The old Computer Dn'D games had anti-pirating blocks that the three could be, Page->Paragraph->Line or word.
Next task is to find some PDFs of these.

Well like I said, if the second is paragraph, then in Turkle's book, we're looking for the 41st paragraph on that page, which would be odd.

But anyway, I'll check just in case.

Page->Paragraph->word (since I doubt we want to whole line) = Internet
Page->Paragraph->letter (Just in case) = h

And just to have them all in the same post:
page->line->letter = o
page->line->word = I'm

Alright so Tapscott's is covered.
Yeah, I'd just search for the PDFs.

I checked Turkle's books and indeed, there's no way the second the last number could be paragraphs, so I'm going to stick with the P Li Le or P Li W.

Turkle:
P Li Le = C
P Li W = conference

Wankel:
P Li Le = D
P Li W = Is "U.S.$1 Million" one word? If it is: Donation. If two: Million

Bonk:
P Li Le = T
P Li W = alone

Kapp:
P Li Le = V
P Li W = Expect

Next task: PDF hunting time?
--
Gah, it looks like alot of them are missing the needed page.
Might actually need to some actual foot work to a local work.
--

Looks like I got Gee's work.

Page->Line->Word.

Does the title count as a line?

Gee: (w/Title) Armies (W/o Title) Types
Robbins: Steps - You're
Bolter: Disapproval

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
_ Armies/Types Steps/You're Dispproval __ __ Expect Alone million/donation __ Conference.

It's starting to make sense, most likely talking the 'Educonference'.

Using Page->Line->Word and Nekomata or Poyson's finds when they fit.

Tapscott: I'm
-Gee: Concerned
*Robbins: You're
-Bolter: Disapproval
**-Aarseth: Danger
Rouzie: (Not online)
-Kapp: Expect
-Bonk: Alone
Wankel: Million
Perron: (Not online)
-Turkle: Virtual/Conference (If real-time is counted as 2 words it's Virtual)

- Means I found/verified them myself

* Possibly wrong

**This one was a pain see this for the end of page 115 and this for the continuation on page 116

Well I don't think that helped as much as I hoped it would. I'm not convinced this is the right method, it's probably word/letter. Anyway I haven't really followed this game and I'm not sure I'm going to but I was bored. If it is the incorrect method the links I included above link to the specific page so that should help find a different method.

Hm, looks like the only way to find the other two if the PDF is missing the page is to do some foot work to a library.

Still it we can get a vague outline of what it's talking about.

I emailed Erica with the solve of the "I Think I Got Hacked" image with quick note for her to be careful. This is what I got in return.

Interesting and, I have to admit, more than a little scary! Thanks so much for figuring it out. I suppose I can trust you to explain who I think the message refers to as "the hacker." The email thread below should make some sense.

Followed by a number of her email exchanges with a HaxxDragon. They were ordered from most recent to oldest, I reversed the order for ease of reading here.

i follow your blog. i'm just a concerned onlooker. i saw your post about your blog being hacked and i think you're into something serious. i can't decipher the message but if they hacked your blog on wordpress then they either hijacked ur password of they hacked the wordpress site. on one hand they have your personal info which is bad enough. on the other, they know enough to hack a professional server. either way you'd better be careful.

Thanks so much for your concern. It is, frankly, a bit creepy. Ha! I didn't think anyone read all my rants. I hope I'm not too boring. Thanks for your concern and for reading all my ramblings.

I only posted the screenshot because of how weird I thought it was. You think it's a code? I thought it was just a bunch of gobbledygook.

i'm sorry if my message sounded scary. i've just seen lots of hacks in my time and i know a bad one when i see it. i'm glad you were able to figure it out and get your posts back. what i can't figure out is why anyone would want to hack YOU. not that your blog is boring but it's not like you were blogging state secrets or starcraft beta codes or something. do you have some mad ex boyfriend or something? who'd want to hack you?

Not to be rude but it's a little strange emailing back and forth with someone I don't know. I appreciate your offers to help, really I do. But, in my world, you don't email so often with people who have anonymous email accounts. You know? That's how people go missing or end up on Dateline. LOL.

I'm sure you understand,
Erica

Doh! when u spend all of ur time on support boards and support chat you get used to talking to anonymous people. i guess it's a difference within the types of geeks you and i are.

I suppose you're right. Are you in IT? If you're used to working in support chat I would guess software support. Am I right?

kind of. i work in IT at a university, hence why i was following your blog. we just got finished installing our wifi network so i understand why your IT group wouldn't want to shut down your network just to appease a couple of faculty.

i'm going to use another email account to forward you some instructions that might help you lock down your blog a bit better so you don't get hacked again. i hope you don't mind. it's just a support doc that i send out a lot and i thought you might find it helpful.

Thanks! I followed those instructions. I appreciate the help. I expected a bit of backlash from other folks at my college if they saw my blog but I never expected to be hacked. What kind of dork am I to be installing security stuff on my blog on a Friday night? LOL

I split up with the last guy I dated seriously about six months ago and it was totally amicable so I can't imagine he'd want to break into my blog or have any idea how to do it for that matter. Is that something that angry super geeks do to one another?

On that note, is rescuing blogging damsels in distress something you do often or did you just feel bad for me in particular?

ha! it's not something i do often. your screenshot got my attention is all.

you're lucky to have split amicably. my last girlfriend stole the inventory from my WOW character when we broke up.

seriously, i think when i read your blog i identified with your struggles on campus. i try to help faculty around here and get the same responses you do. it's not that they don't want the help they just don't seem to have the time to learn so they rely on some blanket solution to solve it. this data blocker thing would be right up their ally. what a lame solution! i'm sure this guy selling it thinks he's doing the right thing but, geez, what a broken system if that's the best they can come up with. here i am with an MA trying to tell PhDs how to be better teachers. no wonder they don't listen.

Are you certain that Bolter is Disapproval? Because otherwise "I'm concerned you're in danger." would seem to be somewhere on the right track.

I've browsed around and I can't seem to find any one others by the guy in 2001.

I'm suddenly confused by the timeline here.

She claims that the hacker the encoded message refers to is this haxxdragon fellow? Well this is the part that confuses me, as the emails seem to suggest that Haxxdragon first contacted her AFTER her blog had been hacked and the message left, just look at the first email between the two:

He even mentions seeing the message already there when he first contacted Erica, so there's no way the message is referring to him.

Unless, he hacked it then used it as an excuse to start up a conversation as a ruse to gain her trust or something?

Unless someone is schizophrenic, we've got to keep our minds open to any ideas at this point. There could be another party we haven't heard of that this point all together.

I found one where he only wrote the foreword but again it didn't match with what we have. I'm not sure but I think the issue may be the version of the book on google books. If someone has a B&N account you should check there. The book on the B&N site has 248 pages and the one on google books has 232. Otherwise I have no clue why it doesn't fit, but I've quadruple checked it.

Erica's reply:

Quote:
That's a good point. Whoever hacked my blog must think that haxx has been nosing around but he only contacted me after I posted the weird message from my blog. I barely know this guy, just a couple of email exchanges and he's always been helpful but...now I don't know.
His website says something about a conspiracy. If he thinks that my lame-o blog being hacked by some nutter is a conspiracy then maybe he's not who I think he is.

And just a thought about the clue for Bolter,
But he had another book that was first published in 2000 called "Remediation: Understanding New Media"
Which, like Tapscott's book, may have an edition released in 2001.
