So, the emulator is doing some pretty strange stuff now... I've left it on continuously since yesterday, and am still only at 60,182 bytes loaded on line 8. But then it gets a little weirder:

[2] Previously accessed
[3] Previously accessed
[4] Previously accessed
[5] Previously accessed
[6] Sectors loaded
[7] Sectors loaded
[8] Accessing File List B4 - 60182 of 134640 Bytes Loaded

Has this happened to anyone else? I can link a screencap as an attachment if anyone wants to see for themselves.

Also, since the official site runs with Flash Player, has anyone tried right-clicking and rewinding and fast-forwarding the camera animation? You end up with just the camera sound and then a hazy, black outline of the "broken camera." Here's a pic, just to explain:

EDIT:
I went back and tried again, and got a better definition screencap. Basically, it's just the camera sans animation, but there still may be something there. I have Gimp, so I have at least a passable way of filtering the image for any hidden goodies. Anyone with Photoshop can most assuredly do a better job.

Once you pause the image, you can press Fast Forward to start it frame-by-frame. The sound goes, but with no image. There are exactly 45 frames before the rolling text begins.

@ndemeter
Oh, yes it sounds reasonable... Those times they had this huge paper rolls, right?

@Banemore
The actual essense of a classic ARG is the preventing of breaking into the meta level - from both sites. At Cloverfield already they were aware of this problem and if you spoke with Slusho Six (oups, another Six, like Oceanic, hehe), they always replied - but only in case if you didn't mention meta keywords, like "Monster", "Clovefield", "JJ Abrams" etc.

This is btw the problem of all gamejacks and of many fan fiction - they mix meta level with the fictional level. Perhaps they just want to attact everybody interesting for these keywords to their story - and that's the pity of all those pseudo-IG-blogs. They have perhaps imagination and ideas, but they haven't trust in the audience, and this ends in implosion.

Anyway, good viral marketing can distinguish between the product and the story, and the better they do it, the more succes they have. Of course, we know, that this campaign is made for the JJ Abrams' movie "Super 8". But this knowledge should remain in background, say: in this campagn shouldn't appear keywords like "Super 8" or so.

It's like Star Trek ARG - there were plenty of Romulans speaking with us, but they hadn't any clue about Star Trek movie or series, also didn't that dude from Paris, who was actually an Earthling and should know about it. Outfading of such parts or ouf collective memory is the art of making good ARGs.

Oooohhh, okay. Yeah, once I took a step back from it all I realized my coffee-induced spazziness, and saw the assumptions I was beginning to make. Such as, I was assuming that the owner of the website at thescarriestthingieversaw.com was communicating to us (being the audience) which could be totally be wrong, and is really addressing someone else entirely. It is called an ARG for reason, I suppose.

Thank you for explaining! Very Happy

Sidenote...

Having extensively followed the Cloverfield ARG, I can't help but feel Super 8 somehow still has some (finite) connection to Mr. Grumpy Pants.

To me, the fiery train crash is reminiscent of the Tagruato ship exploding right before the SoL's head is hurled across town. Remember the teaser trailer?

Cloverfield: Nighttime, roar, explosion, fireball, SoL's head
Super 8: Nighttime, crash, fireball, roar, mysterious face

I'm sure... actually I *know* I'm just grasping at straws here (hope can be *so* cruel), but I don't believe JJ's denials just yet... There are a few parallels that keep me wondering.

What's the deal with "Previously Accessed" and "Sectors Loaded?" You guys keep uploading these screen caps and some of you have Sectors Loaded or Previously Accessed. I currently have 7 previously accessed and 1 Sector Loaded (which is [8]). Is this the same for all of you or what?

I wonder if its something to do with the number of hits the site gets as I'm on number 9 with 61255 bytes loaded, and every time I refresh, it goes a bit further.

Also, can someone work out the red letters in the lens at http://www.super8-movie.com/ They look different to the ones in the trailer

Got this on Page 8.

EDIT: Looking back at it, it seems strange to me that the date and title lines are cut off, while the rest of it looks so neat and complete.

Well, I think, it's just JJs style. I mean, the colours and effects of exploding train were mostly the same of the explosion seen by Rob and Co. from the roof. It's perhaps, a faible of JJs for explosions at the night.

Ah, btw JJ Abrams and explosions, check this out:

Now THAT'S funny! Laughing

Yes, you're probably right. Like I said, grasping at straws, obsession bubbling up, etc, etc, etc. Very Happy

PDP-11

So, this might help with some insight into the nature of the "so-called countdown" on scariestthingieversaw.com:

The PDP-11 required external disks to run its operating system and load all external data. From the commands that are run just prior to the "countdown", it looks like it is loading the data from an external disk into memory one byte at a time. Also, based upon the commands that are seen when forcing the SWF to fast-forward to the end-date, I would say that once the external data are loaded, those commands will execute a program in memory that would give us more information, or maybe some black and green ASCII video (that would be awesome!).

I totally agree with your above post. It's a computer from the 1970's and it's "downloading" new content. It's just taking a long long time. It's funny it's listed as bytes instead of MB or KB. We are time travelling computer logging... Or watching an incident all over again.

I believe the desktop we are viewing behind the big screen will become active once everything is loaded. I think the remote viewer is just loading up all the files on the desktop, so perhaps the email, printer, and notepad icons will become available.

That means we'll be looking at emails and notes from D. Morris' desktop, which is pretty sweet.

At least TPTB aren't doing what Valve did prior to announcing Portal 2. People were actually digging up old 56k modems just to access a Telnet server. Here we get to see old technology without actually having to own it.

Keep up the good work guys, this is definitely gonna be a blast to mess around with this summer!

Hi everyone, new & old Smile

I moved this thread to its own, separate forum in the Chaotic Fiction section, as, going by previous projects of the Master of Mystery JJ Abrams, Super 8 will probably spawn a LOT of speculation.

You have your own forum to use now, so feel free to create new threads on relevant subjects. Do take a moment to read the forum guidelines at the top of the forum though, and remember to Search before posting, to make sure you're not posting anything that's already there.
