i agree for sure, theres no way the coelecanth is what he really after. one of the first thing he tells us is htat he just wants to help it survive (if they die within a day when caught its a moot point.) because it "seems weird to live in a world without them"

i dunno about you but that seems like a weird thing to say, let alone about a fish that you've never seen before.

Azure wolf;

You're right, was missing an "i" and a "c."

Apparently my ctrl-c didn't capture the entire phrase:

The calendar
If it's a crypto ...

Was looking at the moon 'phases' at
http://www.hooklineandminker.com/images/calendar.gif

They clearly do not match up to a 'real' moon phases calendar:
ttp://www.moonconnection.com/moon-june-2010.phtml

So was looking at it like a crypto -

2 phases the same, then 3, 4, 2, 1 (new moon), 2, 3, 3 4, 3 then 3 the same as the first 2.

Which could be written like:
AABBBCCCCDDEFFGGGHHHIIIIJJJAAA or
23421233433 or
2a 3b 4c 2d 1e 2f 3g 3h 4i 3j 3a

Don't know what it means, just thinking out loud - maybe trigger someone else ...

The site http://www.dinofish.com/ ( mentioned before)
Opens with the title "A Fish Out of Time" ref Coelacanth --

Time, compass, calendars .... ?

Yes it does. When you look at the second calendar the photos are a non clipart picture of the moon so is more true to the moon phases. But it does match.

BTW: Black = No Moon not Full moon.

Ok so after looking at the calendar my first thought was that the rare fish would be seen in the gallery (the "photo slider") during the listed times. With that in mind I took apart the flash file, http://www.hooklineandminker.com/gallery.swf

And turns out it contains a link to, http://www.hooklineandminker.com/config.xml?nocache=xxxxxxxxx (the x's are replaced by random numbers by the flash programming, and yes it produces an error if you go there it's meant to be read by the flash not your browser, however click view source and you can see the whole file) This file is really a listing of all the photos in the gallery and their description plus source.

The really interesting thing is that the link contains a "nocache". This is used to prevent caching of web sites so that they will always be redownloaded. (if you don't know what caching is check here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_cache ) The reason you would do this is so that you can update the file on the fly and you know that your viewers will always see the new file.

This may seem familiar to some as it is extremely similar to the way they prevented caching of the countdown mechanism on STIES. (However this is also simply a relatively common way of preventing caching)

I don't have any experience with galleries myself, but i don't think this is very typical way to do it.

Here are all the links in the normal xml file. Notice all the pics are actually hosted on the hlm site.

SNAKEHEAD FISH
RED LION FISH
ANGLER FISH
FANGTOOTH FISH
COFFINFISH
FROGFISH
TOADFISH
VIPERFISH
BOBBIT WORM
GIANT STURGEON
OAR FISH
LAMPREY
PORTUGUESE MAN-OF-WAR
WOLFFISH
STONEFISH
CROWN-OF-THORNS STARFISH
BARRELEYE FISH

Looks like my theory is incorrect or incomplete as I expected it to change now, based on the calendar being in PST. Oh well.

Keep in mind today is the last day of June. I would expect for us to get a new calendar tomorrow, or else Josh is letting us down for rare fish spotting.

Maybe we'll get a text update then as well.

I wrote new moon, not "full moon" --- new moon is black -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_moon

You are probably correct on the rest - but I did NOT say full moon - New moon.

However, I still put forth the possibility that it may be a coded message as opposed to being about an actual moon phase calendar.

My bad I did miss read it.

But the dates on both maps do match to the phases. So they are the same.

Best Time to Spot

OK - checked out quite a few fishing sites that relate moon phases and best times to fish and none of the times in their charts match up with the HLM calendar times. So I agree with emato, the calendar may be a cypher / crpto of sorts.

I still think the best time to spot a rare fish will be July 8 at 5:36 AM or PM

Ok first of all it doesn't say best time to catch a fish but best time to spot a fish.

The calendar, at least the moon phases, cannot be a crypto. The times could be, but I think it's more likely they're just times which we haven't yet figured out the meaning to.

Yeah, that calendar for spotting a rare fish is just odd. It must be a clue for looking at something during the indicated time and dates. What else could be considered a "rare fish"? Is Josh the rare fish? Are we to look at his pictures at that time? Hey, has anyone mentioned that they could be times and dates for us to view the PDP-11? Looks like we will need to wait and see if we get a new calendar for July in order to test it out.

in the Coeacanth blog, he refers to an alias "Mr Cartwright".

a quick google shows a few connections between Mr Cartwright and UFOs.
I'm not saying it's the same person, just that it may be a name of some interest, meaning there may be a reason he chose that alias....

ah!
according to this site:
http://pagesperso-orange.fr/CRYPTOZOO/coel_eng.htm

a Mr Geoffrey Cartwright, claimed to have seen a coelacanth in November 1952 in shallow water, while diving off Malindi (northern Kenya) but was not generally believed, as he didn't have proof!
It in some way explains the choice of name, but still leaves questions.....

Mr Cartwright and Mr Wilson

and Colonel Robert Wilson was credited for claims of sighting and photographing the Loch Ness monster.

so we have references for the names Cartwright and Wilson,
