Guys, I might as well point something out: the trailer said "NEXT SUMMER" ... that's over a year away ...

So don't be expecting this to have daily updates. Expect this to be a long, drawn out process very similar to what went on with Cloverfield. I mean, remember in that campaign how often (or inoften) we got a new picture on the 1/18 site?

Yes but the point is that "Stop posting publicly" hugely and directly implies there's a post somewhere that we're missing.

And that's why I continue to search.

Well, yeah, you got a point there.

Why do I feel like this campaign's going to make the Cloverfield post count look trivial? Razz

you get theat message when you hit the print option right? could that mean they fear it being posted not in a blog but out in public? that was my first thought

This. Precisely. QFT.
And my last check had the file being downloaded 100% at about 11pm eastern May 13th.

Is there really any way to know when it will finish downloading. Even now it seems the speed isnt a constant. On top of the fact that what one person has downloaded on their screen isnt always what other people have on theirs. Is there any way at all that we can say when exactly it will be finished. I agree it will probably be on the 15th, unless something changes, meaning speeding up or slowing down dramatically. The time of day is what im getting at. I just dont thnk we can depend on those calculations to determine when on that date it will be done. Regardless of that, i cant wait to see what happens when the clock runs out. Its gonna be a long week

No, with the way the site currently loading data it is not an accurate counter. There are a couple of ways people are determining the date/time. You can calculate the time based on data before it started glitching. The data loading was acurate enough then to calculate by.

One other person (and possibly others) claims to have decompiled the Flash and discovered a file which told the exact date the countdown would end.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Thursday, May 13th at 11:00 pm EST

Ok, thanks. well if thats true, then it takes away the ambiguity of the countdown. otherwise , like i was saying , there really is no way of being sure when it will finish. Guess well have to wait and see when that time comes

This link was posted in IRC by Max

http://www.nap.edu/openbook.php?record_id=10450&page=39

It refers to STALOG, which was a study by USAF in regards to data automation. The Air Force was concerned over the likelyhood that computers containing base level information would degregate as the systems became older.

STALOG also happens to be mentioned several times during the PDP-11 sim boot sequence.

Code:

.BOOT DX1:DXMNSJ.SYS
RUN $EXEC
Continue Y/N?

 Super 8 hidden frames
super 8 flashing frames

Ive got pictures of those hidden frames(the white flashes on screen) from time to time on my blog you should check them out some of them are really cool looking and have to mean something its:
2scomplementofjohnnymoha(dot)spaces(dot)live(dot)com

Give your interpretation of them if you can make any. Other than that maybe it's just eye candy that was made for the trailer and has no meaning but I think it has to fit in somehow.

and he's right, JJ DID say he wanted something different. We've been looking at 500RADS as something that was just trying to appear as Cloverfield 2 viral. But what if Super 8 and Cloverfield took place in two different universes? and HAL/Thad/Sakura are in a universe where the super 8 incident actually happened, and Cloverfield was a movie

Hey guys, first time poster I hope I can help with this ARG. I have been a closet ARG fan for years. My first time was with the xbox360/halo one! Anyway, enough of my life story.

First off, the "SWF" file isn't downloading anything. Secondly, to those of you who already know this - yeah it's a rehash but I just want to keep those of us who were out of the loop up to date.

Technically speaking, your browser does in fact contact the server. It reaches the time.php endpoint which is used for time verification. This protects the SWF from the user manipulating his/her system clock to a date in the future - thus spoiling the surprise at the end of the countdown.
The network traffic you are seeing is simply a byproduct of the "beat" in which Timer is triggered - The Timer being the interval in which the local SWF asks the server for time verification, thus changing the "Bytes Loaded" message. The incrementing value of bytes is based on a rather simple math formula that links together, the "driver numbers" and the countdown end date.

For all who care, there were two hard-coded date values in the SWF.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
13/5/2010 20:00:00 PDT and 6/5/2010 17:00:00 respectively.

The value
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
"134640 Bytes Loaded"
is hard-coded too.

With that being said, leaving your browser running will NOT do anything. The only ways to update a live SWF without leaving/reloading the page are Sockets or a loader with a hard-coded string to the update mechanism. Neither of which are present in this SWF.

There's also no other visual imagery, audio or visual present in this current version of the SWF. Nor can it make a server connection (presently) to get any when the timer is up.

I know many of you have already seen this, but here is what happens when you set a break-point on the remote time verification endpoint.

I hope this helps some of the new people to this. And for those who already know it. Sorry for the re-hash!

RADS portion?

wildoofsmeg wrote:
OK I know that the 500 Rads blog has been thought to be OOG but take a looky at this http://cloverfieldmovieforums.com/showpost.php?p=636645&postcount=137

I would also add to this that on the screen at http://www.scariestthingieversaw.com/ where it asks "Press any key to continue...", one can see that the 7th line down states:

"LOADNM: .RADSR /$LOAD/".

[I got a screenshot and highlighted the portion to make it easier - am I able to upload it from my computer?]

While the data was flicking through, the RADS portion jumped out at me. No matter how OOG the RADS blog appears, I just think it is unlikely that the flagship text of the blog appears like this in the RemoteView 2.7 by mere coincidence. It's not really a common string of letters is it? What the line means etc. I am unsure.

Note: I understand the sentiments that 500 RADS is considered OOG. Additionally, if this has been discussed earlier I apologize; I did have a look through the thread but may still have overlooked something.

Just a couple of things I'd like to point out:

The pickup in the trailer for Super 8 is a 1964-66 Chevy Fleetside 'small window' truck, not a 1975 Ford F250 as appeared in Close Encounters. I'll be able to narrow it more with a better look and more research.

