Dharma Wants You
The New Lost ARG

The Lost Experience has begun once again during this hiatus. This time, it involves a new incarnation of The Dharma Initiative. Since I don't see an update even from this year, here it is.

This is how, in chronological order, it has unfolded so far:

1)Octagon Global Recruiting: A television advertisement for the Octagon Global Recruiting website, octagonglobalrecruiting.com, was aired at the end of the last commercial break during "There's No Place Like Home, Parts 2 & 3" on May 29, 2008.

The television advertisement and site stated that Octagon Global Recruiting would hold a recruiting session in San Diego from July 24-27, 2008, and fan speculation relating to Comic Con being at the same time and location was later confirmed in a series of emails, with the group supposedly running aptitude tests as part of their recruitment drive.

As of August 2008, the website now redirects to Dharmawantsyou.com.

2) Comic-Con 2008 (Dharma Booth Video): The DHARMA booth video was shown at Comic-Con 2008 during the Lost panel. Dan Bronsen, one of six individuals who "passed" the DHARMA recruitment drive in association with Octagon Global Recruiting, secretly filmed the video presented to him by DHARMA employee, Hans Van Eeghen.

The video features Pierre Chang, the man who also uses aliases such as Marvin Candle. He makes a point of saying that Pierre Chang is his true name, officially revealing it for the first time. He also states that he will die in the Purge, apparently understanding that his video will be shown 30 years after it was filmed. He makes mentions George W Bush and the internet, showcasing knowledge of the future. It is unclear who his source is that obtained this 21st Century knowledge, but he does say that his source is "credible."

Dr. Chang mentions a "pinhole" that he is trying to keep open. This is notable because of the Kerr metric that Dr. Chang is studying. The Kerr metric is used to describe the rotation of black holes and how everything, including light, must rotate when near a black hole. When the Kerr metric is applied to Einstein's theory of general relativity, we get a wormhole (similar to the one in "Stargate"). According to Wikipedia: "Since the trajectory of observers and particles in general relativity are described by time-like curves, it is possible for observers in this region to return to their past." So, in theory, time travel is possible if one uses the Kerr metric.

Dr. Chang appears to converse with one, possibly two, men offscreen who are unidentified to date. The person(s) offscreen appear to have some knowledge of the things Chang is talking about. Three statements are heard being spoken to Chang. The first urges Chang to continue his statement when Chang mentions his source being credible. The second and third statements say that Chang's transmission attempt is useless and will not be seen and asks Chang about how to turn off the "thing." The identity of the person or persons speaking with Chang are never revealed onscreen.

Chang also addresses a woman named Lara (whose name was confirmed by Francois Chau himself) who is holding a baby that suddenly starts to cry during the recording or transmission of Chang's message. It is unknown at this point exactly who Lara is and what relationship she and the baby might have to Chang, if any.

3) Dharma Wants You: Dharmawantsyou.com is a website launched as part of the presumed new Lost alternate reality game running during the hiatus between Seasons 4 and 5. A newsletter email from Octagon Global Recruiting identified the site as a place where volunteers may be assessed for their eligibility to join their project. It has been stated that this will be available for a limited time only, though the specifics are not yet known.

The site opened fully late during the night on July 28th for Eastern, Mountain and Pacific time zones within the United States. However, it opened on July 29th for other time zones around the world, allowing fans everywhere to take the online test.

4) Dharma Initiative Recruiting Project: The Dharma Initiative Recruiting Project, also simply known as "the Project", is the official title ABC is currently using for the new alternate reality game taking place between Season 4 and 5 of Lost. As part of the Octagon Global Recruiting event, a legal document for prospective candidates revealed the title within the terms and conditions section. The ARG is developed by the Lost writers, in conjunction with Australian marketing agency Hoodlum (who were also behind the Find 815 game).

It should be noted that the document says ABC is "preparing" the game, meaning the ARG at this time may be in its preliminary stage. Also the shortened form "the Project" could potentially be legal jargon as part of the release form, which coincidentally mimics the longer title.

The game's current main site is now Dharmawantsyou.com. It is stated on the site that a series of aptitude tests will be run over the space of weeks for fans to play. There is also a leaderboard on the site, suggesting such subsequent tests will be scored. It is possible that coming clues will present themselves simply in the course of these tests (meaning this alternate reality game is more explicitly structured and similar in nature to Find 815 than The Lost Experience).

- 8/8/08 Glitch : On August 8th, a glitch was found on the Dharmawantsyou.com website. After the Intro Screen, if the page is left up and parts of the octagon will begin to shift in and out of the octagon. If you login to your account the center of the octagon will read "volunteer assessment commencing soon" and a similair glitch will occur causing random letters to flash in the center of the octagon. There are many different letter configurations that appear and shift throughout the course of the "glitch".

One of the configurations remains on the screen longer then the rest. These letters are aeeiiio dhmnnst which will spell "I am on the inside". The letters appear on screen in different sequences but always for a longer period of time then the other letter configurations. Other things noticed are the trapezoids glitching in an order and a rectangular box that appears during the anagram.

DharmaWantsYou.COm

As of August 19th:
* This is the scheduled day for the Volunteer Testing Program to begin.
* A "Download ID Card" option is available on the "My Profile" page. It downloads as a PDF file.
o When the barcode is scanned through a barcode scanner, the scanner shows the ID numbers.
o The repeating pattern on the background of the card appears to say "Dharma Initiative" and includes a small logo. It is also an autostereogram. Unfocusing one's eyes causes the fourth column from the left to stand out (à la Magic Eye).

For Now, That's All
