Cranberries and mythology

Below is one reference to cranberries and what they symbolize in mythology. I'm still searching for more.

“Berry” is the term generally used to describe the small, sweet fruits that grow on bushes or smaller plants, often in clusters. Some fruits are thought of as berries but aren’t classified as such by botanists. Huckleberries, for example, are in the stone fruit category. Berries have found their way into literature and mythology because their predominantly red color was thought to symbolize life, or sometimes even the blood of mythical creatures.

SPEC: Cranberries/Des Doyle/Pitcher plants

See here for my post SPEC: Purpurea regarding pitcher plants & cranberries - this may tie in as it refs an article about how cranberry fields are threatening the pitcher plant (pic of pitcher plant [Sarracenia Purpurea] described as cranberry plant on Businesses page of AglauraNJ site)

I think they tie together somehow; they are threatening the Purpurea...? Remember that Dale wrote these pages before he was committed; Sam was just maintaining them as instructed, and the picture is still there although I seem to recall that Sam has been notified of the 'mistake'.

And is Des Doyle not one of the oldest residents - the library graffiti was witnessed by two of the oldest residents in Aglaura - I think he may come into this a bit more than just being a farmer. I'd like to hear more about the path into the Pine Barrens beside his place, and the weird occurrences leading to the delay in opening it.
