Sorry for posting as a "guest" but I'm at work and only have a second to reply...

here's another theory, what if the sounds produced were written in an audio programming language... for example, a predecessor to CSound? I'm currently researching to find one (if any) that was in-development or in-use during the appropriate time period.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audio_programming_language

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Csound

If we could reverse engineer the notes into the code that would produce them we may gather some insight from the results.

In summary:

What we know:

Musical sequence==First 8 digits of golden ratio (can't believe that wasn't spotted sooner, with the eye of retrospect it is so obvious; kudos to those who first mooted that(SeekerX & others))

That is 16180339.

Musically we're now fixed with:

C# = 554.365 Hz (277.183 Hz)
F# = 739.989 Hz (369.994 Hz)
C# = 554.365 Hz (277.183 Hz)
G# = 830.609 Hz (415.305 Hz)
C = 523.251 Hz (261.626 Hz)
D# = 622.254 Hz (311.127 Hz)
D# = 622.254 Hz (311.127 Hz)
A# = 932.328 Hz (466.164 Hz)

Brackets=base pitch (wiki pitch helix if unfamiliar)

Clues we still have:

File name: Expcnv.dat

Any relation to "super-8"; hey well there are 8 notes, first 8 fibonacci numbers are 1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21.

Relation to previous ideas: To make a square matrix the next 2 numbers in the sequence are needed. That would be 8,8 which converts to G#,G#. However, cool as that idea is I suspect it's a non-goer.

Unexplained Super-8 images in preview (previous obsession)

The signpost.....

PDP-11: Been back, tried various golden permutations, no joy Rolling Eyes

So the question.... (as previously posed)... What to do with this concrete fact (mmmmmm concrete.......)

http://www.vintagecomputer.net/images/note-frequency-table.jpg I'm sure it covers the right period of computer. [/google]

Golden ratio

Listen to the audio..

If it's not I'll eat my... <insert>..

... Agreed the computer table is cool and useful, but comparing it you get exactly the same info as the peak spectrum analysis on sonic analyser- I gues the former being the great great great grand-daddy of the latter, again cool Laughing

Nice find.

If you go to http://www.research.att.com/~njas/sequences/table?a=1622&fmt=6 you can tweak to what you want. I trimmed it down to only the first 8 digits of phi (golden ratio) converted to tones, slowed it to 1 second tones with a 1 second offset between tones. I chose Bright Acoustic Piano. I'd say it's a pretty close match. The octave seems a little low but we definitely have the right pattern.

ETA damn the WSOD. Had to edit to add the attachment.

ETA: I wanted to overlay the midi sequence with expcnv.mp3 but Audacity does not like midi files. Someone want to do some conversion? I don't have the means to do it from this computer.

The Golden Ratio is an amazing "find."

It's funny that it came up as my Sunflowers have started blooming this week!

Sorry if my phrase used seems like a punch in the face, I was in a real hurry, already overdue to leave for work. Found it by accident. I actually wanted to try the possibilty if the numerical sequence might be an ISBN number. Well, took me some time to figure out how they work and then tried "my german" google for 1-618 just to see what it would come up with. It came up with the german Wiki-article about the Golden Ratio. I don't know yet what to do with it either, though.
Could anyone from another country use "his google" for 1-618 ? I would just like to know if finding clues/connections by google is globally equally easy/hard or if it differs? Well, probably some of you more sophisticated ARG players already know. Anyway, thanks in advance.

1-618 for me (United States) did not find any resluts for golden ration until page 4. Only then did it find a reference by truncating the hyphen in the search criteria. I mostly got a lot of phone numbers beginning with US area code 618.

618 is the area code for south western Illinois...I can confirm it because that's my area code. Smile

Done - FYI (if you have a mac). Import to garage band, export to i-tunes, convert to mp3.

Could there be anything in the choice of pitch, or have we drained this?

AI?

Hmm, had some hours to investigate into the Golden Ratio-Wiki and personally I would go with the Roger Penrose-link being the most "connected" issue to this game. You can find him in the "timeline". He is a mathematical genius (from my point of view Smile ) involved in the relativity theorie (which is always "cool") and he was actively publishing some interesting lightspeed related stuff during the year 1979. I tend to bind space-travel with lightspeed, so yeah, well... Smile.
But I found it most intruiging that he is such a firm opponent to the possibility of artificial intelligence, in the Wiki under "Physics and consciousness".
Could that be a connection? Between the sound file and an AI?
(Yes, I do have a theory here but it is so odd, I let others make the first step Smile .)

Actually I meant overlay the midi 2 sound files I am attaching to this post. I have a mac but never bothered installing iTunes on it. I'm currently on a PC, though. With the right plugin, you can convert files to mp3 with Audacity but it doesn't help if you can't open midi with Audactiy.
