddly enough, the label on the phone says it does NOT accept incoming calls. However, I tried the phone beforehand with a cell phone, and we were able to hear each other across the line (with only slight static), so it clearly accepts some incoming calls. Also, there does not seem to be any sort of volume control on this phone (which was my first thought when it was silent yesterday), so no help there. I'm not sure if it's even worth it to try the phone from now on, seeing as I have no idea what could be done to change the situation. Any ideas would be a great help. Short of that, we'll just have to hope a few other people can get the other axons in that group hot, and we wont need to worry about it.

Hmm, it was activated last week, though...did you try hitting the volume button immediately to kick the receiver into operation? Whenever I call someone, it takes several seconds for my voice to cut in on the other end.

Good try, at least.

Yes, tried to push the Volume button, but it didn't work. Didn't appear to push in either, so who knows...

17:09 axon has been enhottenated! Yay, my first successful mission. For future reference, the phone that rings is the one with the phone book attached.

Preview Update (please don't worry about these until 9/14):

LOTS more coming up next week. Hopefully we hit more of the current ones this week to justify the increase in connections. Notables include new locations and much closer groupings.

12:27 32.736089 -117.149150 - San Diego Zoo (still a ?)
12:47 32.720605 -117.172889 - Star of India

13:44 32.772000 -117.186600 - USD (clarify)
This points to the University of San Diego, on Marian Way (the first intersection west of Santa Ana Drive, whose name I forget).

13:46 32.766961 -117.056902 - El Cajon 7-11
14:17 32.847369 -117.277297 - La Jolla
15:25 32.785099 -117.129132 - Northside McDonald's

16:37 32.763757 -117.197740 - Morena Blvd. (clarify)
On Morena Blvd., between Friars Road and the Linda Vista Road split. This area has many small businesses, if I remember correctly.

18:07 32.768651 -117.040577 - El Cajon Blvd. (clarify)
El Cajon Blvd., between 73rd and Harbinson. The location is ambiguous, but likely on the corner of ECB and 73rd.

18:29 32.690600 -117.245000 - Cabrillo National Monument

This is the second one I scouted, way back when. It appears to be between a Mexican food drive-in and a Mailboxes, Etc clone (can't remember the name ATM).

Well, how nice. At least they're making it easier to get to (i.e. less traffic). Make sure you don't need restrooms or snacks before going up there, since the place closes at 5:15PM (grounds are still open until sunset, however).

It just dawned on me that I should clarify that the axon listed as "El Cajon 7-11" is not actually located in El Cajon, but on El Cajon Blvd. In fact, it's only about 5 minutes away from the new El Cajon Blvd axon. Hopefully this new one will work better than the current El Cajon Blvd phone.

This is true, I updated the locations accordingly on page 1. We locals know how long ECB is anyway.

I'll wait on the other locations until more specific info comes in.

Yeah, it would be GREAT if a couple in North County would go up... since I work in Carlsbad (yeah... I commute from Santee every friggin' day!).

Work hard? Not really, or I would be taking massive amounts of time off from work Very Happy

I'm playing Navy this weekend, I'll attempt the La Jolla axon then... probably not until Sunday though.

As for El Cajon... sheesh, that part of town is weird. I have NO idea where El Cajon ends and either Santee or La Mesa begin... it's just all weird Smile

Updated.

There is one more chance to get 11:09. The others can be left, but that one is kind of important as that clip is not yet unlocked.

I wish I weren't in classes again so I could skip out and run around the county like I did on the 24th. Being a full-time student and a part-time worker stiiiiiiiiinks. Owell. I will stick with the position on cheerleader for San Diego
*wears Chargers helmet*

Great job team! It's not your fault the phones stink! Rah! Rah!

I think the 11:09 one is a bust due to the phone problems, sadly. I'm contemplating trying the La Jolla 16:21 axon, just so we're one less on the 777 needed :-p

Also did some scouting on the new locations - scouting report to follow.

9/14 Axon scouting report

OK, so... today after enhottenating the 16:21 axon, I decided that since I was in the area of the USD locations, and the La Mesa location is on the way home, that I would do some advance scouting for tomorrow. Here are my findings:

13:44 32.772000 -117.186600 - USD (clarify)
This points to the University of San Diego, on Marian Way (the first intersection west of Santa Ana Drive, whose name I forget).
- I'm thinking this one is in the Copley Library (although I really hope not). The library has 2 payphones down the first hall to the right immediately after you enter the library. Another (and probably better) location is Olin Hall, right across Marian Wy from Copley Library. Park in the big lot on the side and go in the side door - the payphone is right in front of you. On a side note, if you hit this axon, go up the street a bit and visit the Immaculata, if they're not holding services. It's one of the most beautiful chapels in San Diego, if not THE most beautiful. BTW, I didn't take pics at this location... didn't want to cause phones to ring in a library, and there were classes going on down the hall at Orin Hall.

16:37 32.763757 - Morena Blvd. (clarify)
On Morena Blvd., between Friars Road and the Linda Vista Road split. This area has many small businesses, if I remember correctly.
- I believe this one to be at the Morena/Linda Vista Trolley station (take Napa St to Riley and turn right - no road shown on the map, but it's there). There are 4 phones - 2 at each waiting area on the opposite side of the tracks, and 2 on the main waiting area (see pictures). If I were to choose one, I would choose the one furthest toward the tunnel going under Morena Blvd, on the other side of the tracks, since it's closest to the coords on Mapquest. However, there *is* a 7-11 on the corner of Napa St and Loma Vista, so...

18:07 32.768651 -117.040577 - El Cajon Blvd. (clarify)
El Cajon Blvd., between 73rd and Harbinson. The location is ambiguous, but likely on the corner of ECB and 73rd.
- This is right in front of the Rosendo Taco Shop on the corner of 73rd and El Cajon Blvd. There are 2 payphones right in front (see pictures).

Good luck tomorrow! I may be able to hit either La Mesa or Cabrillo on the way home, but I'll have to see.