A picture posted of a mailbox near Area 51 proves nothing when the first mentions of possible alien subject matter in the film were posted first on Vulture on May 4th, then that article was picked up and commented on at AICN on May 5th. It's no great leap to shoot for Area 51 when aliens are involved. That's about like guessing that a movie about spies might involve the CIA. Any person as obsessed as that blogger would probably not miss those bits of info about Super 8 popping up. You and I probably weren't aware, because we have these odd things called lives.

Meanwhile, I got to see the teaser before Iron Man 2 tonight, and we really need that HD version to show up online soon. The bootleg also seems to have the first part a bit different than what I saw. It seems to have missed a little chunk of the very first train shot. Probably not critical stuff, but enough to make me sure we need a better version to work with.

Audio

Has anyone tried to examine the audio, which is "playing" at the super8-movie site? I mean the super 8 camera sounds. I don't have software for this. But there might be some clues, I think. Btw, hi to all.

Yeah that's what I thought too but I figured I'd keep a close eye on it. On another subject, one of the boxes has CBCData written on it. I stripped the ata part and googled CBCD and found this...

http://upload.wikimedia.org/math/2/d/6/2d6da3f91f0d035af2973579095feea3.png

It explains how to read CBCD Lab tests which are blood tests to find different types of bacteria etc. Could this lead to somewhere where Area 51 staff were testing on the creature to see if it could be contagious in some way. Sort of like clovie with the parasites that made you explode?

I realize a few things were already said about the "Copywrite CBCData" but wanted to add an addition of a few things I had researched about it.
@RAD24 Ironically when I first searched CBC I did find some 'el oh el' searches about birds as well but I also was able to find this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Block_cipher_modes_of_operation
(sorry for it being wiki I thought it had some decent info though)

It goes about explaining different types of ways to "encrypt" messages. Such ways include ECB, CBC, OFB and CFB along with a few more 'modern' encrypts. Particularly "CBC" standing for Cipher-block chaining, it's usually used for 'longer' confidential messages because of its ability to provide padding.

(Not saying that Yiddleja is not also on a lead, just coming from a bit of a programming background and the site seem to be revolving around top secret data and remote messaging I feel this might possibly be something to look into especially if something that becomes available to the public via May 13th needs decrypting)

What particularly sparked my interest, was the way ECB works. (if you reference the page it shows an example through a picture) Where the image itself has basically had a 'noise' filter added on through means of code, in which one knowing the key could unlock.

-Anyways it also goes about explaining how CBC works and in fact there is a encrypt and a decrypt formula to it. The mathematical decrypt below:

I guess because of this process of encrypting sometimes theres a setback in which the user must go through a different method often times due to the message requiring "padded to a multiple of the cipher block size." In which the user must resort to Block ciphertext stealing. More info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Block_cipher_modes_of_operation
Which brings the user into a 7 step process of math filled fun! (oh how exciting)
I can only hope they do not expect us to decode something of this sort. But in case they do, the links go over the various steps in the process.

@@geezyj (Page20) about seeing the person holding the camera, I defiantly see it as well. With the highlight closest to the left being the light bouncing off the figures hand, and the square box with the extreme highlight being the metal from which the light is highly reflective. And the other highlight found between the two the figures neck. But then again alot of photos could be playing tricks. But I'll say I do agree~

Also something I didn't see mentioned here, other than Kosmopol stating the photo itself looked like a face. A guy (Nelson) on http://www.super8news.com/ under the 'Mystery Face Near The End of The Trailer?' commented on how he had thought perhaps the 'alien' or 'monster' was already shown in the trailer. He then went about posting a link of the mirrored photo ( http://rambo09.deviantart.com/art/Super-8-JJ-abrams-ALIEN-163366625 ) either way still interesting and I believe worth giving a look Wink

Hope that helped. I was a little late on the Clovy ARG. After seeing Ironman last night and watching the trailer I sure don't want to miss out on this one!

BTW: When I first went to the Scariesthingeversaw site, I was given a whole bunch of prompts until it just continued to give me "yes" questions. I typed Y and enter around 50 times and still gave me nothing, now when visiting the site I still receive the same message as below:

Any suggestions on how to get the DL to start? (Using Mac OS Snow Leopard btw)

I think it's just to keep the source tidy and help people looking at it to focus on the "main" updatable parts (it's unlikely that the segments in HEX will ever change during the whole ARG. Infact it's important that they don't ever change or else the site analytics/compatibility might break)

Fascinating post. I think it's easier for PMs to just replace the SWF entirely when the time comes. That would leave no room whatsoever for unwanted leaks prior to that date.

and @Narii,

That's hilarious! I have no idea why it wouldn't let you continue. Does it still do that? Maybe you were trying to access it while they were updating the ticker timing bug (which seems pretty stable/hard to advance for me now)

Just noting that "Find the Crack" was from last week's episode of Fringe.

It was a plot item, a pen, belonging to a guest character, then given as a gift to a main character.

Sorry if someone else has already pointed this out.

The more I look at that blog, the more I think he just randomly samples anything J.J. Abrams, puts up some vague text and pictures and voila.

Wow, now I am starting to see how lucky I was not to learn anything about the Cloverfield Viral until about 2 weeks before the movie premiere. With that being said, I think everyone should take a deep breath, and just wait for the 13th, consider yourself lucky it is only a 7 day countdown and not a 7 week or 7 month one.

The print screen does indicate that there is more to be found, but frankly without additional info , I doubt it will be.

On a side note has anyone with mad Google-fu done a search for a blog or website belonging to D. (presumably Dan) Morris?
