Hi L.S. -
Thank you so much for sharing this. I hope you don't mind that I have crossposted this at the Tweleve website where there is another active exploration of clues from the book:

Crossing fingers, I put it through ROT-X...no dice.
I'm working on it as a vigenere right now. I tried keys "eye", "clock", and "donut" to no avail. If we assume that the clue is a sentence, then it must start with an A or an I, meaning the key starts with an F or an X. I tried "XMARKSTHESPOT" and "FOUND" with no success... anyone else have any progress?

EDIT: Also means that whatever decodes the 13th letter must be a K or a S. I'm starting to lose faith in the whole "sentence" concept, because if the next to last word is an K or an I, what would the final 2 letter word be? "I AM" (key must contain 'kzh')or "A NO" (key must contain 'smf'. Assuming this is a looparound with f as the first letter of the key, any possible words fitting this - fascism, faddism - will leave the first three letters of the long word as WWD????) are the only possible logical statements I could think of...

ariock was there, and even he wasn't certain about the spacing around the S. The message could also be
Quote:
F BRSJ OIIUAYTS ZT
or
F BRSJ OIIUAYTSZT
or maybe even
F BRSJ OIIUAYT SZT
although the first is more likely, by his account. The message was displayed on a movie marquee, like you would see above a theater entrance. I would be surprised if Vigenere was used, as the book hasn't had any ciphers at all so far (that I've noticed), and the audience for the book probably wouldn't know anything more sophisticated than a simple substitution.

Just so everyone can see it for themselves here is a screencap of the clue on the marquee from ariock's video of the event.

To me, it looks like:
Code:
   F BRSJ
OIIUAYT S ZT
but I agree that the spacing is not clear due to the curvature.

EDIT: Editing my post with a link to a flickr picture that shows a better view of the clue on the marquee:

Lou! Great digging technique! Sorry you didn't get to keep the bucket. Sad I didn't realize you were a beekeeper! Are you planning to go to the Oakland and Berkeley events too? We should talk.

Also, completely off topic, are you following Elsewhere? There's a big event today in SF.

The folks over at hitcontest.com found someone from the L.A. event who said the clue was something like "clown knows" and they think it was actually "clowns nose."

Going on that they counted the number of ruler marks from the clowns nose and got five. Since it's all near the bulls eye they think it all means I-5, as in the interstate running through CA, OR, and WA.

Ariock - I see from Twitter you guys made a dig attempt this weekend. Care to share your thoughts on clues? It may have been covered in IRC but I was out of town this weekend.

@faeryqueen21 By "dig attempt" I should clarify that no actual digging was done. There was absolutely no information at the rest stop we went to that indicated that there was anything of any sort buried there. In addition, there are rattlesnake warnings around the stops, so we decided discretion was the better part of treasure hunting.

As an aside, hmrpita had a brilliant idea that we should bring along flowers to plant to give us a reason for digging around. As I said though, we had no idea where to dig.

Which page(floor) were you basing your clues on?

Apparently the clue was actually, "The clown plays her own game." (Source)

Anagram sleuths needed

I thought the wiki format lent itself best to the task of sorting anagrams associated with TCWAF. I just created pages for people to share ideas on the "Logan's Run Bath Mat" anagram and "Elevator Shaft".

I would be grateful for any thoughtful insights people are willing to share. Please use the following links to go to those pages and share your ideas.

http://clockwithoutaface.wikia.com/wiki/The_Clock_Without_A_Face_Wiki
http://clockwithoutaface.wikia.com/wiki/Logan%27s_Run_Bath_Mat_anagram
http://clockwithoutaface.wikia.com/wiki/Elevator_Shaft_anagram

- Sara

P.S. I apologize in advance for primitive formatting and lack of navigation links. These are the first wiki pages I've created, and I'm still learning how to use all the tools.

Will crosspost at Tweleve, HitContests.

Is that a hint about the balloon-dart game?

Revenge

coming up for air from the Halo:Reach beta (it's super awesome) had to post my findings!
Look at Floor 1. the top corner has a chalkboard with a tree on it, and a hole underneath it. I am sure that at least that number is hidden right there in front of a tree with a hole in it, if that's not the case for all of them!!!

good luck diggers, i'm in bungie country until i die from lack of sleep.(or they turn it off :p )

Montclair Public Library Clue:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Gideon was never born.

I received this clue directly from Eli after asking what the clue was. Since I was talking to the gentleman at the time, it felt wrong to shove a videocamera in his face to record the moment. I did reconfirm and then immediately tweet the phrase.

In addition, I was assured that the clue was very good, it would be almost completely unhelpful.

Good Luck, Junior Deducers!
