He mentions the film quite a bit in earlier tweets (as a JJ/Spielberg fan) so red herring I'm afraid

I feel that the PDP-11 and everything in it is historical in context (taking place before the events in the trailer).

Given that, the message we found "Stop posting publicly" is not from someone in 2010, but from someone in 1977 or 1979 to D.Morris or whomever is accessing the PDP-11 at that time.

Where would someone post publicly in 1979?

Maybe we can find these prior "public" postings. Perhaps a usenet of some sort. What would they have been posting about?

In 1979? The news paper would be the only public forum I could think of. So perhaps the code that we found in that newspaper was the what the "Quit Posting publicly" message was referring to?

I just can't believe that there is nothing more to get from that site.
Why would it specifically say "dual tape" and later ask to "mount" a device.
I think that second tape has to be mounted in some way.
I searched through the first google finds on the term "pdp-11 command mount" and came over these:
easier one - http://www.dbit.com/putr/putr.doc
more technical one - http://www.dbit.com/pdf/e11wdemo.pdf

So, they tell that it more or less follows common x86/DOS-syntax and your mount-command would look something like:
MOUNT DX1(maybe an ":" at the end)
which is exactly what the volume/partition/device is called that we access to get to the newspaper stuff. You can read it in the simulator.
So, I really want to believe that this is only the content of the first tape or "DEV1:" how it is also called in the simulator which contains the .dat, .wrk, and .txt files AND that there is other data on the second tape in this dual tape device.
I tried every possible input at the "DEVICE"-prompt, like "EX2", "EY2", "MOUNT DX2", "MOU DY2" and all mixes of those but didn't get it. Maybe, because I can't write a ":" in that simulator because my keyboard is german layout? Can anyone else type in a ":" in some prompt there?

Man, I really wished there were some more clues on that site Smile.

I read people saying other people have looked over the source code and found nothing that would lead on from the "device"-screen but how sure is their conclusion? Is this definite or like, maybe?

Tried all of the combinations above, none of them worked.

Well, thanks for trying. On the other hand, I already did. Every possible combination, like I said. Except for trying a controller prior/or different to "X". Well, I did try "Y".
You can find out about the "controller" on the links above. My english is good but not my mothertongue so I may have overlooked something in the instructions.
Can you type/enter a ":" at some prompt on scarriest...? Just use the first prompt to check.

You can type a ":" at all prompts, but does not do anything...

Has anyone checked Google Sky and the moon for any clues? Would probably help if we had a reference point on the ad moon

This reminds me too much of Portal's viral,
http://www.aperturescience.com/

The opposite of posting publicly would be posting underground.
maybe this new print message is from the same that sent the
newspaper message.

What questions do we have?
At least, which ones that shouldn't be posted publicly?

To you guys who are asking themselves why we should "not post publically":
Just watch "The X Files", Season 03, episodes 08+09+10.
Don't know if this is just a funny coincidence or whatever but it definitely has some "equality"(?) Sorry, bad english.
Maybe, you may not want to view those episodes as they may contain spoilers on the movie, although I, off course, do not know/doubt it.
But it gives a guess on why we should not "post publically".

Edit: EP08 is not really necessary but it gets you into the vibe Wink

File names
(could have been mentioned earlier, but we'll see)

I know the newspaper pages were intended to be printed out directly from the pdp-11 site, without actually getting the digital file. Since we did decompile the .swf and get the file, I don't know if this is in play or not, but the file names of the 2 page images in the forum file library are "image 105" and "image 108". Has this been looked into? It could perhaps be something to do with the pdp, or another site or something. I would imagine those are the original file names, I don't know why someone would change them to those names to post them. Just a thought, is it too far out there?

Seconded!
The program is a PDP-11 SIM (simulator) and, although is running in 2010, maybe is simulating a certain period of time that PDP-11 was used. And the simulator is running in front of a message already there (the print request, wich is about a file already written).
So, maybe it's possible someone received that file in the 70's as a threat.

Right, we decompiled the swf and we know there is nothing left to be done there. We have all the files pulled out of it, for now.

I'm not sure if more files are locked up in the website's index, but I doubt it. They will probably update the files as the story progresses.

I feel like there is another website we're missing out on. I'm not sure what it could be, but I feel like there may be more clues in either the newspaper, printout, trailer or some of the other information we've been given.

Either that or we just have to wait until the RocketPopeteers site opens or we get something in the mail.
