LOL! You're right cjr22. As stated in the link you provided, "These words are sometimes confused with each other", well in my case 'sometimes' was 'today'! Very Happy

LIX

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
After all discretion is the better part of valour (or valor) which should serve anyone --wife or not --well. Discreet is correct! Excellent job Trillian!! And a definite assist there to cjr22! I was thinking it might have something to do with unraveling weaving, but didn't get very far.

And next - 59 already!

LIX

From tennis courts my first ascends ;
My second in commotion ends.
No martyr's crown my whole secured,
Who worse than martyrdom endured ;
They found who tore his limbs apart
A lady's image at his heart.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Lobs ascend from tennis courts and a stir can cause a commotion.
Martyrdom indeed: thrown alive into boiling water and torn apart to get its medallion, poor lobster. Sad

LX
The widowe'rs wooing

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Lobster is correct! Great job Trillian!!! I don't think I would ever have solved that one. Many summers ago I got lobsters to have at the beach ;and my son started crying when he realized we were going to boil them. I haven't cooked one since then.

This next one is the only one with a title we've had so far. I find this title appealing because, as driz, cath, and others will remember, one of the first puzzles on ilovebees, was a story we pieced together from fragments hidden in images, which rob magus named "The Widow's Journey." Rowan has a link to it on her site, but she calls it the Widow's Story. I never learned the "official" name 42 had for it. Here's a link to the finished story for anyone interested.

And onwards:

LX

THE WIDOWER'S WOOING

I HASTENED to my lady's side,
  For Cupid through her lashes beckoned ;
I longed to clasp her as my bride ;
   I asked her : Would she be my second ?

She frowned, but when I heaved a sigh,
   Her frown relaxed, her lips she pursed ;
We kissed, though she protested I
   Behaved unseemly to my first.

We sat together and I sought
   To show how soul communes with soul ;
But she was teacher, I was taught.
   And found in her my perfect whole.

I've got nothing for possible answers on this one. But that is what makes it fun!

Hmm, could work with the teaching theme in the last verse - better than my only thought so far I think...
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Similarly, my best effort was soulmate but it didn't seem quite right for a number of reasons - "soul" doesn't really work as my first and is also mentioned twice in the last verse.

Pretty sure that doesn't need a spoiler but I've been wrong before!

ideas

x / y

y, i think is some sort of female pronoun/referral - she, girl, lady etc
x is an opposite to some sort of kiss or embrace and 'may' contain the letter 'x'?

together:
some double meaning with a teacher/ref to education of some type and a perfect bride?

thinking second might be 'her' as in instruct/her??

Care to explain why? I'm not arguing - I just can't see the reasoning! Confused

I think the key clue has to be in the title. Why is it important to know that the speaker is a widower? My thoughts:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I'm looking at the second as being "I asked her : Would she be" my MATE
and thinking the first is where the widow comes in somehow,
" I Behaved unseemly to (my dead WIFE)" by kissing this other woman.

I'm not sure how the teacher/pupil relationship comes into play, nor what words might fit for the answer...
WIFEMATE, HELPMATE, etc.

Congratulations, rose, on reaching +4K posts! There are many fond memories among them.

As for the uniqueness of this riddle; perhaps having a title is not the only difference. I've also noticed that the ordinal words "second" and "first" fit well, as is, into the context of the widower's wooing.
"I asked her : Would she be my second wife?"
"Behaved unseemly to my first wife."

Perhaps we don't use them at all, and solve this one differently, too?
Here's my fun, but probably wrong guess..
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Maybe he's highlighting the sequent and using word play for my perfect equal. What might describe a second wife?
And found in her my perfect sequel Smile

Thanks driz! I said when I found this home on the web that I was never leaving, but I never imagined that would mean more than 4000 posts!

in more important news:

I checked all the answers and none are correct. Back to the drawing board! Thinking caps on! I think I don't have to spoiler this comment it is obvious no one has the right answer if I don't post the next charade.

Hmmm. I'm assuming this silence means people are stuck. Anyone need or want a hint of some kind? I think this one might refer to an old-fashioned word or something we aren't thinking of in the same way they did back in 1895. I'm not sure why it is so hard.

Another option: We could pass this one and go on to the next while thinking about XL.

Actually, I probably won't be on the forums here after tonight until July 5th or 6th.

So take time to think what works best.

i might as well toss in one more guess:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
SOULMATE
although i'm not sure how/why someone would have "Behaved unseemly" to the first part of that.
