Fran graves has an interesting spec at wishchasers that these signs may be like those used by hobos to mark places as either friendly or not and other such things. She no longer has the reference material that gives the symbols for comparrison, maybe we should look it up?

while i don't want to say an absolute no to the hobo signs spec, but it doesn't look like any hobo sign I've ever seen. I did quite a bit of research on them for another game and don't recall anything similar.

here are a couple links with signs and their meanings:
http://www.slackaction.com/signroll.htm
http://www.angelfire.com/folk/famoustramp/signs.html
http://www.musespace.com/notes/alternative/hobosigns.html

Now one thing that it could be is something similar to hobo signs. Hobo signs were used to tell other hobos what they were up against (dogs, police, homeowners with guns, etc). There could be a sign just outside of a town that would let them know to turn back as the police would be on your case. Another use would be to put a sign near a farm saying that if you did a bit of work, you'd get free room and board or that they wouldn't care if you crashed in their barn for a night. It was a means of communication that they would understand but that locals wouldn't. There are modern variations popping up, both high and low tech (gang tags vs. informing computer users of wireless accessibility).

So, while I don't think it's a hobo sign, it could very well be a variation of it. Something for people of different dimensions (if that spec is correct), perhaps.

The circles

I think the graffiti could be a symbol of something approaching (a certain time when either a ritual is to happen, or maybe when the stars, or whatever are in the right alignment) and a signal of how close it is. People have pointed out the similarity between the graffiti and the stone circle in the promo, except that a few circles are missing. Perhaps that means that we are that far away from something happening, and when the missing circles are filled in, that is when it will be time.

Walam Olum

i've been trying to research the grafitti symbol... the EOTW newsletter includes a blurb on the Lake of Tears which makes reference to the Lenape indians.

apparently, there was a hoax perpetrated regarding a sacred text called the Walam Olum which is a sort of "painted history" of the Lenape that contains many hieroglyphs which are often quite evocative of the grafitti.

http://www.sacred-texts.com/nam/walam/walam.htm has some examples, and many more can be found with a google search.

the Walam Olum is supposedly fake, but like all hoaxes, there remain many who still believe it's real. in any case, it's so rich in glyphs that it might prove useful, so i figured i'd mention it.

Well ... I've been trying to source some info on the graffiti symbols for some time. Been googling:Symbols/Circles/Dots/Orbs/Ancient/Mytholgy/
Esoteria/Mystical/Stones/Runes/Glyphs...etc etc.

Not really having alot of luck, but here are two pieces of info that (although I don't believe either really applies) may take someone in a new direction.

The first one has to do with the Tetraktys...I don't understand it at all, although the site I got it from does mention H. P. Blavatsky. I also found interesting the 3/7 split....weren't the dots on the circle split the same?

1.Thus the circle in motion, generating a regular decagon, may be taken as a most graphic symbol of the formation of the ten planes of consciousness within the Universe.

The principles underlying these numbers appear in other forms.

Perhaps of paramount importance is that of the Tetraktys. This was the symbol probably most revered by the Pythagoreans. An oath taken on the Holy Tetraktys was held to be binding for life. This single triangle of ten dots stood for them as a symbol of creation.

It may appear sometimes in other forms.
(Circular perhaps?)

The triangular representation of the Tetraktys is an exceedingly important one and exhibits a very curious property. It shows quite graphically what we mean when we speak of the seven manifested planes and the three unmanifested. The three dots which are the vertices of the triangle stand apart, and only the seven dots at the center of the figure will be used in a large number of the diagrams which are to follow.

2. The other thing I was thinking was the way our Universe was once viewed. The circle is the symbol for the Sun very often, and the 10 dots may represent the "10 planets"....which were our nine and the moon....I think. Please correct me if I'm wrong on this point.

Unless it's a reference to that stuff about an unknown tenth planet. Whether that be Vulcan (no, not the Star Trek one) or Niburu.

Hmm.. That could still work, even if both are true. There's debate about whether or not we should consider Pluto a planet anyway. So if Vulcan was in the spot which is now the asteroid belt seperating the inner and the outer planets, and Niburu indeed has that weird orbit, which makes it get close to the Sun every 10K+ years. Then we'd still have our 10 planets, due to Pluto's reclassification as an asteroid.

By golly who knows what I meant...lol

I think I was thinking of the circle as the sun (as it often represents in ancient symbolism) and the 9 dots as the nine planets we know today ...with the tenth being the moon.
