You got your treasure in my infrastructure
cache causes bomb scare

from the Lake County Record-Bee newspaper which covers Mendocino and Ukiah in Northern California
Quote:
Bomb scare
05/18/2010

LAKE COUNTY -- On Tuesday afternoon CalTrans employees making repairs to a road sign just north of Lower Lake spotted what appeared to be a pipe bomb in the ground near the post that held the sign. California Highway Patrol, Lake County Fire Protection District and Lake County Sheriff's Office were called to the scene. Highway 29 between Lower Lake and Siegler Canyon Road was closed for approximately three hours while the Napa Bomb Squad determined the device was not an explosive, but a part of a worldwide treasure hunting game.

I have not yet found out which game this might have been from, but my guess is that it was simply a geocache.

Ok, so whenever I decide to put a geocache somewhere, I'll make it pipebomb-looking and I'll add some wires and a clock just for kicks...

*sigh*

Thanks for sharing the info, from what I've heard, mistaking geocaches for bombs and explosive devices is nothing new.

...It causes me no end of enjoyment to read links like these, neurotypicals are so stupid sometimes. (No offense meant to any NT's reading this, you guys play ARGs, so you're SMART Razz)

I know that law enforcement agencies are being informed of geocaching - around here they have been at least... I wouldn't be surprised if they have access to first check on bomb scares to see if there's any geocache at the reported location, then respond accordingly.
Which is another reason why Groundspeak has and strongly recommends geocache ettiquette and placement guidelines, specifically to avoid situations like that Confused Unfortunately, there's always someone...

A couple of years back, one of the Northern California law enforcement agencies blew-up a geocache knowing with almost absolute certainty that it was, in fact, a geocache. (They'd checked it out on a previous call.)

Sometimes... Ya just gotta blow stuff up.

I'd be surprised to find out that checking geocaching.com, letterboxing.info, etc. isn't on their to-do list when responding to a possible bomb.
