Why?
"With time being a premium, why do you invest yours in ARGs?"

Hi. It's been a hell of a long time since i've been very active posting here (which isn't to say I don't keep an eye on things) & I figured I'd dive right back in by trowingthis thread up.

So here I am, sweating my proverbial (and non-proverbial) balls off on the hottest day of the year so far in Sonoma County, and I'm waxing philosophical about Args & CF & whatever else you want to call it, and what exactly I enjoy about them -- and at the same time I'm wondering what it is that makes me want to build them as well, and I start thinking about this question I always ask people in interviews in order to see where their head is at re: video games. It's a really simple question:

Why? With time being at such a premium in today's society, why do you invest yours in games? (specifically args). This question applies to players and puppetmasters alike: why do you do it? What's the endgame here people?

For me, the answer is the same from both standpoints: I want to be a part of the next truly great story -- whether that's by building it or participating in it. I'm hooked on finding a narrative that really moves people & that people feel like they're a part of. I don't particularly care what medium we use to te it, as long as it matters to *someone*.

Ps: obviously I would prefer to also get filthy, stinking rich at it as well.

What about you guys?

...What about you guys?

It was said once by another person in a different group I belonged to but I guess the same applies here:
Quote:
I find that I like the people in this group and would associate with them even outside of the group, and it weeds out the people I wouldn't normally like to associate with.

I like the camaraderie, the fact that the players are generally on the same side of the game and willing to work together (generally speaking), are fun to just hang around with, yet come from a variety of backgrounds.

I like storytelling, using my imagination, sharing a vision. That's for both as a player and a PM. There is a satisfaction that comes from completing something with others that I don't really get from normal "work." It's fun to react to new developments and fun to watch the players react to sudden twists in the story.

ego

can I be personally, brutally honest? I like pitting my wits against other people - I enjoy the brief feeling of control that, with all the bad in the world, I am reminded I don't have. In my realities I can make the goodies win or lose as I see it - I can make people think which, as a teacher, I love doing - make people question the world around them and I've loved puzzles since I was knee high to a grasshopper...
