I was running a game...
...but something horrible happened.

I was running an ARG that I'd planned for a few months, but something really horrible happened to one of the people who was working with me, something I'd rather not discuss. Now, I no longer have access to the servers where the game sites were run from, and I effectively cannot run the game. I guess I could restart it on a free server, but it just isn't the same. Should I tell people here at Unforum what happened? (Minus what the horrible thing was.) I promise this itself isn't an ARG.

Assuming you can't cobble together all of the emails or whatnot to do some kind of an in-game announcement or, at a minimum, clueing-in one of the players who can give the community a heads-up...
Posting an announcement of some kind related to the game and giving any details about ending/postponing/moving the game would probably be a welcome action on your part.
Consider any legal, criminal or moral constraints in your decision as well.

You could always find some ingame reason for the project to go underground for a significant amount of time (a good example could be, in a mystery/scary ARG - having a tweet or email message simply stating "I think I need to lay low for a while, maybe if I cease contact I'll lose them", till such a time when your lost member can be replaced or rejoin the team.

Then you can resurface when you are ready, but people will know that the case is not closed - and you don't have to pull back the curtain.
