[SPEC] Coincidences & References
Things we found related to other ARGs, movies, easter eggs etc

Hey all.
Found an article in a brazilian paper comparing Abrams to Spielberg and there were some things both did in their movies that I thought I would point it here, but couldn't find a thread to fit. So, I created this one.

Sorry if someone pointed it already!
If so, this thread is not completely useless. We can drop things we found on the net that maybe is relevant, but don't fit in other threads.

Well, back to the article. There are train references in at least 3 of the Spielberg movies:

    E.T. - Home invasion scene:
In this scene, there is a train that starts automatically right after the astronauts enter the house. Telekinesis, maybe?

    YouTube: Link

Close Encounters of the Third Kind - TV News:
News telling about a train accident, that was a cover for an alien mothership landing.

    YouTube: Link

Duel - Truck pushing a car scene:
A car almost gets hit by a train. Jump to 1:16.

    YouTube: Link

In the end of the article, it was said that Spielberg started recording train accidents with his toys using a super 8 camera Razz

In Close Encounters, there's also a scene of model trains being wrecked. Spielberg actually did those as a child and he credits them with inspiring his film making career. Not surprising we see so many trains as toys and real ones in his films.

I find very cool the "abc" as broadcaster in Encounters. Not as Spielberg tie-in, but as JJ Abrams with LOST and another productions.

I'd love if this news would be used or remastered for this new project, like "Mysteries of the Universe" or so.

If it helps: Spielberg has stated many times that his earliest influence by films was Cecil B. DeMille's THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH from 1952 — the climax of which features a collision of two circus trains. Spielberg's quote about the film, made while accepting the Cecil B. DeMille award from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association last year, was "My fate was probably sealed that day in 1952."

Reportedly he recreated the scene with model trains much to the annoyance of his father, which prompted Spielberg to film his model train wreck so he could watch it again and again (and emulate DeMille's scene).

Indeed trains have been featured in many of his films, especially in CE3K which Abrams pays homage to in SUPER 8. In fact, this teaser trailer for SUPER 8 also pays direct homage to DeMille's train crash scene, including a man driving his car onto the tracks and driving headlong into the approaching engine.

I wrote an article comparing all this in photos, but as a new forum member (reading along for a short while though), I hesitate to link to my own work here in my first post on the boards. Will provide pics or link if there is interest in the comparisons/homages going on here.

Meanwhile, the layers of influences abound even in this teaser trailer. I can only imagine what more will be revealed.

After the train wreck scene, one of the freight cars that breaks open contains LIONS.
And they are HUGE!
I've been working on a mash-up of the scene with the S-8 trailer for the past week! Hopefully, it will eventually find its way onto my YouTube page. But, I've been feeling very sick.

/edit: please ignore this attempt at a gamejack, thanks. -ndemeter

For me, references to Cloverfield and its viral saturate what we've experienced so far concerning Super 8.

High level military involvement
-Throughout the trailer for Super 8, there is direct mention of USAF involvement.
-Cloverfield began with a notation that the footage was recovered by the US Department of Defence.
-When we link this with the information we've prised out for the Super 8 ARG, high-level military involvement is relevant to both.

The strength of the (creature?) at hand
-The creature in Super 8 is strong enough to presumably bash its way through iron/steel/other ferrous metal.
-The Cloverfield monster could break buildings and crush tanks.

The idea of footage perhaps being caught real-time by passers-by
-Although not confirmed, there is a strong line of thought that Super 8 refers to the film which could suggest the events it will depict were captured by that style of camera.
-In Cloverfield the events were narrated through a camcorder of sorts.

Oblique references to the Cloverfield ARG
-This is where, perhaps, my longing for a Cloverfield 2 gain the better of my judgment.

-The 6 flavors of the Rocket Poppeteers harking back to "you can't drink just six!" for Slusho and Cloverfield.

-The random quote on the Tagruato site by Ganu who evaded capture saying [paraphrase] "they tried to hold down my hands...but I can point to the stars" - exactly what those two characters in the Rocket Poppeteers logo are doing. http://www.tagruato.jp/headlines.php?story=news_08_01_18

Although in the end, it's probably all coincidence.

