Jan andn J^2

Over in EvenMoreNewAxons someone says, "It's also been made fairly clear that she isn't his real daughter." I'm still reading that page, and likely need to re-read some older Axon pages again, but what information that's been given given any indication that J^2 isn't her real father?[/url]

See, now that's what I call a good question.

It's almost entirely SPEC, actually. As near as I can tell, much of the SPEC is based on OOG knowledge of the various Spartan programs. You'd need an answer from a real Halo-novel expert -- which I am decidedly not -- to give you more details on that.

As far as I know, there is exactly one (count it, one) in-game reference that suggests that JJ might not be Jan's real father, and it's from one of the axon clips from the first round, hey_dad. When JJ shows up at Jan's interrogation, she says "Hey, dad." And the PQI gives a warning beep, similar to what it gives for a false answer. The "stupid cop" says to himself: "Hmm, there's a spike on the baseline." From this we SPECulate that something is odd about the relationship between JJ and Jan, and that he is not exactly her real father.

Oh-ho! I remember that line, but had never made the connection. Thank you. Thank you.

caveat

Just bear in mind that it is a spec, since there is also mucho evidence that Jan is not a spartan (or at the very least, not a spartan-2).

Even with the PQI...modern lie-detectors measure blood pressure and body temperature for changes (assuming that lies change these variables). A spike on the PQI could just be the nervousness of dad showing up at a police station while she is in custody.

Always remember, well-rounded spec is the best kind of spec.

Another thing to not forget in terms of that quotation and baselines, etc...

Jan can beat the PQI! She is expecting retribution from her father. Therefore it wold not catch her off guard to see him walking in the police station. So I'm thinking that if anything, the reason that the baseline is remarkable is that maybe the "false" beep we hear is what clues in "stupid cop" to Jan's ability to fake responses. (He knows she's going to be scared of his entry, yet we get a false, as if he's not the father? This says Jan's not responding as normal. It's a "tell".)

anyway, that's as much spec as anything else, but the fact remains that Jan can manipulate the PQI readings, and therefore we prolly shouldn't be basing much spec on any of Jan James PQI readings, IMHO.

PQI: from thebruce.ca wrote:

Interrogator: Janissary? Interesting. You gonna be in trouble for this Jan?
Jan: Yeah
Interrogator: Mom?
Jan: Dad.
(warning beep)
Interrogator: Ya... That's a nice baseline. How old are you Jan?

yes_or_no: from thebruce.ca wrote:

Interrogator: Are you too smart to get caught by a stupid cop?
Jan: Wh-what?
(warning beep)
Interrogator: [whispers] A little skew from baseline. Not too much, not probable cause. There's people out there who know how to beat the quiz, did you know that?
Jan: Yeah
(positive beep)

hey_dad: from thebruce.ca wrote:

Officer: It's the father.
Interrogator: Come in.
Jan: Hey dad.
(warning beep)
Interrogator: Hm. There's a spike on the baseline...

[SPEC]
It seems like the baseline establishes her emotional threshold, which she controls. The first excursion sets the max point (controlled).
Whenever she is caught off guard, sho goes off the charts (because she loses control of her emotions at that time)
The second excursion is minimal, because she catches it fast enough to compensate.
The third excursion, when her dad walks in, is off the chart because she loses control entirely, blowing the baseline.

It does not mean JJ is not her dad, but it does give the cop the notion that she was controlling the PQI the whole time (probable cause).

But again, the PQI results are NOT TYPICAL, so therefore, we cannot gauge what was seen and what was not (even when "stupid cop" says things, we also know he is lying about what he knows of the situation) so the point remains, we should not be, (again, in my opinion) building spec from such shaky ground as "the PQI said this, and 'stupid cop' said this."

I just think that kind of reverse-engineering of facts to prove speculation is not founded as (1) necessary in the first place (2) useful or correct in previous use. Therefore, in my mind, it's too unstable to continue with.

AGAIN, I fully respect the spec, and say it's always possible that it is the direction the plot is going, but we have no real foundation for it yet, other than interpretation of spec that leads to more spec...

This has gone beyond the question into spec and discussion, which is good, but not here. Very Happy

Locking.
