there needs to be another wall [OT]

where people can't reference the slender man in blogs and stuff, because it goes like this

PM "been seeing creepy guy"

player "OMG RUN SLENDER MAN"

PM "I googled slender man, it's him, blah blah"

and it's not fun. The idea that we know all about him and as soon as he's referenced we can inform the PM just annoys me

anyone agree?

I think that that's the PM's responsibility, rather than the players'. Because this happens so often it's up to the PM to decide where to take it once the inevitable SM reference is dropped. There are a few ways that I'm sure that they could deal with it. They could dismiss it outright, compare and contrast with what they're actually seeing, realize that it's similar to Slendy but not the same, shun the believers, agree that it's SM outright, etc.

Alternatively, it's impossible for players to regulate one another, but you can ask. When a new blog pops up, you can post it here and ask others not to drop hints immediately. And you can regulate your own play and attempt to avoid Slender-references immediately.

i'm reading through seeking truth atm, and people wont shut up about it in the comments. The guy's a detective, so he's saying he can't go off on one x-files style, but because they KNOW it's a slender man ARG they wont stop going on about keeping an open mind about it. It's like, take the hint, let the ARG develop before we bring the climax forward on page 1, and we're just waiting for the symptoms to appear.

You know, I'd take you more seriously if you at least used a name, Guest.

In any case, it's a PM problem. Slender ARGs have to become smarter; they have to give their "herald" a reason to disbelieve the idea that it's the man of mystery. You really can't just have "oh it's slendy kay i just gonna go mad and die now mmkay" because that's where most of them head. Examples of the idea of "getting smarter": Seeking Truth, EverymanHYBRID. The characters in both refute the idea that Slendy could be real.

What's wrong with Guest posting that makes you not take them seriously, Sera?

Ah-ha, I can never tell Guests apart, unless they have rather different "tones" of writing, as it were.

Back onto the topic at hand - one would think that Mr. Thin would wise up to the fact that people were spotting him easier now, no? Perhaps he would try to hide himself, like hiding in the shadows behind a person who has a face, before someone looks behind them...

I agree, it does get slightly repetitive. I liked the idea of it in JAF, when Dav (I think it was Dav) pointed him out to Logan. Now, though, more and more people are using it, and it's getting really boring, really fast.

This is directed more at anyone aspiring to write a Slender blog and happens to come across this page: Variety is the spice of life, guys, don't be afraid to try something new. I'm not saying have the characters completely fall for the Slender Man schtick or completely reject it; mix-and-match. Come up with something. Get a buddy and run ideas by them. There are a million things that HAVEN'T been done yet in terms of Slender blogging. Use your creativity to create something unique.

Seconded so much. Even if you don't have a buddy who you can run things by, the members of this forum can help: to toot my own horn, my PM box is always open if you need someone to proof-read some ideas (although you'd have to be desperate to consider me, ah-ha). Sometimes, the members of this forum don't like "immersion breaking." That's fine! Just find someone who doesn't mind, and discuss it with them.

When you plot things out (and you really should, even just in draft), you should consider everything: "can I photoshop this thing that I need to"? "Has this been done"? It doesn't matter if it's been done if you're good enough at writing, but it's better to illuminate the world with good ideas, eh?

It always annoys me when I see comments on a blog/video that completely break the fourth wall. Dav on JAF is an example of what players should be doing. Many don't. Crying or Very sad

If I were the PM of an ARG with comments like that, I would either disable them entirely (a la Marble Hornets) or make them have to be admin-approved. Then I could just refuse to approve whatever I want. I'd also be able to keep shitty gamejacks out. Razz

I'd like to see somebody do a blog where MarbleHornets doesn't exist, in universe, so people can't just say "Go watch this and it'll show you what's happening to you lol".

Ah-ha, I agree. Maybe something like "I can't find these videos, give me a link?" and then "that link doesn't work, man =/". Or maybe someone who can't access YouTube due to censors and so on.

[Incidentally, you are the same Dark Fiddler as The Dark Fiddler from the Order of the Stick forums, right?]

Perhaps... maybe... it's possible.... (yes).

I'm surprised anybody would recognize me. xD

On another note, look at this quote from Dray in the Seeking Truth thread:

Then again, every SlenderBlog is different. I'm surprised that someone hasn't suggested that it was the common cold that did him in in the end, yet. 9_9

EverymanHYBRID has some comedic elements to it...but you're right...a straight satire would be golden.

As far as the topic itself...one problem I think PM's run into is which mythos to pull from. There are the elements introduced on the SA forums...there are the MH videos and countless blogs to pull from.

My advice to any potential PM's would be to create your own SM mythos...have a simple, but in-depth back story to pull from, and reveal things little by little. Another tip would be to absolutely find a way to regulate comments the way MH has done. I know a lot of users cry foul at that stuff...but I think it can muddy the waters when commenters can post whatever they want.

I would think of it like vampires. Bram Stoker's Dracula created a template that others have followed...adding their own twists and quirks to make it their spin on things.

Although if we start seeing glittery Twilight Slendys fighting shirtless six-pack abbed Maskys than I'm done.

Excuse me if im wrong, but aint the point of an ARG is having no fourth wall?

And its all fine and dandy for a guest to come in and try to regulate how players respond, its kinda hard when a dude goes "o shit a tall faceless man and a pages of (X)!!!!!" to suggest slenderman.

Maybe poor phrasing on my part. I'm thinking of a fourth wall between the ARG and the fact that it's an ARG. Specifically, comments that say things like "Oh, is this another Slender Man ARG?" or when someone tries to gamejack and everyone starts insulting them for gamejacking (thus disrupting the whole "reality" part, in my eyes).