Well Ras, a moderator or admin can tell that simply by checking the IP address used when posting the comment. I would imagine that if it weren't you they would have spoken up and said something. Judging by the fact that it was edited to show it was you simply shows me that they matched your IP address to that guest post and further proved that you are trying to start trouble by making OOG references and creating pages as gamejacks. Just please put your foot in your mouth for once and leave, it would really be best for all of us.

Dude! Bang Head
I know all about Internet connections and IP addresses.
My connection is shared by two other people in this household.
(they have zero intention of following this "viral" and have become sick of my "discussions" as they are not fans of either J.J. or anything in relation to MONSTERS - they thought they could play head games with me)

I have already had this discussion with the mods and admins, (as well as my roomies).
All I ask is the comment be removed or credited to the right person.

1) The mods have asked that we "play nice" and not BASH each other.
2) I am not personally involved with any supposed "game jack."
3) Any involvement I have had with Paramount (and its associates) are no longer allowed to be discussed on these forums. <-------That's a period.

Actually you did give your consent by using these forums. Here is a quote from the Terms of Service: "The administrators and moderators of this forum will attempt to remove or edit any generally objectionable material as quickly as possible."

You agreed to that when you opened an account here. You were also pointed there by me at least once.

Just so you know, we will always add to the post what we edited on it. This is because we don't want to lose the trust of the users. We are not the internet police but when we have to step in we would like to do so as transparently and openly as possible.

Then it sounds like you need to either password protect your computer or have a serious discussion with your roomies or both. Sounds like you have addressed the issue so hopefully this is behind us. And in case someone else is wondering about this:

"Users of the Unfiction forums, whether registered or guest, are not to post under more than one identity."

Again, from the ToS. As you can see we are not making this up and this is nothing new that we concocted recently to go after anyone. Those have been the rules for a while.

I have removed your formatting of the above to make a point: Read the above statement without any italics of font size difference and see how it reads. Myself and perhaps many others read this as "I am a movie studio insider and I know things you don't". I have no idea if you are or not. Great if you are but please note the following:

"Users who are directly involved in the creation or maintenance of any Alternate Reality Game (whether in the role of Puppetmaster or in a Behind-The-Scenes position) are welcome to post as themselves in appropriate context, but not within a forum thread or section in which their game is being discussed."

In bold is what might pertain to you. So either you are an insider, thus breaking the ToS every time you elude about information in your posts, or you are NOT an insider which then takes two paths.

If you are not an insider then you are either a) a gamejacker or b) refusing to listen for some weird reason to everyone here that is pointing out to you that a certain blog is not in game.

If you are a gamejacker the motive is clear: malice. But since I always believe for the best in people let's go with option two:

Why disregard everyone here? Why keep insisting that nonsensical posts are IG? Why keep throwing hints around that somehow you might know something we do not? And why keep linking yourself to a website that has drawn the ire of the player base of both ARG's you are following?

In short, why be that guy?

The Terms of Service can be found here. They are simple and I have attempted to showcase how their certain areas apply to you. If you or any other person here has any questions about them please do not hesitate to contact one of your friendly Moderators.

Thank you.

Thank you.

There are six computers attached to one network. We share the same IP.

While it should be behind us, I do want to point out I have no idea what is involved with this project (and its creators). I also want to continue to play this particular ARG, but it will continue to look as if I have some kind of "inside information" - which is untrue. The same thing happened to me during the Cloverfield ARG. I'm sorry if this seems to go on and on and on ... but I'm quite pissed about the whole situation. I am not "that type of guy" ... really.

So here is my seemingly random coincidence. (With references Wink )

On 05-Feb-1977 (the date given to us on the PDP-11 simulator) President Jimmy Carter met with one Admiral Hyman G. Rickover.
http://www.jimmycarterlibrary.org/documents/diary/1977/d020577t.pdf (See the 12:57 entry)

Admiral Rickover was known as the "Father of the Nuclear Navy" and a part of the Atomic Energy Commission which later became Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyman_G._Rickover

The reason I bring this up is because we have part of JFKs Partial Test Ban Treaty speech, which prohibited atomic testing. And Rickover played a big role in the area of atomic energy and naval reactor programs. (For ships/submarines that carried nuclear weapons.) and just happened to meet with the sitting president on 05-Feb-1977.

I doubt it means anything to the ARG, but I found the connections interesting enough to share.

Note: The ERDA not only managed the naval reactor programs, but the nuclear weapons programs as well. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Energy_Research_and_Development_Administration
