Also, all the front of the postcards indicate "No playing at your local Arcade"
Another Flynns at CC2010?

Dang! Missed all this kicking off! Suddenly looking forward to checking my post this week.

EDIT - @AgentLex - anything I can do to help get any potential postcards to you and your new address?

Too funny, booba!

I loved how Gomez pulled LIT cigars out of his pocket, too.

I have a binary interpretation spreadsheet that has around 100 encodings on its "5-bit" sheet, including all of the ones from that last link, so, I think we're covered, there. It has the few 6-bit encodings I'm aware of as well on another sheet. But, honestly, I don't believe the puzzle uses either one of these methods. PS: If anyone's truly aware of any 5-bit "gray codes", I'd be interested in seeing them.

Ok, so I crossreferenced my image with Bruce's, and I found quite a few scaling issues. So I went through and individually matched the image thru scaling a bit better. The PSD and XCF I linked to on page 4 are now updated, including the original images as layers so people can investigate the overlay.

Anyway, here's my corrected image:

Astro Gunner still has overlapping pixels with 2 of the others, but the other 3 no longer overlap at all. So I might be closer.

I'm also beginning to suspect that the image has 105 columns total.

Punched cards, paper tape, magnetic tape?
Dead programming media

What size are the postcards, has anyone measured them? I think card stock, I think old punch cards.

Two things spring to mind when I saw those - old computer punch cards, which followed a similar format way, way, way back when and morse code, notice there are dots and dashes.

I was thinking punched cards as well, maybe IBM 80 format?

The only other thing that comes to mind when I look at these images is old magnetic cassette tape, the kind I'd load programs from into an old Radio Shack computer from the 80's with.

Are we sure these are pixels?

~sigh~ Dead end there. They're not seven pixels wide. Drat.

The most consecutive lines with pixels appears to be four at the end.

Let's not assume they are pixels. Smile

I think it's interesting that there are four in a row though. Are they a repeated pattern on each of the cards we know of so far? I wonder if there's a way to figure out if there's a sequence to these strips on the cards. My guess would be chronological by release date of the games, if they are known. Anyone have any other guesses?

I think something's still off... I agree with Bruce that the characters are 6x6 (with a 7th blank column). These still aren't quite lining up.
I like your formatting better, much easier to play around with than the overlay.

EDIT: Maybe try lining it up as though the first word is ENCOM. It really does look like that's a strong possibility in the overlay Bruce did.

That would be pretty sweet. If it does happen, I hope y'all will take plenty of pictures, tweet, and blog about it!

As for me, my local arcade is Ground Kontrol. I think I'll be hitting it up in the next day or two with a roll of quarters to go play some Tetris.

Oh, I have no doubt. If you can, download the PSD and look at how I've overlayed the pixels. They drift quite a bit, and even with doing the best scaling I can manage, there are quite a few that wind up in between. That's probably why it goes from a bit like a shape into more noise as you move right.

But I also agree that it's easier to play with that way than looking at the weird blobs when you just try and resize/superimpose the images we have. They're all photos taken at different angles and at different distances from the camera. It's a royal pain, that's for sure.

Ooh, Braille is a good guess. Has anyone tried translating what we have so far?

Tried it. Can make anything out of the blank space. Nice idea, though.
