Looking for a story writer.
For an ARG in progress. (already started).

PM me if you're interested, it's about a betrayal mystery.
Cheers,
James.

Highly recommend you have the story fleshed out (including alternative arms if your players do something unexpected) BEFORE you start your ARG.

Read up on past successful story-filled ARGs and then the PM chat logs to find out that good PMs have the story well designed BEFORE they started. A great example would be labfly's Sammeeeees (see my signature link) - she had her storyboard and all her characters in place, working on it for more than SIX MONTHS before she launched.

I cannot agree with Kona more. For my last game I spent the better part of a year writing the story before even considering how to make it in to a playable game. Once I had a good story finding a creative way to tell it through the ARG was relatively easy.

You can have the greatest websites and puzzles ever made in the history of ARGs if the story isn't compelling no one will play for long. On the other hand if you are telling a good story that draws people into your world you will be forgiven a lot of small cosmetic flaws with sites and puzzles.

If your game has already started I would encourage you to find a way to place it on hold until the writing is finished. Nothing upsets players more than the feeling that the PM is making up stuff on the fly.

Best of luck to you.

I have to disagree and while I'm not one of them, there are players who are perfectly happy with games done in the J J Abrams, "Lost" style.

Walking away from a game because it got too hard, though. That'll be met with wrath and fury you can't even imagine.

I don't think that was the issue being addressed. PM's need to have a definite idea about where the story is going to go (beginning, middle and end and especially the puzzles), before they go "live" with a game. Many many of the "failed" ARGs are from lack of planning. Planning out the story arc and possible directions the story can go ahead of time really helps make an ARG successful because of the time factor involved in actually running a game.

Granted I've only been in a couple of games behind the scenes, but having everyone on the team knowing what to expect in terms of where thegame will go is a priority item. LOST is a TV show where the players don't give input that directly and immediately affect the story. PM's can adapt a story in response to player input, but the main thread of the story should be in place before you begin to run it live or else the PMs are left floundering about what to do next.
