First of all, just updating my book-tour clue list. Thanks to the solvers of the rail fence clue, and thanks to JustMorse for reporting the most recent clue.

Quote:
#1: The clown plays her own game.

#2: Fritz is just a boy.

#3: Gideon was never born.

#4: Burnt Norton

#5: The best defense is a good rail fence. (used to solve #2)

#6: Look out for the donut hole.

#7: Fiveway is the wrong way.

Second, thanks to doublecross for being a voice of reason. I agree that the most simple interpretation is often the right one, and have also been focusing on State/Hwy/Mile for now, until future events suggest otherwise. I took a look at the shading on the floors on Floor 6 as well, but couldn't get anything out of it. The checkerboard section also made me wonder if that ties into the chess idea again, but it's not 8x8, so...

The Clock Without a Face "timewaster" book
news and updates

I was thinking of suggesting we move this thread into Timewasters, because it is not an ARG, and is no longer newsy or rumory.

Well, there is just a bit of news. Some intrepid members of Unfiction went out and dug up one of the 12 treasures this weekend! More on that later...

And today from 4:00-6pm there is another book signing event, this one in NYC and featuring the artist for the first time in addition to the two authors.

Details -- http://www.booksofwonder.com/events052310B.asp
These book events have all been fun presentations, with the authors remaining "in character" as much as possible, being merely the emissaries for Gus Twintig, the fellow who documented the scenes and events at the Ternky Tower. I highly recommend it if you can attend, and you can report back with any special spoken clue they promise to offer.

How exciting! Is there any news on how the location was found?

Was it indeed the emerald on the 11th floor (Ida Mayfield)? Not sure, since I saw a report at one of the book signings that the emerald number did not necessarily correspond to the floor number.

As reported on the official site, the emerald was found near Modesto, California. That means that the highway is likely to be 99, 132, 108 or 215.

According to posts at tweleve (a post there also from catherwood), the emerald was found on I-5 at a rest stop near the 445 mile marker (near I-5 and I-580).

Most posters have thought that the clues came from the 3rd floor (Rosa Tse-Levy), but the #11 emerald was the one that was found.

Obviously catherwood and ariock and hrmpita can chime in but this is my understanding of how the emerald was found:

From the clues on Rosa Tse-Levy's floor - Floor #3:

State: CA (All of the California artist drawings)
Highway: 5 (The Chinese kanji symbol for 5)
Mile: 445 (The reversed 445 in the mirror)

So they went to the rest area at Exit 445 on Interstate 5 in California, where they found a tree that had a marker on it with a shape on it that was a pentagon like the book, and that's where they dug, as indicated by the diagram on the blackboard in the book. And yes, number 11 was found using clues from Floor 3, so the numbers/floors don't correspond.

Congrats to them!!!!

Thanks. That is even more straightforward than I had thought, never mind than some other people have suggested.

Is there any way to know that a number is the highway number (other than perhaps it is large, or a particular colour, orange in this case) or the mile number? Seems a little arbitrary.

Given that information I would put money on the Sixth Floor emerald being along highway 45 in Ohio. It is 96 miles long, so not that many places to look! Perhaps near mile 20 (shaded planks in main room). There are other possibilities but they look less likely to have been created by the residents for the purpose, to keep with the theme.

Heads up, two more were found within the past 24 hours!

A number '4' was unearthed in Virginia (from the clues on the First Floor), and just a few minutes ago, someone tweeted that they found the number '3' -- with photographic evidence

Summary so far

Yes, it seems that three have now been found. Once the difficulty level was set by the first one, perhaps the others will fall more easily.

Emerald 11, Third Floor
State - CA (links with pictures in kitchen)
Highway - 5 (large Japanese symbol for 5)
Mile - 445 (445 in mirror)

Emerald 4, First Floor
State - VA (links with portraits)
Highway - 81 (newspaper is from 1981)
Mile - 262 (paisley pattern on rug)

Emerald 3, Eleventh Floor
State - WA (portrait of George Washington above bed)
Highway - 90 ($90 in bills on table)
Mile - 89 (price tag on icebox)

Ah, we were going to go after the 1st floor one next. Too late! Tomorrow is the soonest we could possibly go due to my boyfriend's work schedule, so I hope we don't miss our chance.

Thanks for the update! It's interesting that as soon as people figured out that the solutions weren't all convoluted and wacky, that these began to be found...

You know what's funny? All along I thought those "convoluted and wacky" solutions were a ridiculous waste of time and I ignored them, but now that people are finding things to be straightforward, I kind of hope that the mad speculators will be vindicated. Perhaps some floors are more hairy than others.

I suspect the #12 will be more difficult to solve, since it's worth the most.

I am also a little disappointed at how simple the solutions are, so let's hope that some are more difficult than those already found. Incidentally, no offence intended to those who have found emeralds so far - sorting the genuine clues from all the noise was no mean feat and gets much respect from me.

The method seems to be:

Find one or more images near each other that suggest a state.
If there are only two obvious numbers, you're in business - one will be the highway and one will be the mile.
If there are fewer or more than two obvious numbers, it's a little more tricky!
